6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, MONEY MaakKT. Soxpay, Aug. 10O—6 P. M. ‘te stock market during the past week has been very mmc depressed. There has been more dispo- sition to sell, and the number of buyers has been gradually growing less. Early iu the week there waa very little business doing, aud holders appeared to be unwilling to submit to toe current prices. More matare reflection seemed to convince many that lower rates would rale, sad realization com- menaced. This inereased the quantity of stock in the market, and in the absence of buyers the mar- ket gradually settled down. Those who have failed to comprehend the danger of their position have now aa opportunity of taking a wider survey of the field Of Operations, amd if they sre not too late in their coucimions, may realize in vime to save serious loases. Tt is folly in these tines to talk about the Sale of town lots applicable to interest Interest received in cash. coated 2EE2 ~ & Crackers, bxa 100 % & Acres. 14,098 constitution vale sold for.. 2,759 free lands sold included > wheatnece 6 prime white, at $1 63: nae, S & actual value of any stock much used in the market for speouiation. I¢ is folly w clk about foreign in- vestments in our securities, so loog as the proceeds .re consumed in silks aod satins. It is abeurd to argue that such sales of st ck» add anything to the gmount of capital employes within our limits. We send ovt our State stocks, our railroad bonds avd ous railroad stecks, and we take dry goods, in payment. We give what represents, for all (ime, owe works of interuui improvement, upon whick the semi-annual interest, or dividend, is regu- larly paid, and get in exchauge a lot of trash which is used ep or thrown aside as useless in less than six montus. In the first seven mouths of the present calendar year, we imported $59,821,116 worth of for- eign d:y goods, against $36,092,073 for the corres- poudiag period last year, suowing an increase in the seven months, or in one season's business, of $23,- 729,045. This is at the rate of nearly one million increase per week. The svrchases of American stocks in this market for foreign account have been paid for out of this im, ortation of foreign dry goods, but probably only to the extent of a small portion of the increased imp: rtution. Fhe stocks paid Tor in this way draw seven, civht, and ten per cent laterest per annam, which imust be remitted semi- anmualy in gold, if necessary, while the silks, satins, (aces, and such trash, receive. in payment for these se- curities, Lave, proba oly, ovg ve.o-e this disappeared, ‘and the demand must be sa‘istied by new importa- tiona, to be paid for in the same way. It is mot at ail surprising to see specie going at the rate of a million dollars per week, or to see large weekly re- mittanees of our stocks, when aarkets can be found here for sixty million doliars worth of foreign dry goods in a period of seven moaths. In the face of such things, no sane man can snticipate a continu- anes of the present financial exse aad abundance. The banks have aidea the present expansion in our foreign trade all in their power. They have in 80 doing run up a discount line of one hundred and twelve million ot dollars, apon the basis of country bank deposits, which every bank manager in the city knows will ultimately be drawn for as soon as the new crops commence moving. The banks bave seized this opportunity to secure good dividends, ‘and are ready to contract at any rate circumstances may requize. The hanks have secured their harvest, and will now look ovt for their -afety. The stock market must be seriously affected py these financial conyuisioas. The banks have loaned largely to the brokers. They have encourayed speculation inevery way, aad afforded every tacility for the hypotheoa- tion of stocks. Their cal: loans are probably at thls moment as large as they have ever before been, and when the contraction commences in ear- heat, we slall see such a panic among holders of certain stocks as few have yet realized. We have no fant to find with the banks for reducing their dis- count Mine? They are compelied to do #0. A con- trary course Is utterly impussivle; but we do blame them for expanding 80 eno: musly, when they knew Vt could uot be otherwise thin temporary; when ihey koew that just as certsin as the season came round—jrst a8 certain as the crops matared—thit just a3 sooa as the harvests were over, the basis of thelr expansicn would rapidly disippear. The banks bave a daty to themselves to perform, and they are therefore regardiess of the inte- rests of stock speculators, So far as in their power tues pfotect the regular merchant, and where necessary sacrifice the operator in stocks. ‘The first mevefheat towards contraction iss restric: tia of caii loans, and the effect is sometimes over. whelming. It is the principal canse of ail our panics, aad its operation freqacatly proves fatal to many a senguine epecuiator. We are, without doubt, upon the eve of a local financial revaisioa. The demand for money is daily increasing, and” the rates of inte- west have! already advanced. The banks, unable to apeet the Cemand upon them for discount, have fore. ‘edtarge fois of paper into the street. The business season is just opening, and last season's liabilities maturing, upon an expansion of bank loans uupre- codented in the history of bauking in this city, Be. fore the fall trade closea there will be stringent times that will try the strength of many houses both inand out of Wall street. ‘The exportation of specie from this port last week was near! y cytes) to the highest point this year. The total for the week was nearly thirteen hundred thou- sand do ars, and for the year more than twenty-one millions of dollars, in about seven mouths. If this is not econgh to satisfy speculators in stocks for a rise that thelr cave Is utterly hopeleas, we give them ap and leave them to their fare. Tne twtal exporta- tien of specie from this port this year will be one- third targer than ever before, while the importations of foreign manufactares wii! exceed im value those © |) previous year. Mr. A. H. Nicolay's regular eekly sale of stocks, bonds. &., will be held on Monday, the 11th inst., at the Merchauts’ Exchange, wt tue asual hour. ‘The anthracite coal trade, the past week, has been tolerally active, thoagh not quite so large as last weck, The demand in still dnll—not equal to the supply: consequently there iv an increased stock at the depots. For the week euding on Thursday isat, the Pending Railroad brought down 46,005 the year to tuat date, 1,251,816 tons, 40 tose to the same time last year, | Navigation brought down, for the Vash ending on ts same day, 25,406 tons, and for the searon, 581,675 tons, against 690,001 tons to the same time las* year. The sbipmenta by the Lebigh Navigation for the werk ondiog Saturday last, were 44,263 tons, aad for the season, 591,89: tons, against 664,751 tons to the corresponding date last year. ‘By these operations, we find tuas the supply from the Scluy!kill, as compared with Inst year, is 147,640 tons. The Mauch Chunk Gazette sets down the decrease, by the Deloware and Hudson canal, at 48,969 tonz by the Pennsylvania Coal Company, 7.505, amd by the Wyoming, about 25,000 tons making the total decrease 224,146 tons. From the Lehigh regions there is an increase; the decrease by fhe canal of £2,898 toma, is made ap by the Lebigh ¥aiiey Rafiroad, and some 90,000 tons over, which, wits 27000 tons from Seranion, gives an aggregate Of 169,146 tons. The Gazelle says:—The dering the remainder of the boating season will not probably much exceed the present deficit. ‘The increased amount to be sent by railroads thé enening winter may be estimated at 150,000 tons, ‘The ‘increased demand for some years past was “phout 600,000 tons per annum; so thatthe for the yeur—say from Jannary, 1466, to April, 1967 —from present appearances, will be over 300,000 tons. The shipments from the Lehigh regions will be reduced this week by the high water.
