If it be the policy of the company to pay this debt out of the profits of the road it will require more than two years to do itin, when threo millions of its bonds will become due. If it be atiempted to fund it, it can in these times be only done @teuch a sacrifice as must seriously impair the ability of the company to maintain such dividends as it has here- tofore paid. The business of ihe road, owing to the vigor- ous and wpbending severity of the actual Proaident of the company, and his unpopularity with the oolliers, and other general causes, has fallen off from fifty-five thousand tons to about twenty-five thousand toms per week, and | the coal trade is so depressed that it 1s difficult to collec ‘olla even on sosmalla tonnage. The wise sayings Of theae savana are given to the world with ali the impor. tavoe the subject and the indiyidcals can command, but we have yet to see how much good ft will do. The feot te that the speeches and the opinions o/ there respectabis in- dividuals are worth just nothing at all, They really know ‘very little about the matter, and there is not one of them, 0 for ag wo have seen, capable of originating « financial plan or remedy at all feasible or applicadis to the prossal emergency. Banks of this State who wish to retira their otroulation for a short period, instead of selling their stocks are re- ferred to the advertisement of Mr John B Marray, la the financial columa, We have dally reports of private meetings among our leading merobants, and consultations with bavk presi dents, and all sorts of romors relative to the revulsion, its progress, ite duration, its effects, the re asiy, &c , Kd, ali of which amount to just nothing at all. The present posi Won of financial affairs is not a vory dificult matter to cx plain, Everything connected with trade and commerce has, for the past ten years, been going ahead upon the high pressure privcipls. Expansion, exirayagance and specu lation bave had full swing, aud almost every man in the community has got into ico deep water. They oanuot touch bottom, and have, therefore, nothing to stand upon. Everything haa been done upon credit, avd aaythiag « man could do upon credit be has not hesitated a mo- ment about doing. The banks fave lod the way, and of oourse all wore bound to follow. It is vory seldom that the banks have any money to lent without finding parties willing to take ft. The eare wiih which money was obtained created new clases of borrowers, and the most prominent and ravenous par- {ex Im the Geld wers the rallroad companies. The banks tcized upon railroad acceptancos with avidity; railroad compsnios paid high rates of loterest, and they woro giad to get every dollar the banks had to lend at any price. In thin way all parties wore suited; for the banks wero dis. pored to loan to any extent, and it appeared that the ral! road companies could not get enovgh. The resources of the banks have in this wey boen absorbed to aa enormous smount. We have only to look at the flonting dobis of our loading ra!lroad companies to form a pretty good idea of the way our banks have disposed of their money. The mercantile classes hays not been the reciptents of thelr usval portion of bank loins, The railroads could a‘ford to pay better prices for money, and they therafore had the preference, The floating debt of the Michigan Southern Railroad Oompany amounts to about $2,000,000 ; the Erte Company, $2,000,000; Cleveland and Toledo, $750,000; Hudson River Reilroad $690,009 at least. Illinois Uentral, $3,000,000, Michigan Central, $1,800,000, and others pro- minent in this market to fall five million more—making « total of $16,000,000 the bulk of which is heid by the banks im this city. Their resources to this extent are locked up in these securities, amd not many week: since, with this re- vuision right upon ua, the Erie Railroad Company raised from certain banks in Wall stroot $600,0¢0 raore. Instead of lending money to the full line of their loans to the com- mercial classes doing a legitimate business, the bauks have Looked up full $15,000,000 in railroad acceptances, which aro pot worth onan averege forty cents onthe dollar. We bave in this fact the first great cause of the collapse. Tac credit system generally, for some time past, has been enormously inflated. We have for years boon engaged In all torts of extravagance, Yoars of prosperity had created & feeling of recklessness in the public mind that re- cognized Bo restraint, aad a steady bul rapicexpansion has ‘been going on in credi. The benks havo ran their lines of discount tens of millions higher than before known, ‘upon a smaller and weaker basis—they have reached an eggregate of one hundred and twenty-two millions of dol Jare—and woe then told them what would be the result. The contraction has since been more rapid than the pre- vious expansion, and the effect bas been to depreciate the value of their aggregate assets more than twenty-five per cent. In depreciating their own they have depreciated those tn the hands of the public at large, and hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars would not make good to-day the reduotion in the market vaiue of railroad seou- rities alone. Afver having made so mach mischief, after baving brought the whole couniry isto s financial revul- sion and endangered their very existence, they have learned o tittle wisdom, aud are now pursuing a conserva tive, judicious course, one which we trust will ultimately extricate themselves and the community from the embar- rassments and difficuities surrounding them.
