Thero is always cause to be found for self congra- tulatien, for had we have been hot cross buns, salt fish, parsnips, or any of the concomitant parts of egg sauce, long ere this hour of the day we should have been in a state of transition, and, according to the Pythagorean doctrines, en route to become some- thing or somebody else. We have had curious weather these past days—more rain than sun, and more damp than either. Notwithstanding the in- sane predictions to the contrary, we are not to have @ row with France; in fact, you will read of our hav- ing exchanged civilities at the cannon’s mouth, Queen Victoria has presented Louis Napoleon and beautiful Eugenie with a modei cannon; and Louis Napoleon and beautiful Eugenie intend, it is said, to return the compliment by a French model cannon. A very proper game at cannonade. The two infa- mous appointments made by the late government, at the request of the Knave of Spades—we should say Clanricarde—have not been confirmed, so that the Portugal Jew marquis and the British Jew bum bailiff are disengaged, if you can find any use fo them. We have just passed an hour with the em nent Queen's Counsel, Mr. Edwin James, who is— with his two juniors—over his head and ears wit briefs in re Dr. Bernard, Truelove and Stanislaus Tchorrewstie. The former, as you are aware, is in- dicted for conspiracy, and will be tried at the com- ing sessions of the Old Bailey. By writs of certio- rari the two latter causes will be tried at the Court of Queen's Beuch. Rudio is or will shortly be here to igre evidence it the doctor. “The Man in the Streets,” of the Morning Star, is evidently dis- inclined to let him go back sane, being assured of his guilt in the Waterioo Bridge mutiiation case. It is supposed that Dr. Bern rd. will be found guilty, and that the publishers will be acquitted. Mr. Edwin James is especially and auriferously retained for the defence in each case. The Prince of Wales was confirmed yesterday morning at Windsor, an event which been apxiously looked forward to, particularly by the tradespeople of the West End, as it is expected that he will soon take up his residence at borough House and keep a separate royal establishment. Perhaps the country may not have the same cause for congratulation when a government grant is arked for and voted of £40,000 a year. However, he has been a very good boy,and if he will but go on improvingly and follow ‘in the honorable steps of-his royal mother, we shall have no cause to com- plain. On the fifth of March, 1856, the new Italjan Opera, Covent Garden, was re-built, after the destruction of # former one, erected more than a century previous by the famous Rich, of “ Beggar's Opera” celebrity, was uphappily destroyed by fire at the close of a bal ; and now, after a lengthened period of litigation, which has prevented earlier movements, we find an entirely new and most splendid editice rising with fairy like rapidity trom ite foundations, | and promised to be open to the public in the middle of May, little more menccment. Your correspondent has, by the kindness and — under the escort of the well known, talented and most indefatigable treasurer, M. Poteaux, been ena- bled to make a thorough examination of the building, and been permitted also to inspect the plans and drawings of the different parts, interior as well a exterior, 80 that ] may venture to give some deserip- tion of what is and is to be, for the satisfaction of your transatlantic readers. ‘The intended theatre is perfectly new, the ruins of the old one having been cleared away to their very foundations; and to the untutored eye the immense walls of brick and mortar, rising to the height of nearly a hundred feet above the street, present little more than a chaos of hercge 3 materials, that might almost vie in magnitude with the pyramids of the Pharoahs. Enough, however, may be discerned, after the first explanations have been given, to enable one to form some germ conception of the design, though even at this late period all presents such an appearance of dust, bustle and confusion that, were we not assured that all the carpentry work, upholstery, interior fittings, scenery and stage decorations, were in a forward state of preparation elsewhere, any prospect of the theatre being com- plete and ready for an audience in six brief weeks would purely fabulous. Mr. Gye, however, has ere — B epar cee var to some purpose caterin, for tl = ;. and when we recollect the all insuperable difficulties that he has already surmount- ed, and that he has the invalaable aid of Sir Charles Barry as an architect, and the enterprising Mesers. Lucas as contractors for the building, we entertain little doubt that all will be ready for the opening day; and our only hope is that ablic wil, by their liberal patronage, auly reward noble, so mighty an eg ‘The edifice, which, unlike its predecessor, stands cast and west—that is with the stage in the latter direction—is about 240 feet in external length, be- ing about 122 teet broad between the external walls, and just 100 feet bigh from the floor of the pit to the roof outside. These external measurements, how- ever, give no idea of the space of the interior: for the entrance hall, passages, staircases and corridors, all my oped by substantial brick wally from the main ly of the house, necessarily occupy much space, so that the internal dimensions are 50 feet in height from the centre of the domelike ceiling to the lowest part of the pit flooring, the breadth at the proscenium being 64 feet, and the length from the front of the stage to the back of the centre box 75 feet. In short, aa regards altitude, it will be almost thirty feet higher than that recently burned down, and twenty-five higher than that of her Majesty's in the Haymarket; being thus, except in width of stage, as large as La Scala, the celebrated theatre at ‘Miian. Ample amends, however, will be made by the depth of stage, which extends 150 feet from the orchestra to the back walls, thus giving “ample room and verge enough” for the gorgeous pageants and processions required in our grander operas. Unlike almost all other opera houses, he wever, the new salle of Covent Garden will be of semicircular shape, ending in straight lines towards the stage, and not of the re-curved horse shoe form, which un- »idably precludes several boxes on either side from a fair wew of the performance. In another par- ticnlar, again, the new theatre will be distinguished: for, instead of there being some half dozen tiers of inconveniently «mall boxes, or rather pigeon holes, bere will be three noble tiers only of spacious boxes, nine feet high, and with ample room for the accom- modation of the occupants, who hitherto have certain- ly had ample ground of complaint in this matter. The en tier is to comprise ps mynd boxes, averag- abont twelve feet in ; and there will be about ninety more, including the smaller boxes, on a level with the theatre jast above the three Eee tiers. It may be estimated, therefore, hat the boxes will comfortably about 1,200 persons, which assuredly are as ascan gain a View ofthe sage and hear properly vocal efforts of the artistes thereon. We may add, that the Queen's box is to be on the right of the house and to have handsome retiring rooms, with a separste entrance and staircase in Hart street, on the sa s¢ principle as in the tate building ed by Albano. As regards the pit, about three-fifths of it will be laid ont in stalls, with ample room for passing to and fro withoat inconvenience; and as there are to be eleven rows of ratheranore than two feet each in breadth, these will accommodate about three han- dred persons; added to which there are to be ten rows of open pit seets behind, calculsted to hold abont four hundred more; so that ihe entire pit, with its passages, will not contain above eight bun- dred spectators. It will be seen, therefore, that the enterprising Mr. Gye, heavy as his stake is in the suecesa of the concern, is reagived that no consider- ation of gain shall interfere with a just regard for the personal comfort of those who give bim their patronage. The same remarks will apply to the amphitheatre above the boxes, which is to be sepa- rated into cious stalla, all enjoying a perfect view both of the stage and house. Above and be hind thie again, is to be a dee) gallery with twelve rows of seats, all commanding a good view. The two together are to accommodate six hundred per- sons; and thus the entire house, magnificent as It is to be, will net during the regular opera se 9 ac commodate more than 2,600 spectators, or about a4 many as her Majesty's, in the Haymarket ; bat then the elegance, comfort, the wing room ease which is to attend the new ment will make a visit to the opera a very diffrent affair altogether to what it has been hitherto. It should be added moreover, that a saloon or crnsh-room of noble di- mensions is to be constructed, eighty feet long b; thirty broad, with corresponding height, that wil communicate by corridors and staircases with all the boxes; besides which there will be access for cisertentry Conguoes tthe theatre, and’ itend conservatory con' to re,and inten ed to ema new portion of Covent Garden Market. On no acore, then, is any room le't for complaint as regards the ampleness of accommodation provided; for when all that is planned —— n realized, there Will be liberality even to profusion. J Buch isa eral view of the house and its pros- As regards the appearance of fie interior can be no doubt that it will be most splendid. The dome-sha) roof, with gilded trellimed ings entiation, supported appa- rently by four magnificent pilasters, dividing tho wn six months from its com- | but) ir. Gye for so | EW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, APRIL 25, ~ boxes into three separate sections —a front and tro sides—the dead white and richly burnished gol! in front of the Boxes, with statues, bia. decorations reliefs, trescoes, Xe , all in pertect harmony with the | general design, will produce unquestionably a most oapend effect, which will be further hei ened by 1@ TOKE C hangings and upholste: charac- terizes the boxes theverbeat, — aot however, all such matters are merely speculative. It is of more importance that strength of material, security from fire, and perfect facility for rapid egress should be provided; and there is no deficiency in any of these respects. The main walls des! to support the roof are constructed on tae cellular principle; that ix, one within another, united by eroas walls at short intervals, running all the way up; s0 that all the inner and outer be not more than five feet thick, they, by this arrangement, have a strength equal to twenty-four feet, and amply sufficient to bear a far heavier weight of roof than what it is here intended to support—consisting of nine girders, each weigh- ing eighteen tons and ninety feet in length, so as, without any other aid, to pts the entire cove! of the fabric. To see these girders dangting in mi air is of itself painfully interesting, but admiration for the mind t planned them, and confidence in their security guaranteed by his skill, are unavoid- ably the sentiments of those who have once seen them placed in position and beginning to assume the all important duties they are destined to perferm. There can be little danger, therefore, with walls #0 substantial, and a roof, which though not itself, sla- ting, ventilators, &c., as well, weighs little more than 250 tons, and yet is able to bear a strain of 3,000. It will be remembered, however, that there are to be workshops and storerooms supported by these girders above the artificial ceiling of the sadle, but assuredly there is ample provision for every possible contingency. The walls, again, are fireprooi through- out, and provisions made for isolating fire, whero it oceurs, by total separation from the rest of ihe building; the staircases are to be most solid and ca- pacious, to allow easy egreas without any possibility of accident; and, in short, every plan and appliance that constructive skill can suggest is to be brought into play, in order to make the new Opera House perfect sui generis, rising from its ashes like the phoenix of antiquity, but with a splendor never paralleled betore in this country. The above very brief and necessarily’ imperfect description of an edifice as yet ouly in embryo will, at all events, show that Mr. Gye and his able coad- jutors (to whom be al! honor due) have left no stone unturned, no energy untried, in rearing a temple worthy of the Muses, to whom it is dedicated. What has been already done in this country for the ad- vancement of musical science it would be tedious to relate; but when we call to mind the fact that the Italian Opera, as such, hud no existence prior to the time of Addison, Swift and Pope, who unaparingly ridiculed it for its absurdities, and that it has now assumed an ropes im co and attained a degree of perfection matched only in a few conti- nental theatres, there is ample reason for believing that the English are a really and increasingly musi- cal nation. Two geverations back could boast of a Banti, Angrisani,a Billington, a Cutalani, an Am- brogetti and others; those of us who ure beyond life's meridian can speak with rapture of Pasta, Ma- libran, Ronzi de Begnis, Rubini, Donzelli and the elder Lablache; but the past glories even of these have been eclipsed by the triumphs of Guilia Crisi, Madame Lind, Piccolomini, and, if last moeationed, not least, the amiable and wondrously talented Per siani, whose dulcet tones and high wrought expres: sions of feeling would kindle life almost beneath the ribs of death and wrap even an anchorite into lysium. When these, and others like them, including Mario, ‘Tamburini, Tamberlik, Formes and the younger La- blache, cum multi sa/tis, are constantly before the public; guiding their tuste and winning their ap- pees, and that, too, not of the exclusive classes, ut of the nation at large, and when musical art of the highest class, such as the instrumental concerted compositions of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, es: peciwly the last, until lately so little appreciated, we have a right to maintain that the English are an appreciative fae od displaying more and more that taste for what is termed high musical art, that was formerly considered the exclusive possession of the Italians and Germans. To provide a worthy temple, therefore, for the cultivation of it in his highest sense and by its most accomplished professors, is a merit of no ordinary character. Great risk aud re- sponsibility has been incurred, and a vast capital sunk in ereating this noble fane. It is sincerely to he hoped, therefore, that a success the most tri- umphant will crown the labors of the proprietors and directors of the intended new opera in Covent arden. As if Mr. Lumley would not be a step behind his indefatigable opponent, Mr. Gye, we have al ready been favored with the list of artists he has engaged for his opening immediately after Easter.
