NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1857. ‘Tes “Bm” Swurpis —Since our recent exposure of the dishonest trick of an “altorney and counseller’”’ ef villaay, in sending letéers all over the country offering to furnish legal information’ on receipt of the “‘ous- tomary fee of $3,” Jarge numbers of responses have ar- rived at the Post office. ‘‘Boll,’’ not caring to expase him- self to @ too sudden acquaintance with the police, has failed to apply for the letters, and by order of the Post master Geueral they bave been sent to the dead liter office and opened, As thoy nearly all contained the “cus- tomary fee,’’ the money has been returned to the proper owners, who {i fs Boped will be more careful how they fall into such clumsy snares. This WAXY oars sinoe we bave soon aaything Hike ft, The evapemton of a New York city bank is rather an Upoommoes coournenos, but coming at this part calar jano- tare ts an even: crleulated to alarm the moat courageous, ‘The publio ming Is not ta & Condition to bear such an an: boandement with composure, and Ht le not, therefore, st all surprising that quite @ panio wae produced. We are not at al! astoniahed at the eusneceion of ¢he Mechanics’ Banking Avsoclation, We mentioned afew days since that twas im diffloulies at the Clearing House, and had to call upoa the other banks for sasisiance It le now reported that the immediate cause of the surpansion was the defalcation of ne of the clerks of that {natitution. The cause wil! be found more in the action of the management generally than im tho acts of the clork, however criminal they may be. The institution has from the first been rather an un- fortunate one. We believe that several defaloations have before this been developed among {ts officers, The sus- pension of the Mechanics’ Banking Association led distrust of ceveral cther banks, and there was quite a run upon the Bank of Commerce, the Meiropoliten and the Naread Banks, from depositors, The excitement in Wall atreet and {ts vicinity was most intense. Crowds fill- ed the sidewalks, and public confidence appeared to have Completely deserted the minds of the masses. The ma ‘nagera of the banks seemed to realize for the fret time the danger of their position. Several fallores were announced ‘this morning among the mrroantilo classes, ani tha} ad¢- ed fuel to the fame. We are, beyond, all quertion in the midat of a fearful revulsion; and where it will end the wineet among us cannot tell. We do not look for any miligation of our embarrassments and difficulties unti eoores upon scores of failures have taken place, and a long Period of prostraticn. Tho recovery from this collapse must be very gradual, and {t will leave marks of Its exist ence aad power for years. The end is by no means yet. ‘We bave just entered vpon it, and as tt extends it will etther force, Its to be hoped that our banking Inotita- Hons may safely woather the storm; but an examivatloa of their Jast returns shows that eome o7 them are euiitled te no sort of consideration, 4 lose investigation of cur trust companies would not be amiss just now. The New York Life and Trust Company, for ox- ample, bad, accordiog to ite last report, upwards of two and three quarter miliions of bills recetyable; and we an- derstand tbat it is a very “‘sweet'’ lot, In other words, there is covsiderable ‘sugar’ among It. Here ise Life anc Trust Company daily in the street buying notes of hand, because, we suppose, they can get them at high rates of interest. The Bank of Commerce is another weak concern. ‘The last rozort sbowed that its loans and dis- counts were $12,101,363, and tho deposita but $6,107,263 It ts our daty to boid up such managemest on the part of & leading banking institution to public condemnation, and ‘we intend to take the responsibility of doing so. The Bank of New York used to be considered one of the strongest banks in the city. Look at it now, With loans amounting to $4,144,341, 1 has @ deposit line of but $2,630,056. There are a gcod many other weak ones on the list; but the two we have named are among tho most prominent, and therefore the most culpable. The circulation of our olty banks is without doubt pretty safe. It is scoured principally by State atccks, deposited with the Comptroller. In the event of a large amount of these securitios being thrown upos the market at once their margin for depreciation would n> don>t be partially used up; but such @ contin. gency is rot likely to occur. The failure of Beebe & Co., brokers ard ballon dealers, waa reported thie morning. ‘This ts ene of the oldest houses in the street, dod was sup. powed to be very rich, The immediate cause of failure was entang/ements with the Ohio Life and Trust Company. The seourities received on loans tothe Trust Company, amounting to more than $500,000, were not available in the market. We uncorstand the house has a large surplus. Mesers. J. H. Prentice & Co , hatand fur dealers; Adams & Buckingham, flocr dealers; and Breese, Kneeland & Co., car ard locomotive manufacturers, Jersey City; were alto reported tc day. These comprise the princtpal events of the morning ip financial circles. The effect upon the took market wae, of course, very bad, Lower prices were realized than have been touched at any time within tho history of the securities named. There appears to be no bottom to railroad stooks, It is true, there is very little yalue in mest of them, but at the present rate of deoline moet of them most soon run completely out of sight. The Erte Railroad Company sveceeded this morning tn raising the money to pay the interest doe today. The company ba not, therefore, failed spon its interest just yet. The banks mage a bold push this morning, and came up to the scratch just ie time, It wae ® narrow essape for the foreign bondbeiers. The company now have ontil the Ist of November to gaiher strength for the interest pay- mont then due, The position of the New York Central Rajiroad Company is one of great danger to stockholder: Tho road doos not mush more than pay ite operating ox penres and provide for the interest on the funded debt Every cent of dividend Is borrowed and added to construc, tion socount, or indebiedness, just as much as with the Cleveland and Toledo, or any other rotten concern. The Central Railroad Company is not to-day « bit better off than the Erie Company, #0 far as the stock is concerned: The Central Company manages at present to pay the in. Wrest on its indebtedness without borrowing money, which ‘a more than the Erie Company does. Is Is well khown among railroad men that two cents @ mile for oxpres: trains, to which the New York Central Company is heli as 8 condition of popsolidation, dees not pay running expenses. We have in the finances of the Erie Railroad Company an isdex of those of the Central. No mau in his senses can compere the gross earnings of the two roads and come t, a conclosion more favorable to one than the other. Ina fow years the funded debt of the Central will be full as large as the E-le company. Every sddition to the Central’s debt endangers the dividend. The company’s credit ie still good, and probably will continee #0 for a while longer; but the time {s not far distant when « large joan will hare to be negotiated directly for constrection account, and then we shall see where the stock stands. The roadway of the Central i# running down in the face of reduced earnings All repsire which can for the moment be die penred with are lef for some foture time In this way the expenros may be for the moment reduced, but the company wil! vltimately have to crowd imto & abort period beavy outlays, as it did « year or Rwo since, when It sus. pended dtvidende for that purpose.
