The current rate for money—three per eent—iteelf explains how difficult it must be for a bank to increase ita loans. If indeed, any banks bad been transferring items from the specie to the loan column during the week, the result might be what we see. We shall have the Persia’s news to-morrow. Meanwhile the following are the latest quotations i for American stocks in London, per Vanderbilt:— . 7% a 80 Do. da, 7 ieee “Woe 8 5 1. ‘8, 1 1 De. ao. $100 shares, $10 paid dis, 28 a 26 Michigan Central 6's, 1860, so a 84 Do, 3969..... « 2a MM si a 8 sa 62 oon 6 ae 2 sla & We 9 6 a 78 66 a 67 30 8 40 30 8 35 30 a 35 ba lt so 8 8 sa 0 The attendance at the board this morning was even thinner than usual on Mondays. Many promi- nent operators were absent, and the want of outside orders was the more severely felt in consequence, with the exception of Reading there was no activity in any of the “fancies” and a general decline in price. Reading, on which bul's and bears are con- centrating their attention at the preseat time, is being as actively bought, chiefly, it is understood, for Pennsylvania account, ast is freely sold by the operators of Wall street. Should the current stories prove true about a renewal of purchases for British interest, the bears are likely to suffer severely. The rise this morning was equal to j per cent, with large sales; the stock closing firm. Panama likewise continues to improve. There is little stock in the market, and the prospect of increased dividends from the traffic to be brought into being by the Frazer river excitement stimulates the de- mand. It rose two per cent this morning. Most of the other stocks dealt in were lower. Prominent among those which declined was Pacific Mail, which tell to85 and closed very heavy, with sellers but no buyers at that figure. This is equivalent to a fall of tive per cent since Friday. Among the causea which are assigned for the decline are the certainty that Vanderbilt has not got the Nicaragua Transit grant, and the possibility that it may fall into hands that may use it; the announcement of a rival line on the Pacific, &¢., &e. Mew York Cen- tral was 4 lower; Michigan Central, 4; Galena, |; Rock Island, J; Toledo, 3; Milwaukie and Mississippi, 1 percent; Harlem, J. There were about 200 bank shares taken this morning at last quota. tions. Among the State securities, the most active still are the Missouris, which, like the others, are without change in price. Ilinois Central bonds were active ataslight improvement, caused, it is said, by foreign demand for investment. La Crosse land grants were steady at the highest prices of Saturday. The committee appointed by the board to investigate the non-payment of the August inte: rest had a meeting to day, and wil! probably shortly report. The report may possibly suggest some inqui- ry into the policy of such investigating committees in the Board of Brokers. It is not universally understood that that board is the general superintendent of the financial institntions of the country at large ; nor are all its members aware of the responsibility which such superintendence would of course in volve. If the Stock Exchange be, in reality, a tri- banal exercising concurrent jurisdiction with the city Judge over financial frands, the public may be expected to demand some changes in its constita- ion—snch, for instance, as the opening of its doors to reporters. ‘The market was a shade lower, and rather heavy in the afternoon, with the exception of Reading and Panama. The business done was light, Reading, asin the morning, being the most active of the stocks dealt in. Pacitic Ma opened with a small sale at an advance over the 1ing price, but speedily fell back, and closed dall at 544.85. Panama rose, with large sales, to 115, an improvement of 3 per ceut since yesterday. The closing prices at Groes- beck & Hoyt’s were:—Central, 84] @ 7; Erie, 18}; Harlem, 11); Hudson, 28); Reading, 514; Michigan Central, 612; Southern, 234; Panama, 115}; Mlinois Central, 7 77); La Crosse, 4), &e. The market closed soft. There is hardly any demand for foreign exchange. The highest bolders are asking 110 a 109] for ex- change on London, but they are not selling any par- cels above the lowes: rate. Paris may be quoted 5.12 a 5.11; bat there is very little business doing. The Wednesday's Cunard steamer will probably take out about three quarters of a million of specie; over $500,000 are already arranged for. ‘The following was the business of the Sub-Treasury to day:— Total receipt. ..-- +--+ see $952,332 29 Ol which from custome 243,000 0 Pay mewts 236.343 47 Belance.. + 5260,719 96 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House today were $18,284,193 92, and the balaaces $1,125,310 83: ‘The Metropolitan certificates amonnt to $6,000. Mr, Nicolay sold today at anction twenty-five shares New York and New Haven genuine stock at $50, and thirty-seven shares repudiated at $1 per sbare.
