And after Spending tbree hours fu this kind of bushwhacking alter- -oation, an adjournment for the day was finally effected. Now, it matters very Little which of the contesting par- ties finally succeed—no important political point can be «schievod in the election of Speaker. Its finances are now in a better condir }- tion than though the company had extended itse! beyond its resources. As soon as the recent revul- sion appeared, the construction of the road was sus- pended, and the only loss was that of time, With the opening of spring, the company will resume operne tions and push forward its line. This road diverges from the La Crosse, four miles from Milwaukie, and will run north along the lake shore throngh Port Washington, Sheboygan and other large places, to Manitowoc, where it takes a northwest direction to Green Bay, a distance one bundred and twenty mies frem Milwaukie. A good part of the first section of eighteen miles of the line is graded. Most of ‘the iron ties, chairs and cars have been provided. But for the financial difficulties which have been realized byall classes during the past six months, this section would have been completed by the Ist of October, the appointed time. Fortunately this company was able to suspend operations without serious sacrifices, and at the earliest moment practicable construction will commence and go through without further in- terruption. We give at length in this issue the fall annual re- port of the Superintendent of the Banking Depart- ment of this State. It is a comprehensive statement of facta. The condition of the banks, the defects in the present system, and some suggestions {or future operations are fairly treated. It will be found an interesting State paper and will repay careful perusal. The Superintendent thinks that an increase in the specie basia of our benks is desirable, and that the total liabilities shall corres- posit of securities.
