It is estimated that differences of Jacob Little & Co, amount to nearly ‘alllion of dollars, and that the total amount of their racts do not fall much short of ten millions of dollars, is the third time this house has fafled, and the lia this time are probably greater than ever before. senior partner of the concern has for several years consistent bear, and often his operations have to such an extent as to entirely defeat his plans and roy his calculations, His transactions in all the lead- railroad stocks have been by the thousand shares at , and the market has frequently been sustained at h points by the demand from him, to provide for his at maturity. There is no doubt but that Mr, has been the very life of the market at times, and perations bave served to keep the machinery of spe- on in motion. His contracts lately have been prin- iy 2 New York Central, Chicago and Rock Island, , Cleveland and Toledo, and Reading. For some is past he has paid out large amounts on differences, could have gone On, without doubt ‘or some days r, but bis own necessities would have sustained es, or inflated them still more, and the only alterna- that presented {tself was a suspension. The effectof movement ts cicarly evident. It must at no distant depress prices materially. For afew days the mar- may be even more buoyant than before, but the sustaining power has departed. Tho principle in- ed was perfectly correct in all fts parts, but in carry- it out there were, unfortunately, no limits recognized. street is now filled with speculators, who are loaded with the enormous amount of railroad stocks which for years been accumulating at the Stock Exchange, they know not where to look fora market. The tuside demand has been suddenly cut off by failure to-day, and we do not sce how this mass of ia to be loaded or scattered without reguiar break down. There were rumors this oon of another failure, and we have no bt such rumora and such realities will be te prevalent for some days. Active prepa- rations sre making for the spring trade, which commences im Februsry, and ts ¢xpected to be very lively. From the improved resources of the people, through the aid of good prices for produce, and the diffusion of California gold among them, their powers of consumption have beea greatly augmented. Notwithstanding our imports last year reached about $314,000, yet our exports exceeded them by about $12,000,000, including shipments of specie. The importations for the spring trade are expected t be on a large scale, the heaviest arrivals of which will come to hand during the next id eosuipg month, and should the demand prove as good as anticipated, we may expect to see a protty good demand for specie to pay for duties. Should Congress act upon the suggestions of the Secre- tary of the Treasury and adopt the measures reco mended, such as admitting wool duty froo, it would hay sooner or later, conaiderablo in! oo over the value of woolen Jabrics, which, by being made and gold at cheapor rates, would Jead to increased consumption, and thas tend to sustaia the prices of the raw material at remu- erative figures to the grower. At the opening of the spring trade, reduction in standard woollen and cotton grades can reasonably be ezpccted, while ehould the raw materials keep up, it is possible that highor prices may govern the market. THE GAME LAWS—RETAIL PRICES, ETC. It is now time for our game laws to be enforced, but of course no notice will be taken of them by our poultry, game and fish deale: There formerly existed im this city a “Sportemens’ Club,” the object of which was to enforce these obnoxious laws, The mombers made regu- lar visits to the markets and entered complaints againat the offending dealers before a magistrate. Latterly, how- ever, this clud became a kind of black mail concern, and afow ofthe members mado it a business to threaten dealers, who were willing to pay something rather than go before # justice. The following is aa abstract of these laws, which we publish for the benefit of the curious:— an ordinance of the Mayor and Commonalty of Ni York, passed April 23, 1839, it ts provided, ia the firs section, tLat “no person shall expose tor tale, or bave in his or ber possesion tn the city of New York, any trout, between the 15th day of October andthe sth day of March, in any year, under the penalty ot five dollars for each trout 80 ‘exposed for sale or had {nu possession.
