Such is & brief outline of the firat great musical festi- val ever given in the United States. It isan afair of the performers themselves, for no director would take the risk of the immense expense—probabdly not lees than $8,000. The profits, if any there be, will be given to the funds of the several oberitable and protective so- cieties for musicians. We opine, however, that the resi dent musicians give this festiva! more as a mater of pride than as a matter of monoy. They desire to show what progress the art bas made in this city; and itis really greater than any one—unless an ertist or amateur—can imagine. The orchestra at the Academy ou Sunday will be worthy of Vienna or Paris, while the excellence of our military bands is paten! to every traveller.
