From Harper’s Cyclopedia of Commeree, re- cently published, we copy a part of the inter esting article which we there find under the general head of ‘ Telegraph.”’ The idea of employment of electricity as a means of conveying intelligence to a distance appears to have been long entertained, and ex- Periments to ascertain the practicability of electrical communication ween distant places were early made by scientific men throughout the civilized world. In 1729,Grey and Wheeler discovered that a current of elec- tricity could be made to flow through consider- able lengths of wi in _ 1746, Winckler at Leipsic, and Le Monnier at Paris, experimented on the same subject of the transmission of the electric current through conducting bodies. In 1747, Dr. Watson, in England, repeated and extended these experiments, sending a current through two miles of wire and two of earth; sending shocks across the Thames and the New River. Dr. Franklin, in 1748, and DeT.uc, in 1749, repeated many of these experiments. In i ing more or less on »ject of electric folegraphy were made by in 1774, Reusser in 1794, Cavallo in tancourt in 1793, Soemmering in 1807, f. Oersted in 1819. first electric telegraph actually applied 3 to have been the invention of aD. F va. Humboldt says bis telegraph was estab- ed between Madrid and Aranjues in 1793— “» -9@ distance of about twenty-six miles. in 1816, Francis Ronalds, of Hammersmith, England, constructed a telegraph of eight miles in length. This telegraph was one of the best that had been invented, and was capable of transmitting intelligence with considerable ra- —. In 1823, he argued the importance of invention for government purposea, writin: . Lord Melville on the subject, but without of ject. In 1827, Harrison G. Dyer, an American, constructed a telegraph on Long Island, using frictional electricity. The line was about two miles in length. Previous to 1809 no mode of electric tele- e@enfined with great difficulty to conducting " rapid and incontinuvns in its action, its small quantity, devoid of ener- ing made a step forward by his ap- alvanism to the purposes of tele- ~ In 1809 he constructed, at Munich, ic apparatus, using 35 wires. This telegraph was exceedingly rapid, being capable of traesmit- fing 1.200 letters per minute. In 1850 about miles of telegraph in England, and 1,500 in = | America, were worked under Bains patents. His plain has gone now almost entirely out of use, other and better instruments superseding it. The property which lightning possesses of re- vising or destroying the poles of the natural magnet, and of impsring magnetism to iron, bad long been known; but not until 1820 was the fact turned to any useful purpose. Profes- sor Oersted, of Copenhagen, discovered. durin; 1819, that if a wire charged with electricity is placed parallel toa magnetic needle, the needie will deviate from its natural position at right angles with the conducting wire; and that this deviation follows aregularlaw. Proceeding on the groundwork of Professor Oersted. many other discoveries were made by Arago, Ampere, Faraday, Davy, Sturgeon, and Professor Henry. and Ampere in France, and Sir H. Davy in Engiand, discovered that a current of electricity would render steel magnetic; and Ampere found that by coiling the wire in the form of a helix round steel the effect was greatly inereased. William Sturgeon, of London, in the year 1825,discovered and construc t:d the electro magnet. The electro magnet is oue of the must valuable parta of the electric telegraph now in use, and has entered more or less into nearly every telegraph invention since its discovery. Oersted’s great discovery gave a new dizec- tion to the science of eleciric telegraphing. Galvanic telegraphs were, in turn, discarded, and magneto-electric telegraphs took their place Auipere was the first to make use of Ocersted’s diseovery in telegraphing. In 1820he invented & telegraph, using {6 magnetic needles. His plan was not practically carried out. Baron de Schilling invented a needle tele- graph in 1532, at St. Petersburg. His instru- ment had five needles, which, by their vibra- tions on the right or left, indieated signals. He afterwards improved his instrament, using bat one needle. In 1537 Dr. Steinheil had a telegraphic in- strument working a distance of 12 miles. His telégraph of one wire, and either one or two magnetic needles, as might be desired, made permanent marks on paper. and also tele- by sound. When writing, his needles were furnished with ink-tubes, and by their motions marks were recorded on paper; when telegraphing by sound, the needles were nade to strike bells of different tones. He used the earth as part of his eireuit. This was very nearly a perfect instrument, and is infinitely superior to the majority of telegraphic instru- ments since invented. June 12, 1837, Messrs. Cooke & Whe: _ ia aa F Seormcer'in patent for “ improve- ey Muents in giving signals and sounding alarms ip ~ distant places, by means of alestta currents @ransmitted through metalic cireuits.” This Seems to have been the first telegraph that was a in topes — & Wheatstone’s telegraph was a needle telegraph. ‘Ihe: used five magnetic needles and five ibe An ¢lectro-magnet was used to sound an alarm. A Aecond patent, taken out by Cooke only, was issued in April, 1838. These instruments were found to be very imperfect, and after a short trial abandoned A different form of telegraph, the invention of the same parties, having bat two needles, has, until very recently, been in eral use in Eagland ; but the Morse systew is now being adopted there and upon the continent. The last patent taken out by Cooke & Wheat- stone is dated May 6, 1845. Daring the same year an ne a iament was obtained invor- porating “ The Electric Telegraph Com: A working these patents. — — The needle telegraph is, comparatively, very slow ; the average tea og message being but 14 words per minute. It is, however, yet ex- tensively used in England. F. S. Morse first conceived the ides of an electric telegraph ; and in the year Isso he had telegraph constructed, the basis of bis present simple and beautiful instrament.
