If so, they were permitted to escape. ‘The {ree State men made no attack upon the United States t-oops. This we know. That the block house im possessiou of the dorder mea has fallen, is very likely. But beyond ths, the free State men here observed the law in every respect—taat we consider certain. 4. The free State men have acted purely in self-detence. They were compelied to do what they did to save them- selves, and. therefore could not heip themselyes. The oply Wonder is that they did not act long ago. But thay are on the ground, cautious in action, if determined, and are the best judges of the time for action. That the de- struction of the block houses was a necessity, cannot be —« That they were rightly destroyed, is equally clear, 5. The stories of the seizure or destruction of private property by the free State meu is false. Nut adime was taken belonging to any citizer—not a cent’s worth de- stroyed. This isa pretext o’ the border men to cover exists for any of the securities operated in so largely by the brokers. There is not either the disposition or the means to enter into any of the movements of the Stock Exchange, and that important element in gcttivg up cornering combinations bas ran out. The public are heartily sick of the class of railroad stocks on the market. The gradual depreciation in the actual value of railroad stocks generally has dis- gusted outsiders, and they cannot easily be induced to touch them at any figure. The discount line and de- posits show abcut the samereduction. The contrac- tion is going on at about the same rate realized during the expansion, and we have ne doubt it will continue for some weeks as it has commenced. The specie reserve is much larger than we anticipated. The average of the lust California remittance helped the Jast week’s returns more than those for the week previous. The specie reserve is of very little impor- tance compared with the movement in the discount and deposit departments. The gross earnings of the Chicago, Burlington 433 Broadway.
