WHALBERG'S OONCERTS—MADAMB DE WILDORSTS AMINA—THE QEAMSTRESSES’ BENEFIT— THE OPERA 34 PHILADELPHIA—THINGS AT THE CITY THEA- ‘TABS, ETO., BTC, ‘Fhe succss of Mr. Thalberg’s Amerisan tour bids fair to outstrip, in every way, any musical ¢xpedition which has proceded it, not excepting the Jenny Lind and Sonteg @ampaigns. During the past week, for cxamph, be Played nine times before admiring crowds, Already pearly twelve thousand papils of the public schools ave bad the privilege of Hatening to the fines! concerts that have been given here. The ladies are especially de- Mghied wih the matinées, which are really very pleasant Social reunions, in which the artiet and die fair patrons moet M the most familiar mammor. To day, ate quarter Defere two, Mr. Thalberg gives the firet matinée of the ‘bir series. The programme includes six pleco Sor'the piano and the Miserere trem the ‘Trovatore’’ for ‘Wie Alexandre organ. On Teesday Mr. Thalberg gives hie Cwentieth concert at Niblo’s Saloon, assieted by D’Angri, Parodi, Mme, Patti Strakosuh and Mme. Johannsen, four (prime donne on the same aight. A‘ the Academy of Musto we have to record a brilliant ‘success for the first week of Mr. Thalberg’sseason, Ma- @ame de Wilhorst ! asewsg Lucia and Amina; Mile. Pare- @) Leonora, and Mme. Strakosch Azucensa, tn the ‘‘Treve- tore.” Madame do Wilhorst bad « gratifying succes fa the ‘‘Sonnambuls,”” particularly as she was prevented by illness from givieg the role the study and rehearse! ‘which its requiremente are gonerally supposed to do- mand. From Mme. de Wilhorst’s Amina we predict that she will take rank'with the most celebrated Rosinas, Nor- mas and other heroines of the lighter works of the greater composers. The ‘‘Sonnambula’’ will be given at the Academy this evemiag. On Wednesday Tiberi! bas bis benefit. ‘The benefit of the Shirt Sewers’ Union at Laura Keene’s theatro on Saturday was highly successful, the’ house be- wg crowded to excess. A new two act comedy (called a “‘comedictta,” but there is no such word im apy lau: Weege) was produced on this occasion and wes success- fal. It is called “ Love in "76? The soone is laid tm this ‘Btate and the period is the early pari of the Revolution, ‘The heroice, Rose Elsworth (Miss L. Keene), is a staunch ‘whig althc ugh ber family are all tories. She ts fiancée to Captain Armstrong (Lingham) of the Continental forces and is aleo paraued by Captain Arbald of the king’s troops. ‘This offlcer, with Major Cleveland (Burnett), ‘visit the Elsworth family, and the bold Armstrong is un- Sortunate enough to be on the premises at the same time, Be ts taken, and,as be bat been on secret service his neck isin danger. Rose tries several expedients to save her Qover, but Cleveland, who isin command, sees through them all, At the end of the first act blue coat ts sized by two red conte and placed in elese oustody. Im the second act we find Gleveland saying a good word for his friend Ar. ‘bald to Rose, who mixes up the captains in such a way that she secures a pledge from the Major to protect her Dusband at all bazards, at the same time leading Cieve- Jand to believe that she intends to marry the King’s of- fcer. It now becomes e trial of strategy between the ‘Major and Rose, which ends of course in the marriage of the latter to the rebel Captain, and the enforosment of Major Cleveland’s pledge. Klsworth, peri, says, in a pa- ‘wonising kind of way, that the lady bas earned her hus. Dand, and gives his consent to the marriage after it is ever. With the exception thvt such an incident, with such Fesults, could not possibly have ocourred, this play merits @ommendation. 1} has the advantage over other pieces called pationa), and treating of revolutionary times, that ‘Nt does not deal in fustian, patriotism or barangues about the geuius of liberty. Rose bas some smart repartees for the King’s officers, such as any of our whig Grandmothers might have used, and Armstrong Mtends to convert his father-in-law to the colonial @euse, but that je all. The dialogue is smoothly and Mmartly written, and the character of Rose very well @rawn. The others are all commonplace, if we except mm wmsuccessful attempt at fun, im the character of a @ountry schoolmaster. Rose, technically speaking, isa geod part, and Miss Keene played it well, giving all the Fipartics an extra odge. “Love in 76” is 8 nice little e@omedcy, and ought to have a good run. ‘The Opera in Philadelphia, st the new Academy of Music, hasbeen quite successful. The ‘Tyavia'a’’ ts to ‘Be brougat out thie week, and there are whispers about the ‘‘Hicilian Vespers,’’ by the ssme composer, which Maretzek promised some time ago. All the city theatres are doing very well, and as there tuto bea great spring trade, they ought to bavea rich Rarvest for theensuing three menths. The anmounce- ments for this evening, although containing no startling Bevelty, will be found very tempting. Al tie Baoapway fumarase, Mr. Forrest, who bas re covered from a severe fit of iness, will play Richolicu, tm the play of that name. Mr. Daly, Mr. and Mrs. Da- ‘venport also appear in the piece. The farce of ‘The Irish ‘Pator’’ will be added. At Burron’s Tusates, Mrs. Charice Howard has her Qiest benefit this evening, and announces ‘'Time Trios Al,” “Obarles the Second’’ and “The New Camille.’’ Me. Howard plays in ‘Carles the Second,’’ and Mr. Barrett, » comedian, now to this house, makes his bow ‘tm ‘Time Tries All.”” Barton and Brougham are both in he bill, which is a very attractive one, aside from the (@inims of the ben: /iciare, which are many, and which will pe doubt be duly remembered by the public. At Lavas Kunwa’s Teaarea, the spoctacie piece, ‘Faust ‘and Mauguorite’’ is announced (or its seventh perfor tmaneo, together with “Love in '76.” Miss, Koone plays fa both ploces and Jordan aud Whoatloigh in tho first. Cn The March Term of the Law Courts. The February term of some of the law oour's haviog \ermipated on Saturday, the March term wii] commence thie day, the first Monday in the month. The General ‘Term of the Suprome Court continue their February term, for the purpose of hearing some unfinishea osuses, and will then adjourn to some time in the month for the ren- dition of decisions in the causes argued. Two trial branches of the Circuit Court will be held. The ber of causes on the calendars are still numerous. Cham. bers and Special Term for motions will be held at ten o'clock each morning. The Judges of the Superior Court have made an order continuing the February trial term tothe first week in March, for the purpose of disposing of an enGnished Cause; bus the Maron term will also be beld this day. A dccision rendered by Judge Duer, on Saterday, m the case of MoSpedon & Baker, nominally against the Mayor and Commonality, but virtually against tho Comptroller, has completely cornered Mr. Fiagg. He must now pay the bills for work and services per. formed for the city, which, for some months past he has obstinately refused to do. The consequences to the officials in the City Hall aed the courts have been most {noonvenient to such of them as are dependent on their incomes from month to month; but in some cases Mr, Fiagg’s cruel obstinacy has worked great and harrassing evils on the more needy. We bave heard that men of large families have been obliged to sell their certificates St considerable discount to parties who have money at their disposal, but who knew that sooner or later Mr. Flagg’s dogged ness should yield to the superior authority of our courts of law. The Comptrollor may, in his love Of Mitigation, appeal from the decision of Jadge Dacr to ihe court in general term, but we can warn him it wil} be of no avail, and will tend only to increase the law expenses of the city, already too much toflated through the bad policy of Mr. Flagg, and add still furtber vexation to the many unpaid claimants on the city treasury. We understand that Judge Duer submit. ted his decision to his associates, all of whom concurred im ite legality and justness; am appeal, therefore, would only end in the same result. ‘The Court of Common Pieas will hold general term this month, end will render decisions this morning. ‘Bho Marine Court, general term, gave quite a number of decisions on Saturday. Judge Maynard on the previous day decided that Mr. Geo. W. Niles, for reasons stated tbereim, should not be permitted to practice im that Court ‘aan attorney and counsellor at law. At first it was rather @ small concern, but, being very profitable rapidly enlar, From the earnings of one boat on each Ocean, the line became quite an extensive one. L White became an active managor, and was oue of the most prominent stockholders in the new company, Mr N. H, Wolfe became largely interested in the stook. The ‘stock from the start was of a spoculative obaracter, and fluctuated rapidly and largely. It had a good basis, for ‘the company was highly productive from the very begin ning. The largest operators im the stock wore Mosers White and Wolfe, and thsy each realized about $200,000 iv ‘few mouths on their differences, Mr. White operate’ with a great deal of taxt and shrewda: and rapidly accumulated a fortune, At this time the stook ha: become well disiributed, and ruled wt about 80 to 86 per cent. Although the company had a large capital, most of it was merely nominal, and but ® portion of the stcck had at that time been issued while the company owned very little property. Mr. Vao derbilt was tho principal owner of the boats, and it be came necessary for the company to purobase his interest ‘This was done by an issue of stook to an extent suilicioa’ to realize the amount required to mect bis demand. Ip this way the ospital was Giled up. Mr. Vanderbilt re igned the agency of the company, aud Mr Chas.
