The return of Mr. Konsett and Mr. Rossiter (th> fatter bas been in Eur:pe prosecuting his studies ia its most famous galleries) will aid very much the at- tempts now making vy the National Academy to erect an institution worthy of the corp ‘rate offurtof the great body of artists who are members of the National Academy of Design. Tho indefatigable efforts of the directors of that institution, it ia said, are directed to the attainment of that object. Mr. T. 8. Cummings, whe has devoted years to the cause of art, and ia alao one of the few left of the old school gentlemen who took great pleasure in advancing the fine arts, is busily engaged in im- parting instruction to a olase of pupils, many of whom give much promise of future excellence. Mr. Cummings presides over both the schools of the Academy, in which pupils draw from the life as well ag from models in plaster. ‘There is much feeling of discontent among land- scape painters of merit in relation to the noglect with which this branch of art is treated by our town and country gentlemen. An artist equally ekiliul in historical and landscape painting as- cribes it in great measure w the apathy of the press and the rage for foreign productions. He says he lately visited a returaed millionaire, who had brought home from Italy some laadsoapes which would disgrace the cabin of his steamboats. “They, however,” he remarked, “will be a standing topio of conversation when company is received, and that constitutes their only merit, perhaps, in the estimation of their owner.” Mr. William Hart, whose stadi» is ever open to those who delight in beautifully rendered landscapes, bas several fine works completed. The enchanting scenery of New lingland seema to have imparted all its charms to his pencil. Nor is he lesa felicitous ia the rendering of Scotch Highland scenery, from the study of which he last autumn returned. A fine pio- ture, “The arrival of Duncan, King of Scotland, and his escort at the oastle of Macbeth,” needa only to be seen to secure a poaseasor. “Doune Castle,” and a subject from the Lady of the Lake, are equally worthy of admiration. Mr. David Huntington has on his easel a noble portrait of Gulian C. Verplanck, which promises to yank among the most masterly performances of the age in portraiture. Some landscapes also from this artist's pencil have found their way to the private gallery of one of the very few cultivated amateurs of art. Mra. &. A. Tryon, of River terrace, Hoboken, and Mrs. Lilly Martin Spenser have recently finished some very beau‘iful works. Both these lady artists are ed for the beauty of tneir coloring apd delicacy of touch. Mr. Addison Richards, so well known as a skilful delineator of Southern sc , ia busily employed in the double labor of revising his sketches and un- parting instructions to a select class of advanced pa- pils. An unfinished view of the Adiroudack Moun- tains is near completion on his easel. At the studio of Mr. Charles Elliot may bo seen three portraits of Colonel Kenny. a genteman who is well known to all who take an interest in Central, American affairs, The earliest of the three was painted by an artist named King, now forgotten; the next by Bass Otis, do.; and the last by Elliot himeelf. Age seems to have improved the gallant Colonel amazingly, as he appears to wear 4 more man'y aspect. However, as nothing in the shape of portraiture from the pencil of Mr. Biliot can look otherwise, we must attribute the Mars like look of the valiant filibustero to the kindly offices of both at and nature. A portrait, also, of Mr. James Wadsworth, of Genessee, ia Baresi yg! by compe- tent judges to be an unrivalled work of this eminent limner. Other portraits, among which is a fine one of William B. Porter, grace the walls of Mr. Elliot's stadio. Mr. J. T. Peele, an American artist now in Eng- land, finds constant employment for his telicitous pencil. “Little Red Riding Hood,” a recent juction, has just been secured by a gentleman of ine taste in art matters, Several pictures, also, the production of the past year, are added to tae al- reacy numerous fine paintings which our first class artists turn off their easels. His Honor Mayor Wood finds time to si! for his pote but, aa the portrait is like his Honor, until ie new charter comes down from Albany, in embryo, nothing now need be said about it. Mr. Kensett, who, it is said, has, during his ab- sence in Europe, made > a fortfolio of drawings, is on a view on the Hudson river; Mr. y , whoso studio adjoins the former artist, ix basking in the sunshine of the scenery of Lake Geor; Mr Cafferty is a little bitten with asceticism. Two heads of monks, at their devotions, have made their appearance from his vigorous Their sombre color is in fine contrast with some traits of gentlemen in his stadio, who fare much bet- ter both at the table and at the hands of the artist. Mr. Cafferty ney indolge his taste in making monks on canvass, but he will never make a monk of himeelf. Portrait of a boy blowing babbles, by Mr. -———. This performance is of that mediocre character as neither to entitle the artist to much praise or cen- sure. It is intended as a present from the Fremont to the Fillmore Club, as a frail memorial of their conversion from the heresy of Know Nothingiam. The likeness is taken from a youthful miniature of Mic Nichols haa prod ced, during the past r. Nic jaced, during year,a number of charming landacapes— american scenery. His best performance in thie line ia the twin lakes of Salisbury. A number of fine sketches of Enaro- pean ecenery, made during his tour abroad, are also open to ii tion at his studio. Mr. Edwin White, whose historical og have secured him an honorable position the higher walks ot art, is among the few who have profited by a close study of the antique. This is so visibleeven to ir eyes that one is struck with the vriginality and severity of his works. A pei wrought picture, “Michael Angelo in the Studio of Titian, at the Request of Vasaro,” is a specimen of the lian masters mode of rendering a greet aub- ject. The works of this gentlemen wear neither the tawdry nor sombre aspect which ay ‘e pet i, as artista, Like Garlo Marrati, who, still improved himself, this artist is ever a ing the models of antiquity. “New a ‘8 Piret ao now in progress, bids fair to be every way iy his na and power of exe- cution. Other pictures, “ Hymn of the Hague nots,” matleman in Chicago; ““Co- “ Portrait of a Lady and Child,” by Mr. ——. A work of so much pretension as the one under notice mast not go unrebuked. Every arcist has in some degree a manner of execation either peculiar to bim- self, or imitative of some reputable example, but the ter of this picture has made free with all, and baving bat a callow knowledge of propriety, he un- fortanately preferred finery to harmony, and profes sional trie! to truth. dor, however, requires an expression of praise in relation to a more recent and lesa ante effort. A parer air and grace which pervades performan-:e seems to promise, like the orisons of a Magdalen, that the sins and blandiahments of a capricious and perverted taste are regretted and given over. Mr. ge Innes, whom there is much reason to believe hath more than his share of professional ill Jock, has recently luced a charming landscape of age — Thi Ao. like t. oO nd our own Page, is prone to experimenting.
