From these calculations others ‘may be made in regard to tho value of the islands, &c., by any person who cares to arrive at any such informa tion. That the guano could be taken away much faster {a not a matter of question. One has but to look at the tslands and he will naturally inqaire, ‘Why are ships de- tained here so long?’’ Of course if it was not for the Great detention here, and the consequent great expense, the number of ships would increase, and, of course, the ‘mount of guano exported would also increase, There @ze at present about ten shutes (public) on the two (slands, (North and Middle, the South island never hay- {ng been worked.) There might be one hundred. One man bas the contract from the Peruvian govern- ment for digging the guano and loading the boats, and that man is all-powerful. He is, in fuct, the Peruvian government. His wealth is unbounded, and his infu ence in consequence is great. He has the .oost to say in drawing up the charter parties, and, of course, (orces the which our Americun explorers intend to take.
