M. ‘The stock market during the past week has been very dull and depressed. The téndency of prices throughout has been and at the close yesterday lower prices ruled than at the close of the week previous, As the market value of the leading railroad stocks recede, the quantity pressing for eale increases. Yesterday the sales were larger than in any day previous during the week, and there ap- pears to be a growing anxiety to realise. The sales of cash stock are increasing. As the season ad- vances, and the money market becomes more strin- gent, holders of stocks will realize without fortifying themselves with time contracts. In the early part of the present contraction, thoae who were compell- ed to sell for cash, turned round and made a pur- chase of the eame quantity on time, buyer’s option ,80 as to carry it over the most stringent period and secure any improvement that might take place be- yond. As the probability of a serious decline in prices strengthens, there is not so much disposition to purchase on time. Holders are selling stock for cash, with the intention of waiting a more favorable time to buy in again. The money market is gradually, but steadily, hardening. The demand is slowly increasing, and the banks find their deposits daily decreasing. We do not look for very tight times before the middle of October. Up to that time the market will become more ac- tive, and the supply of money less. It mat- ters very little what the movements of specie may be. The banks may increase their specie re- serve or not: it will make very little difference in the result. Last year at this time the banks had as much specie as they now have, with a discount line of ten millions less; at that time the deposits were ten millions less than at present, showing that the loans were regulated more by the deposits than by the specie in hand. The deposits of country banks will soon be rapidiy drawn down by the demand for the movement of produce. Advices from the West re- port great activity in grain, and the probability is that the volume of breadstuffs that will come for- ward during the fall season will be greater than ever before known. This will require large amounts of money, and it must be drawn from our banks. The drain for a time will be active, but at the usual pe- riod it will all come back. After running the regu- lar course of trade, it will accumulate again in our banks, where it will again cause an expansion in loans to stock speculators and an inflation in prices for stocks. In the meantime, however, we must prepare ourselves for a severe stringency and aserious contraction in the market value of all speculative stock securfties. The wisest course for speculators would be to let go, and when the lowest points have been reached, to take hold again, and follow the improvement which naturally takes place after a long depression, up to the high- est points again. It is always best to go with the tide in financial affairs. There is no use in at- tempting to stem the current, with even unlimited resources at command. The true secret of success in the stock market is in following prices up and down as the changes take place, and those who first fore- see these changes make the most money. There is go greater folly in Wall street than to stick firmly to the same side in stock operations. Even in the most worthless fancy there are times for the bulls a8 well as for the bears. There may be times when it would not be considered a very dangerous trans- action to buy even a worthless stock, although none but those who are daily at the Board of Brokers should enter very largely into such hazard ous speculations. The market now is on the down- ward turp, and the true way is to letit run. By getting out as early as possible, the loss, if any, can be made up more easily on the other end. It is very difficult for holders to look a’ the market in this light, and they frequently sub. mit, after waiting a long time for a reaction, to enor- mous sacrifices. There are many holders of stocks who now refuse to realize, who will before the lapse of sixty days sell at prices three and five per cent below current rates. These things always have been, and we suppose always willbe. It is this class of operators who supply the material to keep the machinery of stock speculation in motion. The exportation of specie from this port last week was as follows:— Surrmets or Srecre rrom tix Port or New Yor. $10, Steamship Alma, Havre, American gold... 000 00 Do. — Baltic, Liverpool «| ,000 00 Do. do, ailver coin... 000 00 Do. do. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction eale of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday next, the Ist September, at half-past 12 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. The list will comprise about $80,000 first class railroad bonds, in addition to other desirable stocks and bonds for investment. The charter of the Ilinois Central Railroad Com- pany exempts it from taxation on the payment of a certain proportion of ita gross earnings to the State. Doubts have been expressed whether this privilege is constitutional, and likewise whether it extends to protect the company from county and town as well as from State taxes. Some counties have attempted o collect them. Atthe last term of the Supreme Couit in Ottawa, the case of McLean county against this railroad company was decided, and puts all these questions at rest. The Court held that the Legislature had power under the constitution to ac- cept a proportion of its income in lieu of all other taxes, and that the company were liable for none other, either for county or State, or any other pur- pose. This decision relieves the company from all ocal taxation, but requires from it a pretty large proportion of its earnings. The sum paid the present year is $29,529. When the Branch shall be finished, and after the road shali be in fall opera- tion, should its income amount to two and a half millions, as its friends expect, the income of the State from it will be $175,000. The Chiriqui Improvement Company a few days since, issued proposals for the sale of coal at the port of Bocos de Toro, to steamship companies having vessels navigating the Caribbean Sea. The coal is particularly adapted to steam purposes, and the demand is likely to be far in excess of the pre- sent capacity of the company to make deliveries. The annexed statement of the property and pros- pects of the company has been prepared by the Board of Directors:— spose of said lands, construct- ing roads, leasing lands and mines, establishing steam<hip lines, No power is reserved to amend the charter without the Om the lands adjacent to the Chiriqat Lagoon, equt dis. ° ay tant from San Juan and A«pinwall, coal was found thirty years ago, and by some of the Sosbpene there has been used for that length of time in Mapa by Several examinations been made by tical experience, the on of a conviction that the ible.
