To-day is the seventy-third anniverrary of the evacus- thon of New York city by the British forces, an event that occurred in the year 1783. Last year the Board of Courciimen appropriated $1,000 for the proper obser- | ‘vance of the day, but the Aldermen, by deoreeing that | Rone of the money should be expended for eating or drinking, killed the appropriation most effectually. Th's year there has beem no recognition of the day by the authorities, and its only observance will be the military Parade, which will no doubt be magnificent. It ig to be regretted exceedingly that our citizens do not pay more attention to the national holidays, and ap- propriatety colebrate the events that give them their sig nificance. It begets kinditer feelings between the different sections of the country, and does more for the perpetuity of the Usion than all the buncombe speeches mad during & political campaign. The enormous tand sales of the Illinois Central Railroad Com- pany have brought in a new set of buyers for the stock. Orders from Europe are all the time in the market, and every steamer goirg out takes more or less of both stock and bonds, There were nosales o! Galena and Obicago railroad stock this afternoon. It was offered at 12) per cent on time, and 119 per cont bid, cash. The bank state- met is much more favorable than asticipated, amd it kave holders of stock moro confidence. We do not seo how it (a possible to get speculative railroad stocks much higher. They are all high enough now, and as fora genoral speculative movement, it appears to us totally out of the question. The banks aro running up tho aggregate movement about as fast as it declined dur- ing October and the early part of November. The sp:cie rererve is now about where it was the first week in Sep tember; but it will be difflcult to keep it at that point under am expansion in the discount department. The deposits are increasing at about the sama rate as the line of discounts, and we have no doubt the lowest points of the season have been touched. Importations tor the spring wade will soon be coming in actively, and the banks will have to let out to meet the increasing wants of businere, The contraction in all the departmerts bas been very great, and could not well have gone beyond or below the ngures reported without having caused a great deal of difficulty among the commercial classes. Deducting this from the net receipts, there would remain $15,438 towards a dividend on the preferred stock. The October dividend of five per cent on the preierred stock, bas, therefore, necessarily been omitted. In relation to the road, the Hartford Times says: — any- price, and then go om and plete the line, it would bo one of the most profitable operations in the railroad line ever carried out in this courtry. Unlees this is done it cannot be expected that tbe road, however well managed, will be able, for som tow years to come, to earn very much more than the iu- terest op its bonded and fivating debt. But though at Present not a profitable investment to its stockboldere in the way of dividends, it bas been a great enterprise of in- dispemable importance and incalculable benedt to the ‘trace and wealth of this city; snd the road has, without doubt, enhanced tho value of the property of tbe various cities and towns aloag its route, to an amoun far exceed- ing the cost of iis coustruction.
