C., THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 1858. Even VOL. XI. Star. NO. 1,603. THE GREAT «“ REVIVALS” OF i855. The following “revival” incidents we take from New York papers : [From the Express. The secular, as well as the religious journals, give large attention to the religious feeling in the city, which seems in a greater or less de- gree to have reached all denominations. The awakening has continued for several weeks and the sphere of its influence is becoming wider every day. The det: of daily move- ments and meetings in this great city would fill the columns of a daily journal. fhe nu- merous prayer meetings are all crowded. The experience of a sailor was thus related at Plymouth Church : When I went to sea I left behind me one of the best mothers that ever lived. She was a pious woman, and used to pray for me. She used to pray for me before I went away from home, and after I had gone she prayed more than ever. Her prayer always was that I might become « Christian. In my beak youth, before 1 went away from my father’s house, 1 was a scholar in a Sunday-school where I learned many lessons that [ shall never forget. When I was at sea, off St. Vincent, a great storm arose. It was a tremendous gale, and many vessels were wrecked. There seemed to be no possibili y that the ship could hold out against it, and we gave up hope. There was bot # single person on board that wasa Christian —none to whom I could go to seek counsel in view of preparing for eternity. I sat aione, by myself, thinking what I could do. I was afraid to meet death, for I was unpre- pared to die. All lessons that I had Jearned in the Sabbath-school came up before my mind. It seemed as if all that I fad ever heard, or read, or known, flashed before me, and ap- — as if it had all happened but yesterda thought of my religious iustruction; I thought of my mother’s prayers ; [ thought of the Bible ; 1 thought of God; [ saw my mother’s tears; 1 -letermined to pray, and [did pray. I made 4 vow before God, that if he would spare me, and suffer me to get ashore once more. [ would consecrate all the rest of my life to his service. He heard my prayer, and we were saved. Not one of the crew was lost, although the storm roved fatal fo many vessels. One of these, the ark Resolute, of New London, went down with all on board. Another lost eight men, and cawe near losing all, with the vessel itself. In a day or two afterward, we ran into St. Vineent, and were ashore sufe. The danger was over, and so was my resolution. I forgot, in a great measure, my solemn obligations to God. There was no house of worship in St. Vincent, but if there had been I doubt whether 1 would have gone into it. We are always apt to forget. when peril is past, the prayers we utter when itis upon us. A short time after- ward we were at St. Helena. Here there was ebureh, and when [ saw it I began to re- aa t what I had told God in the storm. It sn me with great seriousness. We did not remain long at the island, but I rea de- amined if possible to fulfill my promise. termined to seek and to find Christ. I began and to pray earnestly for my salva- ; and eed, rejoice with great joy, and tbank God with many thanks that he has ehown me the wey of life, and led my feet to walk init. The prayers of my good mother are now answered, fur | trust that [ am a child of God, redeemed by the blood of Christ. These words were uttered with some hesi- taney, oecasioned by great emotion, and were listemed to with great eagerness. Two other seamen related the circumstances of their conversion at sea. {From the Tribune } « Jessie's’ Goup Rixe.—In Mr. Beecher’s Church, Brookiyn, at the close of the morning service, Sunday, a collection was taken for the benefit of the poor in thecongregation. Among the audience was Mrs. Fremont(‘‘ Our Jeszie,”’) =sbo, happening to have no money in her pock- set, as the plate was passed, took from her fin- yer a heavy gold ring and threw it in, as the euly contribution which she was able at the moment to make. The ring contains on the outside an engraved “bee” (in allusion to a ieautiful incident in Col. Fremont’s passage of the Kocky Mountains.) and on the inside the suseription, “‘ March 4, °59."’ It will be sold for ¢ charitable purpose, and will, no doubt, bring 4 high price. Tar ‘ Fryise Artitcery’—More Anovt “AWFUL GARDNER.’’—Some months since the leading members of many of the Methodist eburches in the city, well Known for their ex- emplary piety, constituted themselves asociety with the object of promoting among the people an interestin religion. Their efforts have been attended with success beyond their most san- guine expectations. From its continually elanging field, it has been christened the ‘* Flying Artillery."’ Sunday the Artillery opened their batteries in the Norfolk street ethodist Church, the morning, afternoon and evening services being entirely in ex- hortation and prayer. Thechurch was crowded to its utiost—all the available space, either for sitting or standing, being occupied. The artil- Jery foree consisted of betweea 30 and 40— mustly of middle-aged persons, who took their places within the altar Among them was ex- Alderman Wesley Smith, whose conversion has been recently announced. Dir. Samuel Halstead, who led in the services of the afternoon, then read the requests of sev- eral persons asking (he prayers of the congre- gation for different relatives unconverted. A ssember of the band then offered prayer. Each prayer wus tollowed by a hymn, in which the whole cougregation joined After several prayers, brief exhortations were made, oue by ex-Councilman Purdy, in which he painted iu most glowing colors the joys of Christians upon earth. Mr..Purdy was fol- lowed by Mr. Halstead, who gave an account of the conversion of ** Awful’’ Gardner, at Port Chester. After alluding to the fact that Gardner's wife was @ Christian woman, and that he had at- tended upon the revival that was now pro- grossing. and was frequently importuned by pez and others to seek salvation and forsake tbe siwful life he bad been leading.—Mr. Hal- stead eovtinued the narrative as follows: A Christian who had been laboring with him said © Now, Mr. Gardner, don't you feel as if you ought to ehange your sourse ui life?” Said he, * Ido “ Then,’ he asked. “why don't you do sy‘ Well,” said Gardner, “I can’t begin now.” “Why not now?” “I have sume matters in New York to settle up first « Ab,” said the gentleman, * but you had bet- ter settle with your Maker first.’ Well,” said Gardner, “[ am gving to the city te-mor row morning. and when I return I will seek salvation.” Well, in the morning he had hs earpet bag ready to start, but said he, “ I guess J will wait uatil to-morrow morning,” and so he kept on putting it off until to-morrow for a week. Iam guing, by the grace of God, to change my course ; Yon going totry sod be a different man."’ Un Wednesday he came forward and knelt down, but he didn’t get converted then. He didn’t get converted tue nextday, andin the meantime the mem- bers hud begun to frown at the sinful men who bad kuown him, and who came and filled the allery, saying, ‘Let's see what's going on.”’ But be dide'e inch. He said to the minister, ‘“‘ What does this mean?” “ Ah,”’ said the minister, ‘‘ od means to give you such a struggle that you will never forget it.
