The bulls have even given up all hope, ana zo longer strive to sustain prices. The bears are compelled to enter the market occasionally as buyers, and in this way keep prices up to higher points than would otherwise rule. At the first board to-day, New York Central Railroad declined } per cent; Erie, |; Read- ing Railroad, {; Cleveland and Toledo, j; Panama, 4. Chicago and Rock Island advanced j per cent. Western railroad stocks appear to be better sus- tained than any other. Erie, New York Central and Reading are the heaviest stocks on the list, and much lower prices are looked for in each. There were no sales of Illinois Central Railroad stock to-day. The rights sell daily in small lota at 1l4 percent. The money market continues easy. The supply is fully equal to the demand, and the rates of interest re- main without alteration. Last year the money market commenced contracting im the early part of September, and then it went on at a rapid rate. This year it will, without doubt, move in a similar manner. The banks have already reduced their loans about two millions of dollars; but that is com- paratively moderate. Some of the bank managers look for a redaction in discounts of fall twelve mil- lions of dollars. Barings’ London Circular, received by the Niagara, says that money was in brisk de- mand at 4} a 5 per cent, and that in the absence of business, quotations for American stocks would be ouly nominal. After the adjournment of the board the follow- ing sales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by A. H. Nicolay:— $10,000 Hu: River RR Od as. 2,000 Del., Lackw' 3,000 Fresbing & @R. 24 mortes L. The commissioners of the California war debt give notice to the holders of bonds issued by that State, in payment of expenses incurred in the suppression of Indian hostilities, and to indemnify the State, for which an appropriation was made by act of Congress, approved August 5, 1854, and for which further provision was made by act of Conm- gress, approved August 18, 1856, that the bonds (known as the “ War Bonds of the State of Califor- nia,”) with the coupons attached, must be pre- sented to the commissioners appointed by the State of California to settle the same, at their office in the city of Washington, on or before the first day of September next for payment, after which date all interest on said bonds will be stopped.
