Shortly after noon on the 17th of May we arrived at Fort Laramie, having made 177 miles in three days and & half. ‘The 16th was acold and disagreeable day, like the pre- ceding one; the wind was very high and i: rained some. ‘We passed Scott's Biuffs about noon. From Fort Leavenworth to Big Blue there is high rolling Prairie; in some places it is quite hilly, and abounds in crecks, nearly all of which are pretty well wooded, The foil is good, and quite similar to that of the Northern Missouri. Between the Big Biue aud Big Sandy tho prairie ia very fiat; frequently as far as the eye can reach it is a plain as level as the ses; the soll is good, but there is uo tigrber at all, which almost disqualifies it as a farming region. Water is also ecarce. At the Big Sandy and along up the Little Biue the country is rougher ana more picturesque; there is some excellent goi] and « good supply of water and wood, Tae valley of tue Piste river is fertile; grass grows well in tt, and there ts some timber. A continuous yee of sand hills or boufts run alovg nearly parallel to, snd from four to eight miles from, the river; theee sand hills are several miles in width, ‘apd almort barren. Fifty mites west of Kear- ney the land is very poor, both in th - bottoms and on the Diuffe. Tne fine rich prairie soil ceases and thore is nothing bat a See ere surface, Grass grows poor'y ; there is no we ravelling would be very aiff. cult were it not for buifalo chips, and as buffsio have ceased to frequent the upper waters of the Piste they will goon be wanting, The land is too poor for auytbiag; even the wild Lodisns and buffalo cam scarcely live upon it. The Piatte (sbailow) river is not deep for pavigation, is too deep and too full of quicksanos for ford- mg, While there is not sufficient wood for hundreds of miles to bridge it. Between the North and South Fork o: the Pimtte the soil is rongber and even poorer than on the soutn ‘Dank of the South Fork. Iaoeed, there is nothing between Fort Kearney and Fort Laramie to inviteagriouttureorfarm- ing setticmnis. FORT LARAMIR. ‘This military station is situated on Laramie creek, in the midst of arovgh, sandy, barren country. There is some good grass several miles distant, but generally it is quite poor. Wood is scarce. The fort consists of two or three two story wooden buildings, aad about twenty one sory adobe siructures, alro oLe or two stone houses, all of which seem to have been built irregularly, in any and ever) direction As usual with this class of forts, there is « open square, centrally situated, for qill bave Leen plastered on the oatside, eee. to those st Fort Kearney, though the commanding off cer reports them as nearly useless The povt is commaad- ed by Major J. Synde, of the Seventd ae. There is ope company here at present. The fort is capacitated to quarter three. I beleve they have chained the route. ‘The distances apply to the old military road. There are some cul «snow which shorten the route.
