The banks | ig r — yee are lending par on the new government fives at pee at tn ee ee eT 4 per cent, ond taking the trouble and riak Of pay | “wes cassetsses of the: Mnanell condition of the ing up tin specie nd ota ng certificates. Money | city of Milwaukie, furnished wy ” the Mayo was offered on Saturday to several parties at SJ, and . on England, as was to ve expected, bas some | Bonde iknued in al@ ef railroads, what declined during the week. Rankers’ bills have fallen an eighth to merchants’ a trifle more. But the business done has been small, there having been no Cunard steamer trom this port. The chief event of note in Wall treet doring the week was the award of the new ten millions of government five per cent stock. The subject has been 0 thoroughly reviewed and explained in this column that there is no necessity to recur to it here. It may be remarked, however, that the news of the award, which went ont in the Boston steamer, will probably surprise foreign capitalists, who, if we may judge hy the bids of their agente here, expected to buy onr government securities a good deal cheaper than they can a quarter The banks are understood to | dahed. "The kas) according to the calculations of interest computers, was awarded at an average rate which nets 44 per cent to. the holder; it has gince risen, and is now in demand at 34, tho Jancary in- terest off, which is equal to 53 for the term of the oan. The week has been very dull on the Stock Ex. change. Itopened on an exceedingly torpid ma> ‘ket; as it wore on, a decline began; this, after Iast- ing two or three days, was followed by a languid and partial reaction. Yesterday thece weve rumors, on the one side, that the Erie and Central were about to make up their differences and raise their fares; on the other, that the failure of ‘he crops tu certain sections of the West would materially inter- fere with the receipts of some of the western roads. Time alone can show what basis there may be for the latter rumor. For the credit of the common sense of the railroad community, it may be beped that the former is well founded. That the Eris and Central are doing themselves grave and almost fatal injury by their present reckless opposition, no sane man can doubt; nor is it a question which concerns them and their stockholders alone; the whole coun- try is interested in the settlement of a controversy which, if it lasts much longer, will produce fatal effects on railroad enterprise and railroad extension throughout the land. ‘The original and chief blame of this mischievous quarrel ought to rest upon the shoulders of those persons who combine the calling of stock gamblers with that of railway directors, and who, to make money in their stock operations, have not serupled to rain the credit and break down the re sources of the institutions which were under their control. But this is past remedy now, The question uow before the railroad community is whether these two concerns can adjust their disputes, or no. If, as we understand it, the only points of difference are the amount of money which the Erie requires to desist from its suicidal policy of low fares, and the shape in which the subsidy shoald be put, we should imagine that any two clear-headed men of business could settle the dispute in half an hour. It is high time this were attempted in earnest. The following table will show the fluctuations in the stock market during the past week:i— Missourt 6's.
