fINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Suxpay, Sept. 76 P.M. "Who stock market at the close yesterday had a slight sdownweard tendency. On Friday there was @ more active movement than has been noticed for some days, and it continued nearly up to the close yesterday, but prices ‘were not so well sustained. The improvement of the previous day brought out so much stock that the parties engaged in the expansion were at once filed, and the de- mand sensibly diminished. There was no basis tor the ‘rise; consequently it was without trength. A few weeks we had asimilar movement, and it occurred on the day of the week; but it exhausted itself in a fow days, and lower prices were reached then had ruled before. The money market is not quite so stringent as it ‘was a fow weeks since, and the little let up bas created tm the minds of many @ belief that we have passed through the worst. In this they will soon fad out their mistake, Tae geveral business of the country is @ lial» late this season, and the demand for money for business spurposes has not, therefore, come 60 early as usual; buy 4t is gure tocome, The contraction in tae bank move moot is going on steadily and will wituout doubs reach the extent cstimated, This temporary de- ‘ereage in the demand for money will operate uafavora- ‘bly for those who have been within the past two or three days induced to buy stocks. Toey will ind their thirty ‘ard sixty days purchases coming due in the midetof tight ‘times, and be compei! ‘to realize ander great disadvan- ‘ages. The market |v #0 much burdened wita the larger clafs of railroad stock. that an ordioary pinch must have @ serious effect on prices. We have not had aoything like @ tight money market for many mouths. Que of those old fashioned twists in the money market would, with the present eupply of stocks in the hands of brokers, produce '@ panic equal to any we bave had for years. The time ia rapidly approaching when the demand for money requires Bilarge eupply, when call loans must be at a moment's /motice liquidated, when the banks will want every dollar ‘of money out on bypothecated stockt—when nobody has money, and everybody wants it. That time comes about a8 regular as the seasons, and those who anticipate it long jenough to prepare themselves for it may expect to Pecape, but those who heedlessly rush into stock specula- tions, regardless of even the present state of thiags in the financial world, and give no thought to the future, must fake the consequerces of such folly. The barometer of the stock market indicates lower prices. ‘The exportation of specie from this port last week was as follows :— Brg Dopun oF SPECIE FROM THE PoRT Of NEw York. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction sale of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday next, at halt- past 120’clock, at the Merchauts’ Exchange. ‘The anthracite coal trade for the past week has been sctive, and the tonnage by each of the several carrying sompanies large. The Lehigh Navigation shipped for the week ending on Saturday last, 38 676 tons, making for ‘he season, 743,688 tons, being 73,773 tons less than to sorresponding time last year. For the week ending at he same time, there were carried over the Lehigh Valley Railroad 5,794 tons, and for the season 94,059 tons, vhich, added to the present season’s tonnage by the anal, gives an aggregate tonnage from the Lehigh region {887,747 tors, exceeding last year’s tonuage by 20,238 ons. From the Schuylkill region the tonnage for the week uding on Thursday last was, by the canal, 34,660 tons, ‘nd for the season, 711,385 tons, being a falling off on last ear’s business to correspondtivg time, of 3,605 tons; and »y the Reading Railroad, 52,829 tons for the week, and 484,878 tons for the year, being 156,452 tons less than ‘st year to corresponding time. The falling off in pro uction in the two regions to this time is 124,166 tons—a iference that can hardly be made up at this late period fhe season. Coal prices we think must advance. The Hov. J. Of the corn and oats conside- rable amounts have been taken for local consump- tion, &c., and the stocks are not, therefore, what the above apparently shows. In the case of Perkins vs. Stanley, recently tried in the Muskingum Common Pleas, Judge Searle held that, in Ohio, a railroad can own no property but such as is essential to the proeecution of its business and the prosecution of its business is its only mede of paying any of its debts. Much more is this true with regard to a creditor who advances money to build and equip the road upon the faith of a mortgage executed at the time of the advance, and before the road is either built or equipped. The road, its equipments and its revenues are pledged to the creditor. The revenue isto be semi-annually accumulated to pay the semi-annual instalments of interest, and the mortgagee has his lien upon it as fast as itis earned. The road is to be run to earn revenue, and any attempt to seize the road or its equipments, or its materials for repairs, er its tolls for freight and passengers, is fatal to the rights of the mortgagee. Nor does the assertion of this prin- ciple enable a railroad company to set its creditors et defiance. Whenever its creditors are of opinion that its affairs will be better managed by a court of equity than by the directors, we may expect them to apply for the appointment of a receiver. The annexed statement exhibits tae cost per mile, the gross earnings per mile in the month of July, and the gross per cent earnings on cost for the month, of the most prominent railroads in this mar- ket :— Rangoap Trarrio Iv Juty, 1856, Grossearn Cost per ingsin July Gross earn’gs ‘mile per mile. on cost. It will be seen that the gross earnings in July ranged from 5-6 to 2 5-6 per cent. The cost of our railroads is represented by both bonds and stock. The interest on the bonds ranges from six to eight per cent; and the stock gets the balance of net earnings, whatever it may be, in some shape. The month of July is not avery good month for such an exhibit, and the ag- gregate for the year will be on each road consider- ably more than twelve times the above per cent gross. The receipts of the Williamsport and Elmira Rail- road Company, from April 1 to July 1, were fifty per cent greater than the corresponding months of last year. The receipts of July were more than double, being $22,000, besides $4,000 of uncollected back tolls, entered this month. It is estimated that the receipts for August will be $30,000; for September, $35.000 to $40,000. The coal trade is now fairly be- ginning to move, and nearly all the cars contracted for have been delivered on the road. In addition to this the company are sending Northward large quan- tities of railroad pig iron. One contract with a railroad company in Wisconsin is taking over the road eight thousand five hundred tons of rails. The barley trade is also active, and it is estimated that before the Ist of May from four to five hundred thousand bushels will be brought over the road. Large quantities of wool, flour and other produce are also arriving, and the road will be taxed through the winter to its utmost capacity. In short, the ex- pectations of its friends have been fully equalled, if not exceeded, and they confidently expect that next year it will take its place as a cash dividend paying stock among railroad investments, fhe value of general merchandise imported into this port last week amounted to.
