Political Gossstp. The follow!ag ise summary, aa near as can be ascer- tained by the meagre returns which have reached us, of the reault of the late State elections :—In Iewa, the Fro- mont state ticket is triumphantly elected, and the State may be safely calculated upon by from five to eight thou- sand majority, In Kentucky, as far ag heard from, the democrata bave made large gains over the Know Nothing vote of last year, and to present indications they will bave a majority of the votes which have beea cast in the State. It should be borne in mind, however, that the democratic tickets at this election have received the German yote, which im November will go nearly una- a'mously for the Fremont electors, This may possibiy secure the State fcrFillmore. In Missouri tt is impossible to tell who is the successful candidate for Governor, Re- turas have beea received from aboutJone-hal’ the State, wach foot up for the three Candidates as follows -—Fwins, Know Nothing, 22,675; Benton, 14,777; Polk, ant!-Beaton dem.,21,¢24. There were some reported majorities which piaced Polk abead, Krom Arkansas we have nothing deSalte, further than that one county has given a Know Noshing majority, In North Carolina there are large democratic gains reported, and the State tas goue demo- crate by probably five or eix thousand majority. Nearly all the votes aunounced in the Buchanan papers a Laying been taken on board steamboats, railroad trains, &e., give the!r favorite candidate a large majority, leaving Fremont the next bighest; and the Know Nothing journals ia ke maaner almost invariably give the Pathfinder a large majority over Buchanaa; eo that if both are taken together, mont 2 sure to bave the highest number of the aggregate vote. It ia impossible to imagine the furore that pervades that body, with but some twelve exceptions, to get hold of the public treasure, and touse the same for local objects ard interests, in many instances without regard to the public benefit generally. To vote away for these objects a half million, more cr less, at a single sitting, has become a daily occurzence. There appears a disposition to make the most of their favorable sitaation, and to deplete the government money boxes of their con- tents before they «top work. ‘There ie scarcely a doubt of the passage of Deu vers’ Pacific railroad and telegraph bill, which will be offered to the Senate as a substitute for the one introduced by Colonel Weller. There is, however, a feeling, which ia on the increase in the Senate against the paseage of any bill for a railroad across the continent, at least for the present. The friends of the Minnesota railroad scheme sre on hand, and determined to force through Congress their mea- sure before the close of the session. The present bill, or one very similar to it, passed both branches of Congress last year, but something unfair being detected in the wording of the bill, it waa recor- sidered, and finally defcated bya very large vote. Under these unfavorable circumstances, it is to be brought forward again, with a demaad from the government of some two or three million acres of land, much of which I understand, has been appre- priated in adyance, as payment to parties engaged to gee it threagh Congress. Ap effort will be made to on it up by Friday, at farthest. e ta! increasing th he pay of the New York In- panied Custome to four dollars Ee raiem, dating back to July, 1855, has been reporied, and by exer. tion and atteation ma; become @ tsw.
