Our Richmond Correspondence. en of bie asd sslosts his devotion to the South Ricuwonwp, Va., August 9, 1858, tein eoaetonen of , AR ie wore he ‘Me Feeling io Virginia in Reference to Douglas— | Mr, Breckisrige 08 ® Tor the Fresigency when Letcher on the Stump—Character af the Contest Sor the Governorship— Phe Whigs and Geo. W. Somers— Wise Looming Up—State of Feeling here in Reference to the Ocean Telegraph, §¢., §¢- So farasIcan ascertain the state of feeling in ‘Virginia in reference to Douglas is not what might be inferred from his position as regards the Soath. Lecompton being held as no test of democracy, but rather an abstract question, in reference to which the right of private opinion is fully conceded, he cannot, of course, be regarded as without the fold, since he is guilty of no violation of any of the car- dina! principles upon which the party is based. Far from desiring his defeat, a directly contrary feeling exists in Virginia, the idea being that when this intervening obstacle—Lecompton—is removed, @ natural reunion will ensue apon the old and still undisturbed principles of the party. The worst feel- ing that existed here in regard to Douglas’ so-called defection was that of chagrin or regret; but co far from the existence of a desire for his overthrow in Minois, I feel assured his victory would be hailed with joy throughout Virginia. The Old Dominion @oes not exact a too strict or technical adherence to party discipline. In politics, as in anlaien, she is disposed to concede a Jatitude in way of private opinion, which, as the character of the democratic or; tion in State shows, is not inconsistent with strength and unity. The idea, therefore, that she condemns 1 ae an abstract pause ig ene is entirely erroneous for can she herself to the idea of any ul timate sinister design on his part, such as the con- struction of a new party based, as it is said, upon a union of anti-Lecompton democrats Know Nothings and disaffected black republicans. Rather than see his ee cee willingly withhold any farther of nay, acquiesce in, this anti-Lecomp- ton abstraction, that he might render it fully availa- ble for his re-election. I speak not without authori- ty when I make these assertions, and future events will vindicate their trath. J am informed that Letcher has taken the stump te vindicate himself from the charges of abolition affiliations, predicated upon his endorsement of Dr. Raffner’s abolition address, delivered before the Franklin Society at Lexington, in 1847. The letter of the Doctor denying the statement of Letcher, that obnoxious sentiments were embodied in the publish- pei seedy —_ ae not ee before ~~ society has ma ly dama; prospects. is, doubtless, because of see came produced by this that he has thus betaken himself to his vindication before the people. This designed as a foreabadowing of the future course of that paper, as well asa hint to Huater’s friends to embrace Breckinridge in ‘their support ‘advocacy of Preaiden- tial aspirants. Jt tallies precisely my information op this bead; and no jess sifintficant is tt with reference to the Becessity which gave rise to this coalition. gaat rl Gg 1 Wi! a on hi reteramore wo that when be by at least twenty ogress. And what with reference to the positions of himaecif and Hunter as they stand now in Virginia? lt is enough to tay, and Ido so from the very best data, that the ne- at “interpolation” charge made ‘inst r, to- | Cessity for this coalition wes produced by Hunter’s despe- gether with his frank, avowal oR in hig | tate condition, as retlected in the pens tone with re- inions with reference to slavery since the date of | fe7enoe to the governorsh'p. A Wise man is certain to be elected, whoever he may be; and then doubts will no longer exist with reference to the relative strength of both in Virginia. Another effect of this coalition will be to remove the silly objection herefore advanced, that the selection of Wise in preference to Hunter would lead toa division ia of the . Tbe surrender of Hunter's claim to Breckinriage removes this objection, which would be anienable under any © circumstances, bot stil! leas now, when he is exercising his influence for another. To every view of this coalition, ite effect will be to streogtnen Mr. Wise, for he cango be- fore the Convention with Virginia as a unit for hun. ‘The times bode anything but peaco among the editorial Sener Wye the accession of Daniel 0 the corps editorial we eball have five political editors tn this city, all, with tne exception of two— Mesars. lyler and Wise, of the Enquirer — a8 antagovistic ag the poles and rather heilicose The bat. tle for the succession, it would seem, wiil be fought here, anda pretty hard battie it will be, judging by the element which compose the ranke of the beiligerents. He is at present at Accomtc, in process of training. In all, we are likely to bave such a diversity of dad no city w the Uaion is capable of fur- nishiog. t address, were the only grounds of defence in his whole case. He is now reduced to the latter plea, but whether that will avail to uit him is a ques tion of extreme doubt. After all, the difficulty in this case does not lie in any doxbts regarding Mr. Letcher’s fideli'© ‘-d5y, sue im the expediency of nominating @ iaan who at any time was identified with an abolition movement. The consideration is with reference to the safety of the party; and in this view it is deemed "better to sacrifice Mr. Letcher, rather than by his elevation to the Governorship to furnish the opposition with an argument which would prove detrimental under more critical circum- stances. The contest for the Governorship in this State assumes a peculiar character by reason of the adyo- cacy of Mr. Faulkner's claims by the Enquirer. The issue between the Wise and Hunter party is directly made by the presentation of this gentle- man’s name un such an auspice. Letcher is known to be the candidate of the Hunter party, and the presumption is, from the source whence Faulk- ner’s name comes, that he is the candidate of the Wise party. There are, however, many other pro- minent men in Virginia, no less qualified for the » who are known to he for Wise, and hese, doubtless, will in turn receive & favorable notice from the Enquirer. There is a dearth of that class of men among the Hunter ranks, and hence their pertinacious adherence to Letcher in the teeth of his embarrassed position. It is generally understood here that should Letcher be the nominee of the democratic party, George 'W. Somers, of Kanawha county, will be presented La the whigs. Somers was defeated by Johnson, predecessor of Wise, in 1851, upon the grounds, as his party allege, of his identity with an emanci- pation movement in Virginia in 1832. In his case, it was alleged by his friends that there was an en- tire justification for his position in the general eman- cipation sentiments produced by the negro insurrec- tion at Southampton county in 1831. They maintain that should Somers and Letcher be the competitors in the next race, the c! would Pag unavailing, in view of Letcher’s complicity in Raffher move- ment fifteen years subsequently, when there were none of the palliating circumstances which attended the movement in ipation parol the ete be waged upon emanci grounds, or ive complicity of the two in that obnoxious movement, the odds would be considerably against Letcber and his supporters. The war promises to be a pretty ac- tive one, whether we view it after the candidates of both parties are in the field or before the demo- cratic nomination is made. Meanwhile, Wise is looming high above all in his career towards the White House. Monagas, but also of Guireppi and Guterrez, The subject was submitted to the decision of the English Cabinet and tae Duc of Malakoff, at London. Neither of the two governments saw fit to insist upom the protocol, but demanded the delivery of the three persoas mentioned as a satisfaction for the alleged violation of the French and English Logations in the compulsory delivery of Guterres and Guiseppi. The two Minlaters have sent in despatches complying with their instructions, but no. thing definite bas yet been decided upoa by the govern- ment. It is possible that Gen.
