Th stock market clowed yesterday steady, but thout much enimation, There is no outside ab- rption of stocks, and cannot be until aome actual provement takes place in financial affairs. The esent quiet is by NO means a desirable state of ing. The money market is gradually working sirr on first chiss seauritios; loans are freely offered seven por cent on call, on State securities; but banks are do.ny no*bing in the-way of discounts, The next weekly « tatement will, without doubt, like the last, chow an int,"e#ee in the specie reserve and in actual deposits, with J decrease in the line of Joans and in the amount of .'"tstanding notes, The activity in railroad stocks nofiy¢d early in the week was not maintained up to the closé, ANG she improye. went in prices, which gt one time bid frit to be of kore importance, reatiited in a very modétate ad- vance. The position of firigiicial matters is sudti that any inflation in prices is suve ¢ bring oul large lots of stock, and the market is by no mi¢ans | certifies! in a condition to bear moch more thud i has now to carry. We have before us several months of prostration and inactivity, and at the best reblic confidence will not return to railroad stocks for a long time beyond the recovery in other securi- ties, Some of onr railroad securities which have setnally torched bottom, like the Harlem, must, in the ordinary and natural conrse of things, improve. The Harlem is now in good hands, and if there isany value in it we shall see it gradually developed. The road is earning gross about one and a quarter mil- y,/ons of dollars per annum, and it only requires a ner income of say seven hundred thousand dollars | yvigorovely, to pay” the interest on debt and give a dividend on both the old and preferred stock. ‘Ihe company are, we understand, perfecting a- plan for funding the floating debt. Some of the Western railroad stocks which kave been unwarrantably depressed, must soon show sings of returning life, and rapigly make up for lost time» Those roads connected with the section of counffyy the agricultural resources of which have as yet nov been developed to even the most. moderate extent, will be the first to recover from the present depression. ‘The prospecta of returning activity in most de- partments of bnsiness are atill rather dull. The iron manofactnre and the cotton and woollen miTs—three of the largest departments of productive industry—~ Week: ending Oct. 29.. Am't. are still paralyzed, and all the capital invested in | Cotton, bales them at a stand-still, while thousands of the opera- tives who have obtained their means of living from | Wheat, bushels them are withont employment. Most of the smaller departments of industry are in a similar condition, and their workmen idle. The winter is approaching, and they must be fed. The country at large has abundent supplies of food, and this must, by some means, be brought to the consumers. Indeed, one of the singular features of the prevent crisis is that the harvests have been abundant. The Western States have never produced such a crop as is now shocked ip their barns, It is estimated thet Minois alone has one hundred and sixty million bushels of bread- stuffs, which, but for the disarrangement of the currency, would be moving forward to market; and Towa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio are full of wheat and corn. The ordinary means of transportation castword by the lakes and canals are practically at an end for the present season, and it is manifest that there is not now a supply sufficient for the demands of the East until spring. The railroads will be taxed to their foll extent to furnish transportation for it during the winter; and at present it would seem that they must derive a profit from it. The West is in a much more favorable condition now than ever before to get her crop to market in the winter season. The navigation of the Ohio and Mississippi is exceed- ingly good now, owing to the unusual rains, and the present state of the water indicates navigation from the month of the Ohio during the win- ter. The network of railroads through Minois and Indiana, leading to St. Lonis and Cairo at the mouth of the Ohio, will farnish facilities to ship breadstuffs from those States and Wisconsin, by the way of New Orleans, during all the winter months. The present prices in the markets of the Atlantic cities and ebroad wonld render shipments, even from Wiscon- ein, Towa and Northern Mlinois, highly remanera- bh Wheat in an can now be transported from Chicago to England by railroad to Cairo and thence by steamboat to New Orleans, and londed in Liverpool at less than $1 per bushel, and yield a profit of forty or fifty per cent. The Western railroads over which it must be transported hove focilities for its transnortation, Their fault —and it has heen a prievons one, for which they ave paying dearly in the depreciation of the selling valve of their stocks—has been incurring large and unmanageable floating debts, in some cases for eqviriments adeqrate to the wants of their business. ‘They bed no right to ron heedlewly in debt, even for | suronee Company ehowe that the net earned pre- minm: of the year ending the 4th of October were $1,808,659 47, from which deduct $1,007,344 94 losses, | $34,750 expenses, and $95,549 71 reinsurance, and there remains as net profits $165,714 7%. The Reading Railroad shows a decline to the present time of 364,914 tons, The Lehigh Val Jey Railroad and the Schuylkill Canal are ahead of their last year’s business, The enal production from the two regions is abont 20,909 tons less than to the seme time last year. The following comparative srmmory of the trade shows the bnsiness to the time of the last reporte:— this. ‘Their honest way was to call on their stock holders frankly for the means, and if they wold not afford it omit the exnenditnre. But the money hag been spent, and in some cases, notwithstand- ine the corporations are crinnled by it, it will enable them to aid the pnblie, and, in- eed. to earn something to pay debts. By some of the Western corporations the money has heen well and honestly expended for equipment, and in snch eaves the present depressed prices of their stocks in merket does net afford any ground of alarm. A road which is completed and in working order can bear adeht incurred for equipment adequate to the de- monde of its business. Tf ita equipment can not earn an income for it, it ix clear the road is valneleas, The present season will try the utmost capacity of all the rods leading to the navigable waters of the Missis- sinpi, and we have no doubt tend to relieve them from many of their embarrasments. The very un- fortrnate condition of the money market will in fact render them more immediately productive than if the crops had been able to reach the seaboard by the uenal water transporta ion. Capitalists look at this fact, and it isone of the few which affords a little encouragement. The November conpons on the first mortage bonds of the Harlem Railroad Company will be paid on presentation at the Treasurer's office, No. 33 Pine atreet. It is our impression that Mr. Moran's eloquence will be entirely thrown away upon the ehdurate hearts of the members of that distingviehed asscciation, and that it will be the waste of so much rew material upon eyes that will not see and ears that will not hear.
