Hoo. Azor B. Crane presided, the following gentlemen officiating as Vioo: Preeidents aad Secretaries: — Vice Presidenis—Lodowick Burdick, James J. Saalley, Bezekiab Couch, James Towner, Atozi J. Barnes, Saxtoa Smith, Thos. J. Brevoort, Morgaa Emign, Daniel Dykm sa, James H Boi ice. Secretaries—Jonathan H. Burdick, Addison J. Hopkiae. The principal epeaker was Mr. James D. Lrrrte, who spoke substantially as followe:—All have read with as- fonishment and regret the recorded vote of the represea- tative in Congress from this district, upon the first admin- istration measu'e presented to the consideration of the House. Instead ft standiag by the party and aiding she ‘executive in his laudable efforts to settle forever the Kan- sas imbroglio, by speedily admitting ner as a State under ‘the conatitution presented by her chosen delegates, waica b aaripr gb peace to the country snd transfer the se;- tof her partizan dissension and the formation of her local institutions to her own people, we find him vot ing side by side with those who desire to embarrass the administration, dest the energy and usefulness of the democratic party, rpetuate the unfortanate discord which has cursed that Territory since its Organizition, and , which will continue to distract and divide its inhabitaats go long as designing politicians can kindle the torch of agitation a: Sas which will be uptil such time as is mitted to take her pe am the sisterhool of sovereign States. . Haskin ever been regarded as one of the most ‘unflinching national democrats in the 3tate. As gach he was nominated, andas such he received a warm and cor- dial eupport from the democratic electors of this Con- P enpengeraay ey It was expected here and elsewhere he would be the last to falter in the fight—the last to back water upon the administration—the last to add fuel to the fires of fanaticiem which the foes of the democratic party and the enemies of the country are seeking to kin- dle inthe federal capital. In this honestand well founded expectation his constituents have been disappointed— most egregiously disappointed—at a time, too, when the aid of every democratic member of Congress“was needed to lift up and strengthen the hands of the President of our ehoice. As the immediate constitvents of Mr. Haskin we aseemble here, not to deny his right to vote in obadience to the dictates of bis own conscience, whether agreeable to us or not, but to piace ourselves right upon record, and to renew our confidence in the patriotism, abibty and integrity ot James Buchanan—and especially te attest our earnest concurrence in the line of policy so powerfully indicated in his special message accompanying ‘the Lecompton constitution. It was a fair, honest. practi- cable suggestion of a man nursed in the school of political economy, whore information, patriotism and foresight eminently fitted him wo advance the remedy for an evil which bas so long threatened to blot from history that highest of all pages dedicated to the birth, progress and developement of American liberty. ‘At the conclusion of the foregoing remarks the President was authorized to appoint a committee to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. The chair ap- pointed Hon. Thos, P. St. John, Francis Burdick and Eve- rett Hopkins, Esq., as such committee, who, alter re.iring for deliberation, reported the following resolutions:— Resolved, That we have the utmost coniidence in the in- tegrity, patriotism and wisdom of James Buchanan, and that his administration, thus far, meets with oar unquaul- fied approval. That the doctrines communicated in his several messages transmitted to Congress, and more par- ticularly the views embodied in the special message ac- companying the presentation of the be age constitu. tion; that the whole line of policy pursu@ py the execu. tive, including the appointments made in his official capa- city, meet with a hearty response from and will be warmly supported by the democracy of Putnam county. Resolved, That we exceedingly regret that the Hon. John B. Haskin, our representative in Congress, with ne knowledge that the republican party was etriv.ng to post- pone the admission of Kansas asa State, so aa to eaadle them to make political capital out of the unfortanate ditl- culties in that Territory, deemed it his duty to vote with ‘the opponents of the adrhinistration in favor of the reso- Jution referring the President's epecial mossage to a com. mittee with power to investigate, the object of which reso- fution was evidently to delay; still, we trust that he will regain the confidence of the democracy of this distrtct, by advocating the speedy admission of Kansas under the Lecowpton constitution, whenever a bill for such a pur- pose shall be presented during the present Cougress. The meeting was also adresse! by Hon. B. Baily, who ‘also strongly ceneured the course pursued by Mr. Haskin, ‘ae calculated to produce the worsi form of suction alagita- ton. After the adoption of a resolution calliag another meet- ing for the same purpose, the meeting adjourned, Our Key West Correspondence, Key Wasr, Feb. 6, 1858. ‘The Filibusters at Key West—Decision of Judge Marvin The United States Steam Frigate Wabash, dc., de. We our last despatch, per steamer Isabel, we forwarded the testimony taken by the District Court of the United Staues in the case of Commodore Paulding against Col. Fraak Anderson and bis associates, The Judge's decree was not given in time to send by that mail, and we now present it. The testimony being ended, the Judge said “it admitted of some doubt whether a military expedition might not be begun and set on foot, and the means pre- pared and provided, in violation of the sixth section of the act of 1818, on board an American vessel, on the high peas —‘If any person shall, within the territory or juris- diction of the United States, begin, or set on foot, or pro- vide, or prepare the means for any military expedition or enterprize, to be carried on from thence against the terri- ory, &c., of any State with whom the United States are a» peace, he shall be fined,’ &c. The term jurisdiction, used im the act, is a term of great flexibility of comprehension, ‘and might perhaps be construed to embrace an American ‘yease| and the persons on board, on the geas—but it was not necessary to decide this point. was sufl- cient testimony to show that the act of Congress was vio- Iated at New Orleans, and that the parties before ths court were :nvolved in the violation, and ought to be held to trial in the eastern district of Louisiana, where the offence ba yy ‘ble to give bail were committed by 0 ing noel ve bis Honor Judge Marvin to the custody of United States Marshal Moreno, to be conveyed to New Orleans for trial. They accordingly left on the 26th alt., in the United States nal fteamer Atlantic, and have doubtless ere this been brought defore the United States District Court of Louisiana. Thus ends the association of Col, Anderson and his party with the authorities of Key West. The United States frigate Wabash, Commodore Paulding, remained at the naval dock unUil'the 2d instant, whea she sailed at an carly hour for favana, While at tho wharf she received 460 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons of water, by which her draft of water was increased from 22g feet tw 24 feet, nearly. Unlike Downing algo, Cato never dabbled much in politics, or had troubles with any body, but stack to his business and made a fcrtune, Cato Alexancer was areeident of New York nearly all his life. In his early days he wae a slave, but obtained his freedom with others by the legislation of States. He was here in the days when Gen. Washington was in this city, and loved in his old age to tell over and over again the times that he had waited upon that great man, now he had helped him to mount or diemoant his horse, and many other things, which, done in connexion with illustrious persons, wouterfully increases the pride of a darkey. Cato seemed to have a pecu'iar gift for hotel keeping. His larder was of the best, and his liquore were the boast of connoisseurs. After many changes and experiences as a host of public inne, Cato took a piace out ‘on the road,’ opposite the shot tower. Although the locality is not now out of the city, in the days of Cato’s glory and prosperity it was a drive of several miles to his resort, Then there was but one public road fit for fast driving, and its terminus was Cato’s. Everybody went there. It was the rage and the fashion. His suppers were proverbial for excellence, and in eleighing times the fathers and mothers of the present eperation carried on many of their fl.rtations in the par- ior of thie then popular neg: Cato’s prosperity increased wi to have amassed a fortune. He afterwards became ‘nvolved, and his old house was sold. Cato was new almost too old to com mence life anew, but he etill made several unsneceseful attempts. His last effort was to open an oyster saloon in Broadway, near the Metropolitan Hotel. His familiar name, associated with so many recollections of the frolics ot the past, drew to his piace small share of custom. [From the Pitsburg Post, Feb. 15.) Quite an interesting case came to light on Saturday, the circumstances of wich, a8 far ae We can ascertain, we give below:— Some five years ago, a mulatto man, named George W. Farris, escaped from his master, a wealtny planter, by the name of Reigian, near Tuscumbia, Alabama, who was also the reputed father of Farrie. He a tue me- chanic, came to Pittsburg, married sad settled, Shortly aiter be came here he wae followed by @ man pained George Shaw, who used every possible means in his power to entice him into the South, but without success, until a year eince, when, by showing forged letters to Farris, be induced bim to go to St Lows, aud from there to a small town in that viewcity, called Brunswick, for the ostensible purpose of procuring work as a bricklayer. Here he was arrested by the United Stat wuthorities, and taken back to Alabama. lis wife rema, bere du ing his absence, and ‘s engaged at Mise Kimberley’s theatre in some minor capacity, with her ebild, a brigbt litile urchin, now three or four’ years of age. Adout a week since, Mre Farris received iotimations that shaw had returned from Missouri, and being aware of the part he had taken im the abduction of her hurhand, became alarmed Jes: be should endeavor to obiain possession of her child. On the 11th of February she received a letter from James A. Torrence, a constable in Alle gheny Cty, and fearing this was part of a plot for obtaining the child, she made iaformation againet Shaw acd Torrence for conspiracy. Another information was also entered against them fer an attempt to abduct and kidnap the child. Of ficers Moon and Patterson were despatche’ afver these men,and Torrence and Shaw were arrested. A man named Cassel, a property man at the theatre, was algo ar rested on suspicion of being a party to the affair. After a hearing before the Mayor, Torren discharged on bis own recognizance to appear as a witness on Tuesday morning, Cageel was held to bail for bis appearance, charged as an accessory in the felony, and Suaw, being | watchho’ ubbbie to obtain bail, was locked up in the until the examnation. ‘Shaw boasts that he has been in pursuit of Farris for five years, for which he 8 he has received one doilar and a quarter day, during all that time, and five huolred dollars w cash, When arrested be handed to bis wifea etbouk, Which he afterwards stated was filled with ‘gia and Alabama money, supposed to be the proceeds of thm nefarious transaction. It is stated that at one time be offered to @ woman in this city oae hundred dol- lars if she would decoy Farris to her house, where he could administer chloroform to bim, and him off, He also offered to Mr. John I and anotber man, bricklayers, fifty dollars, if they would decoy him off into Virginia, under pretence of working there. This same Shaw was arrested in July,1855, tor breaking into the house of Mrs. Gardiner, in the Ninth ward. When ar- rested, a bottle of chloroform and tome burgiars’ tools were found im hie possession, but by some mismanage- ment be was acquiited. So it seems that he has been fa- miliar with the use of chloroform. ‘Theatrical, Musical, Broapway TuxaTke.—Troops of juveniles will doubtiess flock to the Broadway this afternoon tosee the nove! spec- tacle of “Gulliver and the Lilliputians,’’ which will also be given with other entertainments at night.
