THE TWENTY FIFTH ANNUAL CONVENTION—THE ORATOR AND POSM. ‘A large and fashionable audience, comprising the mem bers and their friends of the above society, aseombied Jest evening in the Fourteenth street Presbyterian church» where an oration by Edwin P. Whipple, of the Gamma, Boston, and a poem by Joha C. Saxe, Eeq., of Burlington, ‘Vermont, were delivered. The meeting was announced to be held in the Library of the Historical Society, but owing to the large attendance the committee were obliged to alter their arrangements ani adjourn to the Fourteeath street Presbyterian church, which, notwithstanding the oppressive beat, was crowded in all parts, A band was ‘Stutioned in the gallery, which during the evening played several popular pieces. Mr. William H. L. Barns presided, and afer an appropriate prayer from the Rev. Henry M. Svudder, of India, introduced Mr. Powry P. Wmrrix, who delivered an oration on *Young Men in History.” He commenced by stating that ‘im the pages of history we found that man was moving snd moving forward, and if we ecrutinized the character of this progress we would fiad ¢hat it principally went in the direction of improvement, and the ideas of that im. provement were the ideas ef youth; for the world, indeed, moved under the impulge of youth. There are buyers in the market at current quotations, without any regard to the August coupens. The ‘Bix\h Avenue Railroad stook sold this moraing a: 114 per cent. The scarcity of several fancy railroad stocks coa- tinues, without disturbing the equanimity of the shorts; they freely put out contracts, at whatever difference in Prices may exist, with the most perfect cond- dence in the ultimate dissolution of sone of the Companies and rapid depreciation in others. There are ‘several railroad stocks in the m rket, future divideads on which are entirely out of the question. This fact is admitted by overy stockholder, and the stocks are usei solely for speculative purposes. There are other railroad stocks, used principally for speculation, in which there is yes a lingering hope in the minds of holders thet small divi. dends may, at some not very remote period, be re- sumed. That hope {6 stronger now than it will be six months or a year hence, when the fact will be pretty clearly established that future psyments on the stock are utterly impossible. In this last list the Reading oo- couples the most prominent position. The company has Deyond all question declared its last dividend. Tne fiaaa- cial exhibit for the present fiscal year will satisfy all ta- terested parties of ihe truth of this statement. Cleveland ‘and Toledo is similarly situated. The last annual report shows that the stockholders can get nothing for Jeare, perhaps pever again. Milwaukie and Mississippi is another permanent defauiter. The stocks o’ these roads must settle down to about the points ruling for Harlem and Erie. At the second buord the market was moderately buoy. ‘ant and slightly active. The ab. sence of operations on time, buyer's option, is an unfa- vorable feature for a rise, or for even a temporary infie- tion. The largest pull speculators are filled up with stock, and their efforts are made solely for the redactien of their supplies. They are not in a condition to purchase, ‘and have no desire to do so. Their object is to saddie a portion of their burden upon cther’s shoulders. ‘The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House were larger this morving, amounting to $17,872,616 67 against $14,- 886,776 77 yesterday. The Long Island Insurance Company haz declared a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent, payacle July 1; the Lowell Railroad a dividend of three per cent, payable July 1. ‘The details of the bids for the three leans required by the government of the State of New York will be fousd under our telegraphic bead. This is the first dividend ever paid by this com pany, and we understand (hat the road is earniog more than eight per cent per annum on the capital stock. About two yeers sitce the fipances of this read were in a low prices through auctioneers and brokers. For- tunately the concern, in its darkest hour, attracted the Attention of @ gentleman well known in the financial cir- cles of Wail strect, and it bas been principaily through his individual efforte that the stock has been raised from fifteen to twenty dollars per share to ninety-four per cent. At the time the stock was so much depressed the company was deeply in debi and upon the very verge of baok ruptey. Nothing bas saved it but the moet untiring in- dustry and the most judicious management on the part of the executive officers of the road. Its debt has been reduced from $600,000 to $350,000, which is permanently funded. The road is completed to Harlem, and will soon be extended to the bank of the Harlem river. The rapid recovery of this company only shows the great difereace between good and bad management.
