Our European advices by the City of Washington have ‘been anticipated by the arrival of the Saxonia and ‘the report of the Arabia, telegraphed from St. Johns, N. F., already published in the Henan. We have received a letter from Messrs. G. Merle & Son, in reference to an assertion of counsel in @ re- cemt case in the Supreme Court (Livingston vs. Brennan), to the effect that it was a “privileged usage for porters in bonded warehouses to take what liquor and segars were necessary for their own use ou the premises.” Messrs. Merle & Son emphatical- Jy deny the truth of the assertion. Our correspondent at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, writ" ang on the 20th ult., says:—The market for both sugars and molasses has of late been very quiet, owing principally to want of stock to speculate in, ‘The advices from the United States to 26th ult., received some days since, caused an advance in prices, which now range at 4jc.a 5c. per lb. The produce of the island this year is more than an average yield. Business is dull. The absence 0° American, Freach, English and Spanish steamships | of war causes money to be very scarce. The receipts of cows and calves were moderate- ly heavy, and the supplies were readily disposed of at $20 a $60. There was little change in veal calves, and few brought more than 6}c. Dae Niagara's Last Voyage from Queenstown —Lajing of the Cabie—The Great Epte of 1858. The glorious issue of the last voyage of the steam frigate Niagara from Qneenstown to Trinity Bay is now a familiar thing to nine- tenths of those who speak the English tongue. ‘The fishermen of the Orkneys and the settlers in the ‘distant region of Kansas and Nebraska have been alike inspired with wonder and en- thusiasm at heariug recounted the tidings of the great event; and in a few weeks more the news will have traversed the civilized portions of the globe, and all their inhabitants will have Jearned that the continents of Earope and America are united by the eleciric telegraph. But up to the present time the details of the voyages of the Niagara and Agamemaon have not been made public. We know nothing of them, except that Providence smiled thereon; and that, through the efforts of the gallant and persevering men on board these two national ships, the greatest triumph of modern days was achieved. So far as the Niagara is concerned we supply to-day that void. The history of her last voyage from Queenstown to Trinity Bay, as written by our accomplisbed special correspondent on board, is published in another portion of this day's Hexaio; avd, as well on account of the re- mutkable incidents in which it abounds as of the importance of the result attained, it may woll be regarded as the great epic of 1858, Lb is intensely interesting, and there will be few of our own citizens, at least, who will not pos sees themselves of this narrative, and preserve it in memory of the great event of the age. ‘Takeo in conjunction with the narrative of the voyage of the Agamemnon, which will probs. Uly reach us in the course of a week, it will form one of the most interesting pages of his- tory—the introduction of the epoch of inter- continental telegraphic communication. It is imporsible at this time to foresee the ef- fects which this event fs destined to have upon mankind. Our finite minds cannot entertain more than the narrowest glimpse of those ef- fects, and this even dimly and indefinitely. It will be for future generations to realize the im- portance of the work of these latter days In dhe great facilities which the Atlantic telegraph ‘will give to trade and commerce we will be, of course, participators and beneficiaries; but this will be but one of its minor and less important results, Who can, at the present day, form eaything like a just conception of the influence which this bringing together of the two conti- nents, to unlike in their political and social re- lations, will have on both? Who can tell how soon and to what extent the despotic systems of Europe will be affected by our simple and per- fect form of republican government, or our s0- cial manners and customs improved by a closer contact with the more highly refined people of the Old World? With the Atlantic telegraph in full operation, it may not take so long as we might imagine to undermine and overthrow forever the despotic and aristocratic systems of the Old World, or to introduce « more elevated etandard of artistic and social existence in the New. One thing, however, is pretty certain, and that ie, that euch, to a greater or lesser ex- tent, will be the tendency of the mutual infla- ‘ence of international telegraphic communication Interesting from Utah and the Plains. ” Sr. Lovis, August 18, 1868.
