Away, March 10, 1858. A rerolution was adopied in the Seuate this morning, Cirecting the Commissioners of Record of the city of Now ‘York to report within teo deys the amount of money drawn from tbe county treasury of New York for services rendered oader the act of 1855; also what work bas been done, the prices paid for the same, the number of clorks ‘employed, what amount of work remains to be done. Sogether wita an estimate of what furthor amounts will be Fequired to complote the same. The law appointed Wil- iam C. Wetmore uné Richard Busteed, cemocrats, and Jonathan Nathan and Charles P, Nelson such commission- “ers, withous any sulery or pay whatever from public Funds. It fs intimated that rome sixty thousand dollars ‘has been paid for making up the record during the last ‘throo years, and the work but half accomplished; there- fore tho Hon, Mr. Laflin, living in Herkimor county, de- nires to bave # bill of particulars placed before him, It Qbere is to be an investigation into this raaiter, perhsps tbe printing frm of McSpodon and Baker may be callod ‘~wpon to whether they have lived up to their contrag swith the then Legislative lobby in regard to the distribu ion of printing profits, ‘At this late period of the session wo have at longth @ bitt Mntroduced re-imporing railroad tolls on winter railroad Yreylt. As there is aothing Wn the Kill ellowing an increase of pasacnger fare as a recompense for paying tolls, the indications are Qbat the proposition to impose tolls, without some such conzideration, will meet with decided opposition in both houves. Quotations for stocks took anotiwr downward turn this morning. At the first board there were free operations, and the bulk of the business was for cash, Buyers on time were plenty, and took hold with considerable spirit. Galena and Chicago advanced ¢ per ceat. In New York Central the operations were unusually heavy. It opened at 90 and left off at 89 per cent, cash. Erie was 4 little better at the close. The first sales were at 29 a 204, and the jast at 30. 4g. Harlem shows no change rince yev'orday. There was an active business, and the stock closed firm. The improvement in Pa- cific Steamship Company, caused by the withdrawal of the opposition line of steamers, was partially lost to-day. The stock was not pressed for sale, and closed at 70 per cent, cash. Chicago and Rock Island wa» about as wel) sustained as any stock on the list, and will withdwt@oubt recover itself as rapidly as any other, After touching 83 cash, it left offat 834 per ent, seller ten days. Reading was a fraction better atthe close, with large cash transactions. Michigan Southern, common and preferred, were about simi- lurly affected. The prefered was oniy sold in amail lots, and principally for cash. The common stock was plenty and left off heavy. Panama was dull and slightly depressed. Only one small lot was sold. It left off pretty steady at 106 per cent. Cleveland and Toiedo tas fallen largely since the close of last week. At that time it was one of the most inflated stocks on the dist, and sold freely at the advance. It left of weak this morning at the decline. The only stock on the list to-day in which there was any im- provement is Galena and Chicago. That opened at #24 vath, and closed at 933, buyer 60 days. It advanced steadily from the opening to the close, and the pur- chases were larger than we have reported for some days. Galena and Chicago and Chicago and Rock Inland are about the same class of stocks, and are by all odds the two best in the Western country. ‘They are managed by men of long practical experi- ence in railrosd matters, and great reforms bave recently been introduced in the operating depart- ments of each company. They are both actually earning more money on reduced recgipts than at thir timo last year. State stocks and railroad bonds were not at gh actize today. There was no particular charge in prices. Holders are principally large capitalists, and look upon them as the best perma- nent investments in the market. We look for avery active European demand for our State stocks—a de- mand that will put prices considerably above current rates. It would take an advance of some importance to bring out Any quantity of our most substantial | State securities. - At the second board the market experienced a further decline, with rather an active business for the afternoon session. Pacific Steamship Company | fell off { per cent; Reading, 2; Michigan Central, 14; Erie, 14: Michigan Southern, old, 1; do. prefer- red, 2; Vanama, 4; Galena and Chicago, 1; Cleve- land and Toledo, 1; Chicago and Rock Island, 1. New York Central Railroad advanced 4 per cout on the lowest price of the morning, and Fladson River Railroad 2 on the lowest price current at the first board. Canton Company was well sustained. , Cum- berlond advanced 1j percent. There were large operations in Erie and Michigan Southern stocks at | the decline. After the board there was an active demand for New York Central, and 904 was bid. Erie was better, and closed firm at 29} bid. The market generally left off steady, with an upward | tendency in some of the leading speculative stocks. The steamship Canada, at Halifax, brings us seven | days later news from all parts of Europe. The most important item of intelligence is the resignation of the Palmerston Ministry. The return of the Derby | party to power is considered a very favora- ble movement for the interests of United States, and one calculated to strengthen the peaceful relations of all the civilized nations of the world. Quotations for consols were very well sus tained. Any political change of this character is calculated to aflect for the moment public secaritie: and the fact that a decline of only 3 a | per cent was realized shows how strong public confidence exists throughout Great Britain. The complexion of finan cial affairs generally on the other side is favorable. The activity in cotton and advance in prices is the best kind of news for all our local interests. As a whole, the political, financial and commercial advices by this steamer could hardly be better. The iinpression among houses in the street, having a large foreign commission business, is that extensive orders have come out by the Canada for certain descriptions of railroad stocks, railroad bonds and State stocks. The orders for purchasing received by the Canada will be limited, if limited at all, at prices considera- bly above those received by the Earopa, as later advices from our market had been received in Lon- don, showing a steady advance in all our securities. The Governor is decidedly adverse to the measure.
