FINANCIAL, AND COMMERCIAL. MONKY MARKE®S. Tomar, July 2~6 P.M. There was quite a buoyant stock market this morning, with about the utual activity. The most important movement to. day was in N. Y. Contral, and the trameaotions quite heavy. Erte was not 60 muoh operated tn, but improved a fraction: Michigan Southern works up gradually uader the tnflueace of the grand corner; it opened this morning at 64 per cont and closed at 63 per cent. There were anles at 49, sellers 60 days, and at 51, sellers 30 days. About twenty five thousand shares have been bagged by the cornering clique of speculators, and the supply is accumulating every day. Wecan only repeat our advice to outside holdersof to let the present period of iniation pass without putting upon Wall street all the iittle lots of stock held allover the | country. The last corner in Cleveland aud Toledo, got. up and carried through by the same parties engaged now in | Michigan Southern, cost them more than one hundred | thousand dollars, and they wore giad to get out at that, They are likely to suifer more seriously in the present movement in Michigan Southera, for they havea bigger load to carry, and, if possible, a more worthless stock. The last corner in Mich! gan Southern was made when it was the genera! impres. sion that the stock was a real bona fide permanent ten per cent security, and even tha) failed. When that corner commenced there were but about six thousand shares in the market, and when it closed the quantity in the hands of brokers was thirteen thousand sbares. The present corner commenced with thirty thousand shares alloat in the street, and when it closes the quantity will be nearer fifty thousand shares. As it stands it isa buge buble, likely to explode any mement from the most triting cause- Collapse \t must, sooner or later, and the party \avolved cannot by amy possibility escape immense losses. A cor- perivg combipation | calculated to injure any stock by largely iwcreasing the quantity in the markei. It accumu lates ig the hands of s small clique of speculators, who bypothecate it in any way and at any rate among the bauks and brokers, and when the gamo has been played oat this ‘stock comes upon the street in large lots and is slaugh. tered right and left. Any incrense in the price for travel will reduce the amount of travel, The advance in prices will be more than offset by a redmotion {pm the number of passengers, and as for any inoresse io charges (or freight it is impossible. The movement comes Ata very unfortunate period. With the yalue of prodace daily depreciating it is folly to talk about charging more for its transportation. It is too late to \atroduce these reforms, tf they may be so called. Ten years | ego, when the cost and capital of our railroads | were more on a par with their actual value, and compati- tion was comparatively nothing, higher prices could nave | peon charged and sustained; bat it is too late to aitompt it | pow. The revulsion in railroad property must continue until it wipes out many millions of their nominal cost. We look for the complete anpibiiation of the stock of three- quarters of the railroads of the country aad the lower classes of bonds in some of them. The enormous cost of there concerns can only be redeced in this way, and it le only by such ® reduction that the present tariit of prices | can be made w pay. Those railroad managers ask that the public should pay, by increased prices for travel, for | all the corruption and extravagance practised in the oon | struction of the roads, Had the roads bees property and | economically constructed from the start, we should not bave bad forty millions of dollars to pay im the Central | and thirty-eight millions im the Erie, but less than half the | fanyoun! in each.
