The Great Comet Come at Last, We learn from our despatches by the Arago that the great comet of Charies V., as it is sometimes oalied, but better known to astronomers as that of Fabricius, has ‘at last made its appearance, and will very shortly be vist- bie to the maked eye, It has been seen from the Paris Observatory through its telescopes, and is pronounced by Avago the genuine article, A sharp lookout for it has been kept up for a year or two past by the European comet seekers. It is not yot known whether it will appear as it cnoe did, like a very large and bright star, or witha tail 100 degrees in lengta. The curious hope that it will {ts wondrous tale unfold.” Ita first appearance was in ‘1264, and ite dizappearance took place on the 24 of October of that year, the day on which Pope Urban IV. died, ‘as the worid thought in strange coincidence. In 1556 it re-appeared and was observed by Paul Fabricius, astrono- mer to Charlies V., who executed a map of its path, which was published in November of that year. The Km Pperor considered it as special omen of his own approach- ing death ; but he lived for some years afterwards. It was then described as a grestand brilliant star, Its course was “through Virgo and Bootes, past the pole of the heavens into Cepbeus and Cassiopos.”’ The celebrated Dr. Hatley calculated iis elements more than a century aiterwai ds, and several othors after him. Thecaloulations ot Mr. Bomme, of Middelburg, of the Netherlands, of recent date, are more precise, and are generally sup- posed to be more reliable than those of his predecessors. This astronomer finally came to the conclusion thet in the year 1264, its ellipse bad « period of 110,643 days, or 302,922 years, expedited by planetary disturbances by 4,077 days, and that in 1856 ite mean motion corresponded to a period of 308.169 years. Ite present revolution he calculated would be shortened by perturbations 10.48 years, and the comet should reach its perihelion about the 24 of , 1868. Mr. , the great English astronomer, does not or did not entirely coincide with M. Bomme. He wrote to Profes- bor Littréw, director of the Observatory at Vienna, urging him to search for the original chart of Fabricius. This was accomplished, after considerable exertion, through the medium of the newspapers, and with it was obtained, very unexpectedly, from the ducal livraries at Wolfen Duttel aod Gotba, a descriptive treatise by the Nurembarg astronomer, Joachim Heller, who had observed this very comet for fifty-three days—a much longer time than Fa- bricius had taken for his observations. Thus # morecom- plete elementary series was obiained. Mr. Hind thore- upon modified his own views, concluding that the comet would basten its return, for several reasons of an astro- nomical nature, and that its reappearance was near at hand. This, then, is the month during which the comet of Pope Urban and Charles V. should properly make its appearance. According to our latest advices, as we bave already mestioned, tt has appeared to the French observers, and will soon be visible with ite long tail, if it bas not dropped off its leet journey. It is rather an unfortanate circu stance that the troubles in the Albany Dudley Observa tory have occurred atso interesting a moment, and when every astronomical eye is looking carefully into te heavens. Here is a splendid chance about to be lost by our Dutch observers. Perhaps the trustees themselves are sufticiently accomplished to undertake the work of ob- servation, if Dr. Gould, as they insinuate, is not. In that case, if Mr. Oloott takes the comet seeker in hand, the Doctor, by way of reciprocity, might employ himself in doing & little diecounting for Mr. Olcots’s customers, giving preference to astronomical borrowers—who are gonerally poor—by way of encouragement to science, The Smith- sonian and the Coast Survey might slip in for an accom- modation also, not being known ever to have had too much bestowed on them to suit the employés; and, in. stead of Mr. Olcott's having had ® little contemptible Down Fast comet named after him—contrary to the rule of astronomers—he may come in and share in the efful- Burrato, August 10-1 P. Sale of the Hudson's Bay Company's Property in Washington Territory. With regard to the proposed purchase by the United States government of the possessory right and land of the Hudson’s Bay Company in the vi- cinity of Frazer river, an idea seems to prevail that it is a new \ roposition on the part of the com- pany; but it is uc. vo. As far back as 1852 a pro- posal was made by the Hudson's Bay Company and Puget’s Sound Agricultural Company to our govern- ment, through the then Governor, Sir George Simp- gon, to sell all the property and rights of both com- panies fora million of dollars. The company es%t- mated the value at $2,300,000, but they were will- ing to take the former sum for them. A difference of opinion exists as to the value of anything the company may have tosell, among parties who are or pretend to be acquainted with the affairs of that lo- cality. Some affirm that it would be a cheap bar- gain at the price asked—among them Governor Stevens—while others state that the improvements company have acknowledged, and which of course they cannot sell.
