Mr. Allea locomotive engine had been laaliy improved Ull it had beooms one of the most pievee of machinery in the world, He esid thet enginer for pro- he was decidedly of the opinion that the two propellers were better than one. But, however this might be, the en- perfeotly sdepted to canal boats was sure It wes the pecubar province of steam to di the horse, He looked forward with confidence to the time when two steam capal boats, propelled by/oue engiue, would would go through from Builalo to New York in tive days, carry ing 400 tops of freight. Resident Exgineer Vaxyum, who had accompanied the doats. then said that there were objections to the uve of stesmtoge on the canals. They were so short, that some- times the stern apd sometimes the bow toucues the bot- tm. The movement was irregu'ar, and too much of a wave created. The propellers, arrauged like toe P. L. Sternberg, with two wheels, rate much more satistac- torily. They create less wave, and their movement is more steady. When moving at ‘the rate of five mies an hour the waves were lees tvan three inches in height, and not gufficieat to injure the canal banks. The tugs at the same rate of speed made a wave of from two to turee feet, which would inevitabiy demage the canal. He thougbt propeliers might be constructd which wou!d car- TY irom 150 to 200 tons, and tow another boat carrying aa equal amount of freight’ He regarded the experiment of the Sternberg and the Charles Wack highly saccessful. Mr. Tuomas Corren RvGGuEs was next called uponyand stated that be thought two boats could be used ofone. He wes in favor of raising the bridges to allow Digber chimpeys, and ‘that those in Buffalo should be raisad higher than elsewhere, in consequence of the frequent sudden rise of the water in the caual, 03- casioned by the wind blowing down the lske. The new government loan is still the principal topic of conversation in business circles. The pre- vailing impression appears to be that the govern- ment has done well in obtaining so hich a premium. It must be remembered, however, that at 106 the new loan would be as cheap as, and no cheaper, than the Fives of 1865, at their market price this morning —103. To be as high as the United States Sixes the new Fives should sell at 108. It was suggested this morning that the new stock be put on the list at the Brokers’ Board ; but a difficulty arising in relation to the interest, which runs from the date of the award, and the first instalment of which, from August 10 to January 1, is, singularly enough, placed to the credit of the successful bidder in the public accounts. The subject was referred to a committee, which will pro- bably report to-morrow. We hear, meanwhile, of sales in the street at 105, and a shade above. Th: | reader will find in another column some impo:tan’ information in regard to the bids and the awards To-day the public have been kept in complee 1 m the subject; for the despatch to anne O) the press, she marning [aners, not only conveyed very little useful ore mation, but actually contained several pre os- terous and contradictary statements. A later des- patch corrects one of these, and mentions that the total amount of bids exceeded $38,000,000, and that every bidder who offered over 412-100 premiam will obtain a part, at least, of the sum asked for. It is understood that a very small portion of the loan has been taken for forelgn account. A large share of the New York bids seems to have been made on speculation; it is likely that an effort will be conse- quently made to create some activity in the stock. It will be well, however, to ascertain when the other ten millions are to be issued, before the pre- sent iesue is carried too high. One of the bidders, Mr. Robbins, asked for two millions at first, but tele- graphed on Monday to reduce his demand to one; the Secretary refused to notice the telegraph, and | awarded Mr. Robbins the whole two millions, at an | average of 5 38-100 per cent Some of the success- ful bidders began to-day to make their payments into the Sub-Treasury. The total amount received from this source was $2,963,000. The feature of the Stock Exchange continues to be intense and uniform dulness. All the operators, in and out of the board, seem to be out of town; no one has any desire to buy or to sell anything, The movement of prices is as regular and monotonous as the swell of the sea in a calm: a slight rise is follow ed by an equally slight depression, and so on con tinually. At the least symptoms of investment or speculative purchases by the outside public, stocks move with prodigious rapidity and force; in the ab. sence of any such symptoms the general tendency in the long run appears to be downward. The two land grants—the La Crosse and the Fond du Lac—are now both selling for the same price, about 224. The business in bank stocks was more general than usual this morning; but very littie was done in each, and there was no change to note. The market closed dull and weak.
