Since leaving New York, on the 12th of April Jaat, the Victoria has been engaged in the very arduous duty of delivering men material and supplies at different ports on the coast, and in that time has visited one hun- dred and six ports, and run a distance of 17,800 miles, along probably the most difficutt and dangerous coast known. This terminates the third year of the Victoria’s service, and it is not too much to say that the skill, en terprise and sound judgment displayed by Captain Sluy- ‘ter has excited the admiration of those who can best ap- Preciate the difficulties of bis position. Occurrence. STICIDE OF LIRUTENANT JOHN T. WALKER, UNITED STATES WAVY—CORONER’S INQUEST UPON THE BODY —STRANGE CONDUCT ON THE PART OF AN OFFI- CIAL. A most melancholy case of suicide by hanging occurred atthe Mancion House, Chambers street, yesterday fore- noon. Jobn T. Walker, lieutenant in the United States Navy, and attached to the steam frigate Wabash, was found suspended by the neck in his bedroom at the above mentioned hotel, yesterday about 11}, A. M. The de- ceased was stopping at the Mansion House prior to his departure to join the sloop St. Marys, whither he was about proceeding in the steam frigate Wabash. During his stay in this city he was observed to be somewhat melancholy, but hig friends had no idea of there being apytbing serious upon the mind of one who was usually im possession of excelient health and spirits. The deceased, it appeared, as far as we could learn, was stopping at the hotel in question with an intima friend of his, and at breakfast yesterday morning ap- peared in good epirite. He then rotired to his room, and was never seen alive afterwards. About 11% o'clock this friend of deceased knocked at the bedroom door of Mr. Walker for the pur- pore of seeing the latter, when, to his surprise, he re- ceived no answer from within. Tbe proprietor of the bouse was then called and questioned in relation to the matter, when it was egreed to make ® second effort to obtain admittance to the room of deceased. The offort ‘was fruitless; no sound proceeded from the apartment, which caused no little alarm to those seeking admission. It was then resolved to force open the door, when to the horror and surprise of all the dead form of Mr. Walker ‘was discovered barging from the bedpost. On an exami- uation of the body life was found to be entirely extinct, although the body was quite warm. The deceased was partially undressed, and was hanging with his fect under the head of bis bed. A rope was the instrument used ia putting the plan of suicide into execution. Coroner Hilis, on being notified ot the occurrence, pro. ceeded to tne hotel, and neld an investigation en the Of deceased. The investigstion was proceeded with in ‘the most private manner, and not even the names of the witnesses were maue pablic by this official. We endea- vored to fornish our readers with a report of the inquest, but ctrange to say, Corcner Hills would not allow our re- Porter to look st the evidence taken in the case. Instead of placing tbe document on file in the Coroner's office, as is the custom usually adopied, the Coroner in this case thought proper to retain it in his possession, without giv- ing any just or reasons for so doing. In con- sequence of this arbitrary conduct on the Coronor, we are unable to say what thos concealing the inquest from the "public; his conttituente will not uphold him in bis utter ignorance of what constitutes courtesy and good breeding. But we are digressing from the subject before us. Lieutevant Walker has a wife and family resid- tad intelligence of a husband and a father’s untimely ond yee to them. The body of deveased was enclosed ina coffla yesterday after- boop, for tbe put of carrying it to his late residence for werment. deceased was thirty-five years of nge apd was a native of Michigan. He was a remarkably Che lookimg man, and endeared bimseif to a large circle of ‘acquaintances in this city and elsewhere. Jo pianstb!e cause bas yet been as igned for the com- wission of the rash act. We could aot learn whether do- ceared Jeftany letters bebind hi: plaining his reasons for commit:ing seif éestruction, but we presume, from a conversation bad with @ friend of deceased, that none were written, and that probably sulcide was committed pon the spur of the momeet, leaving no time for refieo- Loa oF letters of explanation ved his citizen of the State of Onto tn the year 1841; that he re. ceived bis commision as Lieutemant on the 16th of Sep- te , 1855; was at sea service two months while thus inetoned. Operators im Erie are anxiously looking for the annual report of that company. It is all prepared and will be out some tme this week. The principal prints have already been published. The net earnings, according tothe company’s figures, have been twelve per cent on the the capital, which is equal to $1,200,000. Of this we know that $420,000 bas been paid into the sinking fund, leaving $780,000; and we also know that the whole of that has been disposed of in some way, for the Company has no surplusin hand beyond the sinking fund. We must, however, wait for the report, and then we shall haye something official. After the adjournment of the board the following sales of bonds and stocks were mado at auction by Simeon ae At the second board lower prices ruled. The Persia’s advices were not generally known until after the adjourn- ment of the first board. The effect of the European news was of an unfavorable character.
