NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25 1857. file, the band, and a portion of the officers’ quarters are situated. The rooms of the men—in each of which twenty-two are quartered—were exceedingly tion” and removed their hats. In this way every room was visited, including the library, where a goodly array of books and newspapers testified to the care bestowed upon the intellectual comforts of the garrison. Captain Jones assured the Governor that a large attendance of the men in the library was quite common, and tbat they were permitted to take some of the books to their quarters to read at leisure. Every room is under the supervision of a sergeant, who answered all the questions put to him regarding the cemforts of the men under his charge- ‘The kitchens and mess rooms of the soldiers receiv- od a careful scrutiny by the Secretary. He tooked into the soup boilers and examined the ovens. The quality of the soup, which was in course of preparation, was good and nutritious; and the bread was assweet, light, and fine as any one need wish to eat, and so Gov. Floyd pronounced it. A ration of pork—which, to jadge from its appetising odor, must be very pala- table—with plenty of vegetables, bread and bean soup, is eerved out to each man for dinner. Four times a week fresh beef is supplied in place of pork, The Secretary put severai questions to the cooks and bakers relative to the quality of the articles under their hands,.as well as minutely examining the same, and seemed quite satisfied that the men were well taken care of. ‘The Governor then paid a brief visit to the officers’ quarters, where he partook of a alight refreshment; and proceeded to inspect the armament of Fort Co- lumbus, a four bastioned field work, with ditch and counterecarp, and a covered way leading to the old fort called Castle Wiliam, the most conspicuous for tification on the island. Castle William, better known to our citizens as « The Fort,” standing on the corner of the island: facing the Battery, the ugliest looking structure, ex- ternally perhaps, in the world—from the wretched taste displayed in coloring it a dingy yellow—was built in 1807. It is, however,a strong defence, com. moanding the bay completely. It mounts 78 guns. On the lower tier the guns are 44 pounders; on the second tier 34 pounders; and on the top 24 pounders. The third tier is occupied now as soldiers’ quarters. Gov. Floyd, upon surveying the extent of water absolutely commanded by the guns of this fort, remarked that its value as a de fence was at once pbvious; but he thought that some improvements might be made in its construc- tion. Gen. Totten said that a much more effective fort could be constructed now for the same sum which Castle William cost at the time it was erected, and mectioned several improvements contemplated in the guns which were about to be mounted on the top of the fort. After inspecting this fortification the duties of the dey were concluded, when the Governor, and the large staff of officers who uccompanied him, pro ceeded to the quarters of the commandant, Major Cady. The day was exceedingly unpropitious, the rain falling heavily and continuously. In conse- quence of this, as well as the length of time oc2u- pied in inspecting the works on Governor's Island, the Secretary's visit to Bedloe’s Island was post- poned till to-morsow. All the arrangements, whether of the fortifications, the barracks, or the discipline on Governor's Island, seem complete, and réfiect much credit on the commandant and the officers under his command. The Secretary of War appeared to view the whole with much satisfaction Our reporter avails himself gladly of the oppor- tunity to express his full sense of the courtesy and kindness of the officers of the garrison, which were extended to him throughout the day. Bedloe’s Island and Fort Schuyler remain yet to be visited, when it is presumable Governor Floyd's labors in this city will be completed. Court of General Sesstons. Before Recorder Smith. OB BCNDROD AND TWENTY-FIVE INDIOTMENTS AGAINST BUNBAY LiQUOR SELLERS QUASITED. Oct. 24—When the Court was organized this morning a namber of prisoners were arraigned for ples, among whom was James Mc Alpine alias Lieu tenant Colonel Marmaduke Reeves, charged with obtaining money from the Accesory Transit Com- pany by false pretences in February last. He plead- ed not guilty, and was remanded for trial. James Rodgers, indicted yesterday by the Grand Jury for the murder of John Swanston in the Tenth avenue, was also placed at the bar and asked whether he was guilty or not guilty of the charge. Rodgers muttered out some words which were not beard distinctly at the reporter's table, He was un- derstood to say, “I don't kuow; I was drunk at the The Recorder requested.a member of the bar to take Rodgers aside and advise him of his legal rights. pment said that he supposed his friends would je counsel for him betore the day of trial. The Beare assigned George D. Keilog as his counsel, who entered a plea of “not guilty.” James Nugent pleaded gailty to stealing a boat, and wes sent to the penitentiary for six months. Richard Rikeman pleaded guilty to stealing two sails. Penitentiary three months. MOTION TO QUASH INDICTMENTS AGAINST SUNDAY LIQUOR SRL URRS. Theodore B. inson appeared as counsel for the Li Dealers’ Association, and moved to quash 125 indictments found by the present Grand Jury against liquor sellers for an alleged violation of the Sunday Liquor law. He said it was unnecessary for him to discuss the subject, as the tions in- volved were plain and obvious, and Judges Harris and Wright, of the Sapreme Court, coincided with his Honer's ious decision in the matt r. The Recorder irquired if the form ot the indict ment was the same as that upon which his previous decision had been rendered. The Assistant District A Yes, sir. He said thet Mr. Hall, the District Attorney, was com ops to leave town last evening, and requested him attend to the matter. He interred from the no- motion served upon him by Mr. Tomlinson, that it would be made on the same points as were resented on the we Ramet. is motion was in the discretion of the Court, and District Attorney wished iting a decision of the jioruri, the Recorder would lay over this motion anti] that decision was , first as a matter of expediency, and se condly as a matter of comity and respect to his brother Judge. Recorder Smith said that in the first charge he de- livered to the Grand Jury after the of the that under that law they had had derstanding the tho statute wo ge mh his duty to ex. the Recorder), and although it was not neces- ‘er htm to , =n the whole question on that was aware that the — ina different form, he conside to noe his views upon that section velative to selling liquor on The case was certioraried and was before the Sapreme Court of Since the decision, which he (the Recorder) made in that case, the ou precisely were and pi yer eminent Judges (Harris and fat), cond his decision, These indict ments having been found directly in the face of the directions given by the Recordér to the (rand Jury in regard to the law, he thongnt he wouldnot be dischargiog his duty if he hesitated at tne first op: = rel H 2 st eit could in Sessions. This right the statute guarantied and the Grand Jury had no right, to deprive it. He regretted that there wae any Dimrence opinion between him and his associate om thie eal ject; but he did not feel justified in holding 150 peo- ple for trial when the indictments were found against his express direction, and where the Su- preme Court sustained his views. Longman; Brown, Gieen et Longmans. This is a curious book, and ifde Lammenais were not dead might, with some color, be attributed to him. It is the realization upon paper of the politi- cal millenium of the Red Republicans—the full com- plement of the startling theories enunciated through the terse predictions of the Paroles d'un Croyant. The Alpine oracle not only foretells the utter subversion of all existing political systems, but announces an entirely new territorial di- vision of the earth under a nomenclature ready cut and dry. North America is to be -divided into four great provinces—Mexi. conia, Washingtonia, Canadia and Oregonia, Under the general title of Columbia, South America is to be subdivided into the provinces of Bolivia, Bra- zilia, Platesia and Peruvia. Forthe comfort and ea- couragement of our filibusters be it knowa that the province of Washingtonia is to embrace the island of Jamaica, the island of Cuba, the Bahamas, and all the other West India islands. The twenty-four provinces into which the globe is thus to be divided wil! com- prise the whole human family, of which the Pantopo. lis or the new Jerusalem, seated on the Bosphorus, is to be the patriarchal centre. “Then,” according to our oracle, “all the nations of the earth, awakened to sentiments of justice by the fecund aspirations of this new life, will make but one family of brethren, indissolubly united by the powerful bonds of unity, liberty and fraternity, strengthened by faith, hope and charity, and univerrally fructified by att, aci- ence and industry.” Meapow Brooz, 4 novel. By Mrs. Mary J. Holmes. Miller, Orton & Co. This is a simple but prettily written American tale, with a good mora! naturally worked out. Mrs. Holmes belongs to a class of writers who deserve to be encouraged, as their aim is to improve and form the mind of youth rather than to deteriorate it by familiarizing it with pictares of society under its worst aspect. The cooking at our hotels is, as a general thing, detestable, and in our private houses we have abandoned the simple and wholesome modes of our forefathers for a bad imitation of the French cuisine Mrs. Eliett's work will not, we fear, mend the mat- ter, inasmuch as it appears to be an ol/a podrida of different methods.
