8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Wepwespay, Murch 3—¢ P. M. About the same activity continues in the stock market. The operations of insiders and outaiders 200 mppear to be carried on with a great deal of spirit, | 507 ¥ and holders are full of confidence in fature vakies, Phe tendency of prices was upward this morning, and an advance was realized on nearly every de- scription. The most important improvement this morning was in Chicago and Rock fsiand. This sock opened at 86} per cent, and closed at 87# per | ent, cash, and $8 per cent, buyer 15 days. Uailor- nia State sevens advanced { per cent, closing firu , et 852 percent, cash. It is not generally Known ‘hat the California bonds now on the market Lave ‘pearly nine per cent annual interest, which goes to the buyer. New bond» are to be issued on the Ist af January for all the bonds now afloat, with two | years interest added. At that time, for any ene thousand dollar old bond the holder wil! get eleven hundred and forty dollars iu new seven per j ent bonds. The six per cent bonds of several of eur old States, with large debts and heavy taxation, are selling from 90 to 100 per cent, while California Btate seven per cents, with a small debt and the most stringent restrictions against any increase, are | 200N Y selling at 85 a 854, including all arrears. We allude > bo these facta 60 that men of moderate meana may tarn their attention to this security before prices get beyond their reach. At the first board New York Central Railroad 6’s advanced $ per cent; Canton Company, }; Cumberland, }; New York Central, $; Hudson River Railroad, j; Harlem, 3; Michigan Gentral, {; Galena and Chicago, 1; Cleveland and | canton Oo...... 25% Toledo, 1; Chicago and Rock Island, 1}. Michigan pros Central bonds declined } per cent; Milwaukie and Mississippi 2d mortgage bonds, 1. Hudson River pe opened at 35}, and left off firm at 35}, cash, with ae: 6355 quite moderate sales. New York Central closed at a little advance on the opening, but Erie was heavy and closed weak. Throughout the whole of the present movement in the market buyers of stocks have exer- eised much more discrimination than usual under | $2,000 Brook ordinary circumstances. The greatest advance has ‘deen in the best securities, either as regards actual value or prospective ‘improvements. It is true that speculation has carried up a good many worthless ‘things, but to a much less extent than during pre- vious inflations. There is an advantage at all times in taking hold of good dividend paying stocks for a epeculative movement in an upward direction. In the first place, it would be better to hold them in the event of a temporary decline, and in the second place, any improvement in market value is not likely to be eaten up by interest, for dividends will at least = offset that item of cost. Where speculators take hold of the fancies, they have merely the shadow, and eannot fall back upon the substance. The high priced stocks are even now much the best, mach the safest, and mnch the surest to advance. Any ound security, giving six and seven per cent inte- rest, capitalists will by and by be glad to get at much higher prices than those now ruling. Maney must for a long time coutinue very cheap. Our rates must assimilate more closely with those of ®uropean money markets, and as our securities @raw high rates of interest they must command eomparatively Ligh 5 s. It will n become & question of most vit nee to what uses can we apply cur enormous accumulation of capital. This may seem extr wry in a conntry like this, where so many and such vast resources lie undeve- doped; but it is nevertheless true; and the inge- Buity of our shrewdest capitalists will be severely taxed to find ways for using money at anything like ‘She present legal standard. At the second board the market was buoyant and active. California State 7's advance 4 per cent; Canton Company, 3; New York Central Railroad, | ¢mbraced about 6,000 4; Michigan Central, 4; Cleveland and Toledo, }. ‘There appears to be a movement of some impor- tance in Canton Company. At both boards today the transactions were unusually large, at improving prices. New York Cantral and Hudson River Rail- read have evidently about as substantial a class of purchasers as any other stocks in the market. They appear to move together, with about equal strength. The future of these companies is destined to be more closely allied than is at present generally auticipat- ed. There were no sales of Panama this afternoon. The stock is held above the last qnotations, and very little is on the market. The move- mente of steamships connected with this road are calculated to cause the withdrawal of & good portion of the small quantity of | stock now offered. Chicago and Rock Island was about the firmest stock on the list today. The Mis- sinsippi and Missouri Railroad Company, extending from Rock Island directly across the State of Towa, has about completed its negotiation for the sale of a Jarge amount of bonds, which ensures an early com- pletion of that line. This is already an immense feeder to the Chicago and Rock Island road, and as it is extended towards the Missouri river must bring ® very great through traffic, After the board the market was better, and all the speculative stocks were in active demand. The closing prices show great «trength, and the probability is that a greater advance than has yet been realised is at hand. The Aseistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows: ‘Tetal receipts . . - so ‘Bou! payments. 416 60 Tota: balance - onset LS) The receipts ‘today include $46,000 from customs. The steamship Africa, from this port for Liverpool today, carried out $70,357 41 in specie. Sterling exchange bankers’ bills closed at 8] a 94 per cent premium. The steamship Moses Taylor, from this port for Aspinwall on the 5th inst., will take out about 400 passengers. The St. Louis, on Friday for the same | at Sie. a 8X. port, has nearly as many more; and the Northern Light, which leaves on the 10th inst., goes out, we believe, fall. The total number of passengers by these steamers will be about 1,500. This will throw & very large travel over the Panama Railroad, and largely swell the company’s receipts. The Grocers’ Fire Insurance Company has de- | choice at 7\¢. Ine elared a semiannual dividend of six per cent, pay- able on demand. The receiver of the Bowery Bank will pay a fecond dividend of forty per cent on the ascertained | gow arene. claims against that institution, at the banking house, | ** ‘=.
