6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Faway, Aug. 8—6 P.M. ‘The news from Europe, or something equally in- explicable, produced a temporary inflation in the stock market this morning. At the first board to- day the improvement was pretty general. Illinois Central Bonds advanced } per cent; New York Cen- tral Railroad}; Erie,{; Reading,}; Michigan Central, 4; Michigan Southern, 1; Illinois Central Railroad, 4; Glaveland and Pittsburg, ; Cleveland and Toledo, }; Chicago avd Rock Island, 4; Harlem, }, There was moderate amount of business transacted, and seliers availed themselves ot the little ad- vance to put out better contracts, There was a bear sale of 1,000 shares of New York Central Railroad stock, this morning, at 86] per cent, seller 30 days. We do not see anything encouraging in a financial way in the foreign news. Tt enabled holders to get about a quarter per cent better prices, and many availed themselves of the opportunity. After the board the market was dull, and the buoyancy of the morning was lost. At the secoud board New York Central declined } per cent; Reading, j; Cleveland and Toledo, j; Erie, }. Un- der the present position of our local tinances, an im- provement in prices for stocks is utterly out of the question. The banks of this city are in a state of expansion unprecedented in their history, and it is well kuown that the basis of this expansion is the anusnal large deposits of country bankers, which have accamulated here during the suspension of ‘basiness. As soonas trade becomes active, and the mew crops begin to move, we shall see 4 rapid reduction in these deposits, and a rapid contraction im bank loaas. This is the usual operation of the tall season, and we must soon look for it to commence. This season it is likely to be more rapid and more active than here- tofore, in consequence of the high point of expan- sion the banks of this city have reached. Either the country banks must permit their large balances to remain ide in our city banks throughout the active season we are about entering, aud let the farmers move their crops without help, or the banks of this city must disgorge these deposits and contract their enormous line of discounts. One or the other of these things must be realized. The natural course is a withdrawal of deposits and a contraction of loans, and there are po indications at present that there will Le apy devia ion from the regular move- ments. Heavy lots were lying iu New York and here limited at $1 per acre, and the market having reaches that pot daring the past few days, this fact, taken in connection with the parvage through the House of another bill granting one anda baif milion of acres of land for railroad purposes bas Drovght about the sudden decline. Most of the deal- ers here and ja New York refused to bny yesterday, and others purchased reluctantly at quotations, The bill penne before Con, to make land warrants receira le for the reserved sections on railroad grants ani at public salee, was intended to enhaace the value of war- rants: bot it le now beliewed by the friends of the mea- sure that 1 cannot pase thie session. Tne confident belief that the b.!/ would become a law gave great firmness to the market: but holders now yielding to the general opiu- son that the bil! will fail, are throwiwg their warrants on the market, which tends also to depress prices; and as the demand West will continue to fail off unul the lands im Kansas aud Nebraska are )rought ini the market, aod the reserved cotions on railroads are restored, we look for a further decline. It may be in the recollection of such of our read- ere as take an interest in life insurance companies— and they ace a large number—that last Febraary a was presented to the Senate at Albany, from some few of the members of the Matual Life lasur- ance Company, complaining to a certain extent of the management of the company, and praying for ‘au inquiry into its affairs. The Senate declined to appoint the committee—the general impres- sion being that mo ease was made out in the petition to warrant legislative interference. The trosteees of the company, however, were rensitive at any {inesinnation being made agsinst the integrity of the management, and they presented a counter-petition, denying the trath of the representations made Ly the first petitioners, and “inviting a thorough investigation, pledging themselves to sfford every possible facility for con- dvcting a ‘and then the trustees endeavored to procure aa amendmett to the charter of the company, provid- ing for a jndicial examination of its affairs annually. This amendment passed the Senate, and went to a third reading ia the House, but was laid over among the other measures left unilaisled at the close of the session. Under these circumstances the trustees of the company, oppearing to ‘cel the importance of spee- dily quieting any doubts that might have been raised by the adverse petition, and showing, no doubt, a landable anxiety, as the responsible ma- pagers of 80 important a moneyed institution, to meet any charges made against them promptly, took the only coarse that would seem to have been opea to them, and by a resolution of their body, pasegd on the 15th of April, selected the Hon. Luther Bra- dish, the Hon. Wiliam Kent, and Professor Henry James Anderson, LL.D., as examiners, to make *‘aueb fell examinationin to the affairs of the com- pany, the legality, fidelity, ability and method of its administration by its officers and trustees, and par- tieulariy since the commencement of its fiscal year in 1865, as would enable them to report to the policy holders of the corporation its past ‘and = prerent condition on these points.” It appears from thie report of the examiners that Mr. Blent, counsel to the company, who was active in preferring the petition against it, and the othe gentiemen who acted with him in that matter, were invited to attend the meetings of the examiners, ocd that Mr. Blunt did attend those meetings and preferred its complaints to the examiners. We have g'snced through the report, which is rather volaminvv. and are pleased to find that the opinion of the examiners is completely in favor of the in- tegrity of the company, in ite ecndition and man- ‘agement, in ali respecte. We say we are pleased at this, and for this reason—that we are aware a large number of our most respectable citizens are deeply interested in the well being of this company, and that it is of great moment to the public generally that the affoirs of the most extensive life insurance company in the country should be entirely above reprea:b. ‘The examiners are men of irreproachable cliara> ter, and their opinions are entitled to the fullest confidence. It is impoesible for ux, in a cursory no hoe of their report, to follow them throuzl all the deteile of their investigation. We are gratified ty that the assets of the company are abun dant, and that the accumulated capital of #9,167,555 96 is nected on mor gaged property of more thin grice and » half the value of the amount. As compared with the month of June last year, there is an increase of $4,639. The most surprising feature of the re- port, probably, is the decrease of the receipts from trayel, which have fallen off abont $2,500. The ex- pectation has always been that travel by the north- ern railroad route, from Philadelphia to Western New York, would steadily increase, and thus add largely to the revenues of the Reading Railroad, which comes in for its full share, being one of the principal links in the great chain of roads to the lakes. Whether there has been less travel this sum- mer than last, or that the route on trial is not popu- lar, we are not at present informed. The folowing figures show the receipts on the Morris Caval for the week and season ending August 2, compared with the corresponding time last year:— Total to July 28, 1506 Week ending Augu Total to J Week ending Aug) uly 28, 1585 ust 4 The Council of the Board of Trade of Montreal have decided on adjusting the standard of brands of flour under the act of last session. These they have placed high: or, in other words, have gone back to the old high standard. They have made one new brand, viz: “Fancy,” ranking between No. 1 superfine and extra. The receipts of lumber at Albany by canal, from the opening of navigation to the 30th ult., ia the years named, were as follows:— 3 i522 85,148,504 59, 51 ‘3 31,739, 5) Here is is sp a falling off thus far this season in comparison with the light receipts last year, of boards and scan‘ling, amcunting to over 7,909,000 feet. The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for constunption, for warehouse, and also the withdraw- als from warehouse, during the week ending and in- clading Thursday, August 7, 1356:— ww Foaias Dat Gouna, Briaed for Consumption. Gani. Manufactures of woot Do. cotton tne week. ehstett] The business in the dry goods trade has exhibited some more animation the present week than it did the last. Merchants from the South and Southwest bave appeared in considerable force, and houses en- gaged in the trade in that direction are doing a fair business. Some merchants have also appeared from the Western States and from the western part of New York. The wholesale clothing establishments have been velling the present week quite frecly supplies of goods suitable to the fall and winter trade at the South and West. Many of these houses have found themselves with an overstock of summer clothing, and, as fashions change, it becomes unsafe to hold them over to another season; hence they have for twoor three wecks past been working them off at very redaced prices. The manufacture and sale of clothing in New York has been every year on the increase, and many country merchanta—and eape- cially at the South—supply themselves with ready made clothing of the better descriptions, instead of parchasing cloths to the same extent as formerly, to be made op in the interior. The event of the week was the Isrge auction sale, held to-day, of French Merino cloths, cachemire do., grosse and bombazines, of the importation of Messrs, Beakard & Hatton, by Mesers. Wilmerding & Mount, and at eight months credit. It was the first sale of the kind this season, and earlier than usual. The liberal credit, with the kind of goods offered, drew together a good and spirited company for the season of the year; and it was seid that prices were well sustained and quite satisfactory, while bat few packages were passed. We observe the auction business has been re-opened in carpets, and reveral sales are advertised, inclad- ing those of Haggerty, Jones & Co. The late in- telligence from Manchester representa trade to be good and prices generally firm. Ad- vices from France, also, represented the prices of staple French goods to be well main- tained, with few American orders in hand for exe- cution at Lyons. Letters from France, also, gene- rally agree that the silk crop in the south of France, ond in parts of Maly and Spain, will be from one third to one-balf short. This, however, may be an exaggerated view of the case. Domestic goods have exhibited but little change during the past week. The large importations have the tendency to keep down prices in the present limited advance made in the fail trade. The fall tide of few weeks hence may tend to advance prices. The export trade was Nght last week, the shipments being confined to small lots taken for Australia and Sooth America. There was at the close more in- quiry for China. Brown sheetings and shirtings were firm. Hearty goods wore at sc. and light at To. a 74c. Bleached gooda were firm for heavy, and dull for light. Prints, cinghams and maslin de laines were without change of moment. Staple woollen goods and mixed woolen and cotton fabrics were firm. Planvels and blenkets especiaily were firm, and stocks light. HOLIDAY FOR VEGETARIANS. Vegetables are coming up. It would do Mr. Gra- ham or Dr. Alcott’s heart good to take a walk any fine morning through Washington market, see the baekets and barrels of fresh apples and pears, feast their eyes on the piles of rich tomatoes, jalcy squashes, and tempting melons, and wind up with a dish of those black whortleberries, swimming in a sea of imaginary milk. Fruits and vegetables are making their appearance in great profusion ; pota- toes are fine and sound—no signs of the rot that wiseacres prophesied was the undoubted symptom of their final dying out. Peas have gone out, but in their place we have string beans and fine limas, which good housekeepers know how to value: squashes also are abundant, white, striped, and the fine marrow, which make delicious pies Egg plants— sometimes called oyster plant —have made incir appearance, good and cheap. Few appreciate the quality of this vegetable, and none su‘fers more from improper cookiag. For the benefit of those who are not “posted,” we subjoin a recipe, and ad- viee all who like fried oysters to try it.
