Arrtval of the Steam Frigate Sucquehannea— The Uuited Btatee steam frigate Susquehanna, Captam Jouhua R. Randa, arrived at this port last eveoing from Nicaragua via Port Royal, Jam., where six officers and fifty-eeven men were landed, sick with yellow fever. She ‘has bad 165 cases in all, and eeventeen deaths are known. Sbe is now detained at Quarantine, The following narrative of the cruise of the Susquehaana, and the origin and pi of the fearful epidemic oa board, will be read with interest;-— TO THE EDITOR O¥ THE NEW YORK HERALD. Usrrep States FRIGATE SUSQUEHANNA, The arrival of the Rilke ye i og tates frigate Sasque- hanna in tho port of New York with the yellow fever oa board, which has disabled half of her crew, you have doubtless heard of. 1 feel certain, however, that a brief sccount will be acceptable, Besides, I wi-h to call the at- tention of the public to the humane conduct of several noble-hearted English naval officers who were tastro- mental in saving the lives of many on board this ship. The Susquehanna had been ordered from the Medi- terrancan six months age to Greytown, Central America, in cansequence of Walker's movement in that quarter. She arrived too late to take a part in the expedition that led to his omptare, but her orders obliged her to remain in thet harbor—a place subjest to influences of a deadly character in the way of miasma, Produced by lagoons of fresh water, many of them stagnant. This, with the brackish water of the anchorage, enfeebled the health of the officers and crew w such an extent as to pre- pare them for any epidemic. It first showed itself by causing fits of vomiting. Alas, thts was the forerunner of yellow fever, which made its appearance about the 19th of March—threo of the crew having died suddenty within @ day of each other, and one from biack vomit. The ship was then taken outside to sea, m hopes that a change of climate would prove beneficial, and |t seemed to have that effect for a few days, we only losing one man, though cages of fever atiil occurred, After cruising « few days the ship anchorod outside of the harbor, some three miles from Greytown, waiting for the arrival of the Jamestown, that bad been ordered some time before to this place. As the fever broke out on the 80th ult. with renewed violence, it was deomed best to get under way, and on the night of the Ist it raged violently, and some four off. cers and upwards of forty men were on the sick let A consultation was then beld by the Captain, Surgeon and officers of the deck, and it was decided to run for Pensa- cola, being the nearest hospitel in the United States where the sick could be landed and the ship broken out. The vessel was thin headed tothe north—fever still om the increaseo—and, to make it worse, it wae found on the 3d that the coals were running short, and there would not be sufficient to carry as to Pensacola. The medicines also were short, besides the want ef proper nourishment for the sick. These circumstances induced the Captain to make for Port Royal, Jamsica—then withim four hundred miles, The speed was increased to nine aad ten knots, for now it bad become a question of life and deat with every one on board. The 4th of April poor Lieutenant peg W. Queen, of the marine corps, died, after an 1)insee of five days, which terminated in the black vomit.
