Aunawr, April 14, 1858. The Broadway Railroad bili was up in the Seuate this morning, and @ very animated dobate occurred. The uly Senator who advocated the destruction of Mercer street, Church street, upper Broadway and the other streets was Mr. Noaon. He plead the interest of the oon- spirators with his usual ability, and, among othor state ments, he said the only opposition to the road camo from fourteen old fogies whe are property owners along the route. He also atated that the respectable press in New York was unanimously in favor of the road, viz: the Courier, Tritune and Times, Mr. Ely sald several other papers were opposed to the Broadway Railrcad. Mr. Noxcn—The Hxxatp, I suppose. Mr. Ely—Yes, eir, the Henan, Commercial and the Ezpress. There are no petitions from any persons living on the line of the contemplated route. With the exception of a hotel keeper, all the other names as corporators in the billare mere ghosts. The road is contemplated to occupy over ove mile and « half of upper Broadway, and the remonstrants on that strectand the others declare that the road would materially injure their Property. Mr. Truman said no railrcad could run through @ olty without injuring real estate. Ifthero were “oid fogics’’ jutcreeted, he was for protecting their private rizhts. He Was opposed to givo possession of the streets of the city of New York into the hands of a few persons, and would ‘Rot consent to vote for the bili. ‘Mr. Halstoad romarked that the potitioners for this rail- road were all from the castern portion of the city, even as far as Clinion atrect from the route. If the people of New York desire the PAsaage of any bill they wul come up bere by thousands, not by a simple dozen, The natives of the city shoulda have the benefit of the otty franchise. The State has no power to authorize the taking of those streets for QLy private purpose, because the property in them cither belongs to individuais or is vested ia tac corporation. Taey are held by the corporation as trustees for highway pur poses, and uoless that power grants the privilege of lay- ing down rails the Legislature bas no right to in Mr. Waasworth op) this ill last yoar, a oppote it now. Ifsuch bo the case the city should bave the benefit of such bonus, aud the francaise should be disposed of at public auction. He would bavo the poopie and their immediate representatives in the full enjcyment of their corporate rights.
