I therefore adore the country and its concomitants at this season, 1 had heard a great deal of the beauty of Lake Mahopac, which bas been compared by European tourista to the Lake of Como, the beauties of which haye been sung by the greatest poets. I heard that there was to bea ball at Mahopac, and as ® season of festivity is always charming, especially by the lake and mountain side, I resolved to go and get out my beat dress coat, a quantity of clean hinen, and two pairs of Jauvin’s best white kids, for the momentous occasion. My conveyance was the Harlem to Croton Falls, about fifty miles trom the metropolis. As you know, this road is noted for the magnificence of its equipments; and to show the attention paid to the comfort of traveilers, it 1s stated ag @ fact that two out of three of its passengers ac- tually escape being jolted to pieces. On this occasion the cars were absolutely crammed with ladies, their luggage and their responaibilities. You know that the modern style of female costume is rather extensive, and a car seat is hardly wide enough for a fashionably dressed woman and her incumbrances, which literally encompass her about like the lines of circumval- lation drawn around a fortress. If two of these forts meet in a car aisle, it is necessary that one should be car ried by assault and rushed through. Thereis no such thing as getting around them. Of course with these hooped ar- rangements numerous large trunks are necessary, and a a lady carnot goto the country for relaxation without at least three bonnets, which invoives az equal oumper of boxes; 50 you see, it is no triflmg matter to go to a ball at Lake Mabopac, with a tasbionsble woman. Weil, we were at Crotov Falls at last, and from thence were conveyed by stage to the lake, We stopped first at the oldest house, Baldwin’s, which is @ very queer look- ing place. It ts like some of the old European castiea— @ wing bas been added by every succseding generation, and each differing in style from the other, sothat now the bouze covsists of eix or seven picces scattered slong the lake, full of quaint nocks and corners Baldwin's is 4 superb estab isbment kept iv eplendid style.
