The thrilling story of “Jessie Brown at the relief of Lucknow” bas been published and re-publiahed mm the newspapers, dramatived and re-dramatined at the thea- tree, amd repeated at the fireside as an incident in real life, unparalleled im history and unequalled even in the moet celebrated tales of fiction. It may, however, bes maiter of come surprise, that notwithstanding the general creéence with which the story bas been received, it is not noticed in any of the official accounts, aud bears a striking resemblance in its tenor to an incident in ‘The Be- throtbed,”’ one of Scott's tales of the Crusaders. Ofcourse, like all skilful plagairiste, the author of this story, if be ‘was a plagairist, knew enovgh not to steal the verbiage— and, indeed, the circumstances forbade it—as in the one mstance the expected relief was the Norman warriors of Constable De Lacy and in the other the Scowh High- landers. “ The old Norman warrior, Sir Raymond Berenger, who, for etimes beaten, sometimes victorious, but never sud- dued, had in spite of Gwenwyn’s hottest incursions, main- tained bis castle of Garde Dojoureuse upon the marches of Wales, a place strong by nature and well fortified by art, which the We'ch Prince had found it impossible to corgzer.’” But Raymond of Berenger had, by moans of a rash vow, been induced to contend on the open plain in front of his castle with a force far superior in numbers, and had been vanquished. Relief was momentarily ex- pected, while at the same time the Welch were looked for every instant, to endeavor to storm the castle, Eveline, the daughter of Berenger, attended by the daughter ofthe good Fieming, who had been entrusted with the charge of the castle, unable to sleep from the intense anxiety, deter- mired to wi upon the battlements while those in com mand slumbered from fatigue, The following is the des- cription of the recognition by Eveline of approaching sounds. Tho intelligent reader cannot but perceive a similarity between the general idea of this incident, and that of the alleged story of ‘ Jessie Brown of Lucknow.’” Perhaps, if either has the preference in thriliing interest, itis the fiction and not the so-called fact. We give the two in parallel columns:— THRILLING INCIDENTIN THY RR. THRILLING INCIDENT IX TUE IJK OF THE RESIDENCY OF RELIEF OF TI CASTLE OF LUCKNOW. At Danielson- ville the mille of the Danielson Company commensed operations two weeks since ; the large mill of the Quine- ‘aug Company started a little earlier. In the east part of the same town, where on asmall stream there were afew days since half a dozen inoperative mills in the space of a mile, a week hemce will show the same number in full Operation. The large cotton mill of E. S Young, at Caest- nut Hill, Fast Killingly, started on Wednesday.
