FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Satvupay, Sep ember i1 P.M. ‘The stock market was pretty weil sustained to day, and in some stocks a trifling advance was realized. The feature of the stock movement of this and the past day or two has beea free purchasing stock by the bears, who apprehended that a rive would foliow any adjustment of the Erie arid Central dispute at Philadelphia. It is presumed that since Wednesday five thousand shares of Central, Erie, and Rock island have been bonght by the bears to cover their ontstanding contracts. Judging from this morning's movement, the caution of the Lears was laadable bat annecewsary. It was known early in the morning that a basis of adjostment had been carried out by the rallroad presidents at Philadelphia; but neither Erie nor Con tral felt the effect of might have been expected. at 704, at which price over a thonsand shares were taken, doubtless for the bear account then moved upward, without much activity, and af ter the Board, when the news of the settlement was generally known, touched 80. Erie was steady at yesterday's highest price, transactions being limtted. | The Western stocks were sluggish, though there were more transactions than ual in Rock Islead ‘This latter stock did not move much from yesterday's | price. Toledo, after rising | above closing price yesterday, feil back to that figure; Michigan Sonth erm, common and preferred, were steady and looking promising; Mlinois Central—probably on the strength of an order from Purope—was nearly 4 better. Read ing continues to be sustained by the sales of the bears. But for the demand arising from them, the loss of business would nate rally cagse a serious decline in the stock. Pacific Mail, which is also hotly assailed by the bears, hola its own well. Panama is dul!. The only transactions in bank stocks were a sale of Con tinental at and a sale of American Exchange at a shade below yesterday's prices. Miesouris seem to have a declining tendency again, though the busi- ness done was perhaps too small to enabiqone to judge. Illinois bonds have declined ¢; Hodson River 3d mortgage bonds have risen 5 a 4 per cent in the past month or two, and are much sought by capital- ists. A single La Crosse land grant bond sold this morning «ta decline of j The morket closed pretty strong, 4 after the board rather better prices ruled. In accordagce with a vote of the mombers of the Stock Exchange, | aud seemingly to the dissatisfaction of the clder and graver members, there was a0 second bourd this afternoon, There is no change in mouey to report, In some quarters it is reported as ensy as 54; in others bard to getat4, But in reality there appears to be no change; the brokers are using ad much mouey bor- rowed at $ and 34 as at 4 and if. An effort is being made by the banks to tighten the market: it is likely to eucceed. Exchange on Evrope for the North Star closed aa noticed yesterday.
