There is not much unfinished busicess on the books, and what there is is of a routine character. Now that the “heated term’’ has commenced it is not very likely that the intel- Joctua! and philanthropic powers of our City Fathers will be put im active operation to devise measures for the wel- fare of their constituents. Judging from the past, it te rather to be supposed that they will take It easy, aip their lager and lururiate in the cxuntry or by the seaside, while the hard working tax payers, who furnish muscle, brain and wealth te the community, and who place these men ‘na sentinels to look after their interests, will be left to The Captured Santanistas at Tampico, TO THE BDITOR OF THE HERALD. May I ask you to inform me, through your paper, ‘what was the ultimate tate of the party of Santaniste ‘oMoera who were taken while attempting to land at Tam- After their capture by Gov. Garza, they were sent to a email village in the Interior for safety, since when no- ‘thing has been heard of them. There is no reason to be- Lieve they have been shot, and if such had been the case, the affair would have made a great noise in Mexio, from ‘the prominent position held by several of them. It is to De presumed that when Garza withdrew from before ‘Tampico, he may have taken or sent these prisoners to ‘Viotoria the capital of the State. Miss Scxpmananp Parvowen—Eliza Ann San- Goriand, sentenced to Sing Sing prison a few days since ‘Sor grand iarceny, has besa pardoned by Governor King. A ‘appeal was made in her favor, and it appears to have successfi! ‘The June Term of the Law Courts. This being the Grst Monday of the month, the trial terms of our various law courts will be re-opened, aud es Juiz wii be the Last month for jury causes until after the eum- mer vacation, it is expected that all parties with cases ca the calendars will be anxious to have thom cisposed of during this and the next month. ‘The general term of the Supreme Court will not aii until the 26th of June. Tho third trial of Michael Cancemi, tho Italian, charged with the murder of policeman Anderson in this city, ia July nat, ia set down for this morning in tne Supreme Court, (clronit.) It will be remembered that Messrs. Bi pkman and Asbmeade were assigned by the Courtto defend the accused, and did defend him on the two for- mer tzials. Upon the first trial, before Jadge Roosevelt, tho jory failed to agree; on the second, belore Judge Davies, the jury found the prisoner guilty. Judge Davies obarged on the law different from the view taken by Judge Rocse- velt. Cancem! was sentenced to be hanged. Under an 01d and obsolete law of the State, disinterred by bis cous- sel, the case was taken to the Court of Appeals, where, after argument, a cew trial was ordered, which is set down for to-day. If the prosecution are not prepared te proceed, the prisoner’s counsel will move for his dis- charge on bis own recognizance. In the Court of Common Pleas a sult has been entered by Charles J. McDonald against Cornelius K. Garrison and Charles Morgan to recover something over $36,000 for service rendered the Nicaragua Transit Company. We published the complaint a few days since. This legal contest with the Commodores would. prove rather warm work for this weather, so it is not probable that it will be urged on until after the summer vacation. ‘The calendars of the other courts contain the ordinary kind of actions. ‘The Court of General Sessions opens this merning, Roe- corder Barnard presiding. The calendar for the present month contaies a large number of important cases, and the proceedings will undoubtedly be interesting. Several capital cases, which bave been postponed from time to time, will be finally disposed of this term, among which we may name the following indictments for murder, now in the safe of the District Attorney’s office:— Daniel Cunningham, for the homicide of Patrick MoLarghlin, elias Paudeen Martin Dowd, for killing John Dooley. Pau! Hernandez, for shooting his wife in West Broadway. Leroy Ruscher, for shooting the boy MoTarthy in a lager bier sejoon in William street. Fravcis Didier will be tried for arson in the third degree, and Nathaniel Roberts and Cyrus P. Dunbam for compounding a felovy. ‘This Iaiter case excited consi- derabie interest during the preliminary ezam:nation, it having been alleged by thecompiarpant, (a faro gambier,) thet the defendants represented themselves as having an fluence over the Mayor's squad of police. The case of Bricbs, the alleged extensive stolen goods receiver, will ne brought before the Court, and as soon as the Grand Jury is organized the case ot J. B. Smith, (who has been teld to bail for defrauding the city treasury), will be brought before its attention. The calendar, in addition to to Ve Cases, Coptains the usual nuwber of larcecy aod porgiary cbe which, together with the murder trials, will keep ju jw and ropresentatives of the press Suny til the end of ts term. Dramatic and Musical Matters. ‘The first week of the summer opera season bas netted a bancsome profitto the managers, and resulted in un- mixed satisfaction to the public. The operas performed bave been ‘La Favorita,” ‘La Traviata” and the “Bar- ber,’ the latter giving Miss Adeiaide Phillips an opporta- bity to sing Rosina At this latter performance on Satur- day afternoon Mme. de Gazzeniga. who has suddealy achieved great popularity here, sung a Spanish ballad. The house was fairly filled—fairly im every sense, as the sudience was composed a/most entirely of ladies, whose gay summor dresses made the par- quette look like a flower garden. Miss Phillips sang Rosina very well, and Briguoli and Gassier were ex- cellent. The opera for this evening is the “Trovatore,”’ with Mme. de Gazzaniga, Brignoli and Amodia in the prin- cipal réles. We re giad to see tha} there isa dispost- tion to support this company, which is really a very good one. Mr. Strakosch has returned to town after a seven months’ tour in the South and West. With kim camo Mile. Frezzolini, who purposes to return to Europe al- most immediately. For the next season Mr. Strakosch ‘bas engaged Mme. Colson, of the French Opera at New Orlesne, said to be a very bandsome woman and a very fire artist. She sings, we believe, in the style of Bosio, Mr. Junsa, basso of the Freach Opora, bas likewise been engaged by Mr. Strakoech. He bas a fine appearance, and ts an admirable artist in such music as that of Marcel ia the “Huguenots.”” ‘The Barnum. Lumley project does not seem to meet with ‘pasimous approval. Probably nothing definite will be settied about the Academy next season unt!! the retarn of Mr. Ullman from Furope. He departed om Saturday tn the City of Washington. A large pamber of the {nstrumeata! musicians, with Mr. Carl Anschutz as president, are making for 8 grand musical festival, ai fresco, on the 27th and 28th of this month. We presume that it will be after the fashion of the Furopean open alr festivals, which are very pleasant institutions. The several committess are now at work upon the details, and we may expect the official programme in a few days. ‘The theatres have given us nothing new, and in comse- quence the attendance has not been very large at any of thom. Mr. Hackett played four nights at Laura Keone's, to moderate houses, and Mrs, Bowers took her farewoll benefit at the same house om Saturday, aad was honored with a crowded and brilliant audience. Mme. lola Montez olosed ber engagement at the broadway theatre on Saturday, and the house will be closed for the present. There was nothing new at the other theatres. At Burton's this evening the manager will re-appear after several weeks’ absence, playing in one of his best farces, “Turning the Tables."’ The Ronzan! ballet troupe five two pieces, ‘The lilusion of Painter’ and the “Two Hypocrites,” all for the benefit,of the charming Lamou- reux. To morrow a new ballet will be preduced. At Laura Keene's theatre, now under the direction of Mr. Sothern, Miss Matilda Heron plays in a translation, by herself, of Fugene Sue's drama, “Mathilde.” The bill contains this refreshing note for the noble army of ‘dead heads ''-'The free admission is entirely suspended without any exception.” The ‘‘free admission” ought to consider iteelf bighly favored tn belng ‘“euspended” during such hot weather, and say with the Parisian critic, when simi- larly situated, ‘My thanks to the manager I have always been afraid that be would make a rule by which persons who had free entrée would not be allowed to leave the theatre until the performance bad been concluded” Dadinage apart, the free list is « great nuisance, and might ‘be much reduced at all the theatres. At Wallack’s theatre “Brigham Young”’ still keeps the bills, and promises to do so for some time tocoms. It is to be acted to night, with the “Lottery Ticket.” At Nible’s Garden the last week but one of the Ravels is arnouvced. They give “Pongo” and “M. Dechal- ‘meau’’ this evening, and M. Gabriel plays two parts. AW’ the Bowery theatre the bill for to-night includes three dramas: ‘The Scalp Hunters,” “Harvey Birch” and the “Fire Raiser.” Mr. Eddy, Mr. Robert Johnston and other favorites piay in these pieces. At the Museum the dramatic attraction for thia evening ia Reade’s play, ‘Two Loves and a Life,’ in which Mis Kate Denin makes her début bere. ‘The Golden Farmer’’ ‘will be p'ayed in the afternoon. ‘The managers of the French theatre, No. 586 Broad. way, enooursged by their success, have resolved to give two representations every week—on Tuesdays and Fri- days. A new piece is announced for to morrow. The Fthiopean Minstrels—Wood’s, Bryanta’ and Peel's— ‘til! fourish in spite of the hot weather, At Wood's they bring out to-night @ new sketch, illustrated by « pano- rama of the Hudson from Newburg to New York city. ‘Mr. Brougham closed a long and snocesafal engagement at the Howard Athenwum, Boston, on Saturday. He goes directly to fuifll engagements in the West Mise Laura Keene and her company have been very successful in Philadelphia. They remain one week longer in the Quaker City, anc then piay tm Raltimora. ‘Misa Charlotte Cushman is drawing crowded houses at the Boston theatre. The Hunter Woodie Society's benefit at Laura Keene's tant week was a dead failure, not half the expenses being recetved. The public has evidently had enongh of a cer. tain kind of benevolence. Mr. Clarke's benetit at Nibio's netted a haadsome sum. Mr. J. B. Roberta, the eminent tragedian has arrived in this city, after something over ® year's absence in Eng- land, where be played gnocessfully in all the principal towne. Mr. Roberts was the rectpient of « very sompil- mentary letter from Mr. B. T. Smith, the manager of Dru- ry Lane theatre.
