are reall; in Missouri,” and a Barow of th» Field” the next Presidency, is the theme of |e He- Ray's last political joke. The defeat of Blair, through “the intervention of another opposition can- @idate,” the Heravp considers a good prognostic of ‘the inevitable defeat of the opposition in 1860, from the irreconcilable divisions which exist in the ranks of the tion, The Heranp regards (and we ih the Hsxavp) that this defeat of Blair in uri, and the first returns from the Kentacky elections as “the turn! of the tide.” But that a penne for joking, which som times seizes the ipeaup—that {hing for popular quizes which puffed into importance George Law, and almost elected Fre mont— which ventilated so lately the con- tradictory qualifications of Simon Cameron, has — perpetrated several very good jokes. Because a man is nominated in Charleston he must, f that fact, be a disunionist—so a man born in @ stable must mecessarily be a horse; or one whose accoachement. was accidentally in a bake oven tarns out a veritable The Hekavp intimates that Mr. Buchanan may be reluctantly compelled, “against his wishes and nis expectations, to stand in the breach, to save his party from absolute destruction.” The Hexaup, in the Bame issue states, that only “the suicidal Fremont and Fillmore division of 1856" caused Mr. Buchanan’s election, and it has already shown that for twenty — the democracy have been in a minority, and ve oniy succeeded in consequence of the divisions of the opposition. If, in the Heaanp’s view of the powers of parties, we submit whether even Mr. Bu- ehanan could effectually “stand in the breach” against the united and combined forces of the opposi- tion— if the nomination by the Charleston Convention ‘would metamorphose “its most conservative nomi- wee” into a “South Carolina disunioatst,” which it would “he extremely difficult to carry across Mason and Dixon's live” how could Mr. Buchanan “stand ‘im the breach” when placed there by the Charleston Convention? But if nomipation of Mr. Buchanan by the Charleston Convention would not be regarded “as an insufferable concession to the South Cafoliua @isunionists,” why should such disastrons conse- quences follow the nomination of aoy other truly conservative man? And if “it appears to be gene- rally understood” that “the next nominee, if a new man, must be given to the South’ through the Charleston Convention, by what process of ratio- cination cap the Herat predicate such unfortunate consequences to attend the action of that conven- tion? Surely the mere fact of coy py | the can- @idate in Charleston will not make him a disnnionist. And, since the very conservative tone of Senator Hammond's late speech, may we not hope that aa ‘era of nine conservatism has dawned upon the gallant State of South Carolina; and that sach sad @onsequences will not attend the nomination of ‘an; Southern man” at Charleston? Batas the Heaarn is merely ventilating a good joke. in consequence of the bot weather and the glorious result of the St. Louis election, we must not put teo much importance apon = vaticination of our joking cotemporary of New ‘This propensity reaches a climax in the following: — Next, with regard wo the opposition nominee Fat € unite opeu Fremont. “eward Backs, Orittenden, Cameron, sod every other candidate, the opposition sec tons and factions, for the eave of union end the balance of power in the South, may be compelled to fall back upos Gen. The “abominable associations and principles of Seward” defeated Scott in 1862— “bat in 1860 Seward will be no longer the incubus to break bim down.” It is this singular intermixtare of truth and fiction that gives a serious air to the jokes of the “Hanacp,” that sometimes mislead the ‘anwary. The “Herat” will commit itself permanently to no man as —itis merely ventilating certain men as “feelers” to —— sentiment. Lately Cameron was paraded, duly apparailed in principles that suited every taste, and did violence to no latitade But the opposition “do not seem to like him,” and the He Ratp asks, by way of testing public sentiment, “What, then, do they think of Gen. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Sarurpay, August ld—6 P. M. The Vanderbilt, which saiied for Europe this day, took out $154,412 in specie. Exchange bas been dull and rather lower since Wednesday; very little English exchange was done, and only a few parcels of French, at last quotations. Money continues hard tolend at 3 tod percent. The Stock Exchange was as dull as it usnally is on Saturday. Several prominen* operators are out of town, and those who remain seem to have no desire at present to enter into new combinations. A majority of the Board are bears, but they actas though they might any fine morning turn bulls and buy stocks. Every one is satisfied that, so loug as the public re- mains aloof, stocks must generally decline; bat it is equally certain that, in the present condition of the money market, a very little outside speculation would produce an inflation of considerable exteat. The rumor of the pest day or two is that a promi- nent operator, who has been conspicuous of late on the be aod vlally as a supporter of Mis sonyi sixes entra Reading, has changed front, or is mt to so. The effect po tuced wonld warrant ab hypothesis that such was the case. Prices tis morning were somewhat better thao yee terday. New York Central, Erie, Reading, Galena, Rock Island and Toledo all closed this morning a shade better than last evening, though the improvement is so slight as to be hardly quotable. Rumors of a settlement of the Erie and Central disputes help the market. The Michigan stocks hardly participated in the recovery, but simply beld their ground. Illinois Central was particularly active. It is supposed that orders reached this city last evening directing purchases to be made on Eng- Nich account: 830 shares of the stock were sold at an advance of one per cent over the last reported sales, and $17,000 of the bonds, also at an improve- ment. Panama and Pacific Mail were steady, with- out much animation. Pennsylvania Coal, which has just declared a dividend of three per cent, sold at 75, dividend off. The transactions in bank stocks were light: Bank of Commerce sold at a decline of + from last quotations; National and Metropolitan stocks were better by} a 4. In State secarities there was not much business done, and no change in prices. Missouri sixes do not recover from the de- cline, and there is little demand for them. The two kinds of land grant bonds continue to fluctuate with- out much permanent alteration: to-day the La Crosse are selling at 224, and the Chicago, St. Paul and Fond du Lac at 213. The market closed dull, bat without concessions from the eellers; and the Stock Exchange adjourned over till Monday. There was an informal meeting of the Board in the afternoon, and some transactions made, without particular change in price. A sale of the new United States fives was made at 1033.
