‘most beautiful variety to everything on which it shone. According as the berrels that were reserved for feeding fuel disappeared, the crowds assembled to witness the Roenes. dispersed, and long after every one had left ‘the tar barrels to flaish their own destru \ion they conti- nved to rival suocesafully every other light which burned to celebrate the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph cable. ‘THE SHIPPING IN THE HARBOR—SALUTES FIRED BY SEVERAL V8SSEL8—THE PRINCE ALBSRT AND PRRSIA-—LIGHTS DISPLAYED—THS PRINCE ALBEST ILLUMINATED, BTC., BTC. Perbaps the most interesting foatureo’ the displays yea- terday was that presented by the vessels in’ tho harbor, By these were represented, in harmony and beauty, the flage of commerce and progress of all the leading ns- tone of the world, besides those of most of the other maritime nations of lesser note, scattered over the globe, ‘a both hemispheres. During the day every ehip im the Port displayed colors of some kind, and most of them ‘were decorated with every bit of buntiog they could send aloft, The number of vessels in the harbor is probably some seven hundred or eight huadred, and when all these dressed themselves out and joined in the general rejoicing, they added no small degree of grandeur and interest to the scene. Along the East river there was not anything ‘very unusual in che dress of any of the decorated ships; but along the North river, where the ecsan slesmers lie, there were many interesting points in the decorations worthy of notice. The Germsn shipz, wherever they lay, were amongst (hose that displayed very many colors. None of them, however, competed in any way wifh the ocean steamers, and especially ihe Persia, Prince Albert and Adriatic. They were aimost buried im colors, of every shade and very voried emblems. There were the flags of the United States, England aad France, Dy ingenious contrivances, entwined in each other, while the fags of almost every commercial nation flaunted proudly from their rigging. The hoisting of the colors Dowever, was tbe only part which the shipping took in the celebration, till after the excitement of the forenoon’s demonstrations in the city had passed away. In the after- noon and eyening, however, salutes were fred from various vessels, while the Persia and Prince Albert seem- ed to vie with each other in asserting the decided supe- riority of the ocean steamers. At five o'clock in the afver- noon, the Persia, having been hauled trom ber dock into ‘the stream, led the way by firing a national salute. Soon afterwards, when the color of the evening permitted) rockets began to ascend one after another {rom her deck. Then the Sexonia, wnich bad just arrived from Europe fiaebed out brilliant Ughts from several parts of her rig- * ging, and thus far joined ip the celebration. The rockets ‘rom the Persia continued to ascend during the whole of tbe evening. About half-pest eight o’clock the Prince Albert commenced her part of the play with spirit. Rockte from her deck first ascended, then came a num- ber of brilliant lights of every imegmabie hae, flashing from every spar of her princely rigging. A national talute was then thundered rapidly from her deck, aud her cuties regarding the cclebration of the great event were creditably discharged, Several other vesre's in ‘various parts of the harbor fired salutes of every nature and appellation, but mone of them commanded as much attention as was directed to tbe Prince Albert and tbe Yersia.
