Woiwithstanding the vigorous measures of General Cen- tbe for the suppression of the African slave trade, four large cargoes of negroes have been landed to the east- ward on the north sidefof Cuba, embracing over 2,000, and by some accounts over 2,400 subjects for christianiza~ tion and Cuban cultivation, within the short period of ton days. The vessels by which these expeditions have been conducted in safety to our shores were atl Eastern built, with the exception of one recently owned in the city of New York, and within the last six months a packet thence te this port, and visited by the United States Marshal for your district previous to leaving port the last time for Havana. The receipts of the week amount to nearly exght thousand dollars. It is fair to give the credit of this success chiefly to Mr. Formes, This artist came to us with @ first rate European reputation. When we say first rate we mean an artist who can command his own terms in the three great capitals—Paris, London and St. Petersburg. Mr. Formes has not disappointed the public. In point of fact, he is better than those who had not heard him before expected, for we have had so many bad German singers here that there was a preju- dice against the school, Mr. Formes, with his splendid voice and bis great artistic and histrionic qualifications, bas done more for German art than all the long-winded treatises of all the stupid pedants in the world. The rest of the cast is also very good, and the mise en scene tho best ever seen here. Tho season is now drawing to its close, which will be before the holidays, five mere performances being all that the director is required to give by the conditions of his lease. There will be but two more nights of ‘Robert”— to-night and Wednesday. On Thursday there will be an extra performance, for the benefit of the Hebrew Benevo- ent Society, and on Friday the “ Traviata’ will probably ‘ve given. On Saturday there will be the only performance of German Opera, Flotow’s “Martha,” which was written for Formes. This performance will be an exceedingly at- tractive one. The director has wisely resolved to sell a portion of the seats in the lower part of the house without the extra charge for securing them. We have alvays been opposed to the system of charging extra for secured seats. There appears to be no good reason why the pub- lic should pay the manager for securing to him so much cash in hand before he opens his doors. Mr. Charles Mathews concluded his second engagement at the Broadway theatre on Saturday evening. Ths house is closed for the present, in order to prepare for some grand hippo-dramatic spectacles, in which Van Amburgh’s troupe will appear. Mr. Mathews, we are happy to an- nounch, has made an engagement at Burton’s theatre, where he will shortly appear, . At Burton’s theatre the return of Mr. John Brougham: bas been a highly successful operation all around— houses full, manager satisfied, of course, and the public amused, also, of course. Mr. Brougham’s adapiation of “Vanitv Fair” was played throughout the week. Poole’s “Flamlet Travestie” was also produced, with Burton as the Ghost, Brougham as Hamlet, Mark Smith as Ophelia, and Miss J. Orton as Laertes, They were all good, and the laertes was especially a bit of clever burlesque acting. Mr. Rogers, @ fareeur from the Loucton theatres, has been added to the company bere. He i.e clever actor, after which is popular in Cockaigne. e | will find here an audience which can take a joke without having it forced into their heads. A word toan actor of Mr. Rogers undoubted merit wil! be quite suMcient, with- | out doubt. The bill at Burton’s this evening iacludes a new farce for Mr. Rogers, “‘Argels and Lucifer,” Mr. | Brougham’s extravaganza, “Tom and Jerry in New York,” and “The Siamese Twins,’ in which both Burton and Brougham appear. At Wallack’s theatre the week has not been distinguished by any particular novelty, Mr. Walcot and Mr. George Holland bave retired from the company; and Mr. Sloan, Mr. T. B. Johnston, Mr. Sothern and Mrs. Cooke have joined it. The Dill for this eveaing includes a new five act drama, “The Poor of New York,” written, according to the bills, to ‘‘illustrate the present condition of this city.” The subject is quite sufficient for one evening, and no other play will be performed. All the members of the com- pany are in the cast. At Nivlo’s Garden this evening the popular fairy spectacle “Medina” will be revived, with other entertainments equally interesting. Mr. Niblo will give hereafter on each Saturday afternoon an entertain- ment for the delectation of Young America. At Laura Keene’s theatre the “ Sea of Ice’” enters upon the sixth week of its prosperous run this evening. The play i6 as attractive as ever. The forthcoming novelty | at this house for the holidays is an English pantomime, a novelty which will be sure to draw. Atthe Museum the dramatic announcements for to-day and this evening include the “Cross of Gold,” “Jaugh and Grow Fat,” and several otuer popular pices. At the Bowery theatre Sands, Nathans & Co,’s circus company is doing a fine business. Several new features are announced for this evening, with the pantomime cuil- ed “Jocko.”” The Olympic theatre, 585 Broadway, opens this evening under the stage management of Mr. H. Jordan. Several popular actors are included in the company. The opening ‘Dill ie “All That Glitters is Not Gold,’ “Sketches | in India” and « “Kiss In The Dark.” Mme. During W. several persona were attacked and beaten, and the rest Mr. Gardner Clough, a conductor on th He was caught, while walk: ing in company with a friewt, by about fifty of the laborers, dragged to a bank about ten or twelve feet in height, and tho sides of which stopo down almost perpendicularly to the level of the ground and after being informed that he mast stand tris!, Grown down and pelted with stones hy the entire mob. ' He ran to the nearest public house, followed closely by the strikers, who continued the fusilade against him until he reached the door, which was closed to prevent his en- ce. The mob, however, did not continue the attack, er because they only intended to chase him to that house, or because they imagined that he had already re- ceived enongh at their hands; and after curses and ex pressions of exultation, in the form of cheering and yell- ing, they broke off' an acquaintance which was unceremo- nicus in its commencement and disagreeable while it continued. Wednesday night passed off withont anything more to make it remarkable than a repetition the turbulent spirit manifested on the night preceding it. The morning of Thursday was marked by the ordering out of the mill tary, who, with several volunteers, mustered between whiney ‘and forty bayonets, ‘and were teady for duty in the evening. At ten o'clock the same morning about sixty men arrived from Sufferns under the direction of Me. Cooper, one of the railroad officials, in order to make a beginuing, and, if ible, induce the other men to resume work. When oy arrived at the pier, and as they stepped out of cars by which ‘thoy were conveyed, & furious onslaught was made ‘upon them by a large division of the rioters, aud a desperate fight began. Cooper, their leader, drew a pistol and pointed it against the assailants, bat before his fin- ger bad time to touch the trigger he was struck in the mouth by a huge iece of brick, K staggered and obliged to take refuge in it, as most of the men whom he brought had already commenced to do. The battle was ended. A = of fugitives were now running as fast as possible efore their assailants, who sounded thoir horns to collect their companions, and did not give up the pursuit till the enemy obtained cover in a w ‘at the dietance of a mile trom where = janded. ‘Amiongst othor trophies, three prisoners fell into the hands of the vic- ors, who, after immersing then in the Hudson to wake ‘them feel comfortable, permitted them to continue their retreat. On the evening of Thursday nothing further oceurred worthy of notice, and although the demonstrations of the preceding days were continued the riotiog was virtually ended. Friday passed quietly, many of the men showing a disposition to Testime work, and on tho evening of that day a steamer arrived with 25 police from New York, and 100 laborers The latter were not landed, but sent back to the city next morning; and the police, after remaining on board the boat for 4 night, marched to the town unmolested, where they remained ll yesterday, when they came down iu the cars which conveyed our reporter. On Saturday all the men had resumed their business, and everything is now going on as if nothing unusual had occurred, Personal Intelligence. The Memphis Appeal of the 28th ult. says:—Gen, John A.
