NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Wronespay, August 6—6 P. M. "he stock market looks blue enough. Nothiag can be said in its favor, and it is so much depressed that it would only be adding insult to injury to say anything against it. The tendency downward is strong enough without giving ita greater impetus. At the first board to-day Virginia 6's declined } per cent; Mlinois Central bonds, 3; New York Central Railroad, |; Erie, }; Harlem, j; Michigan Central, 4; Michigan Southern, }; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1; Galena and Chicago, }; Cleveland and Toledo, ; and Rock Island, }. There were large trans- actions in all the leading stocks, and at the close lower prices ruled. Stozks are pressing for sale in large lots, and holders appear to be more desirous of realizing than we have noticed for many weeks. The inflated condition of the banks is creating uneasiness in the public mind, and the disposition is to draw in private operations and await the result: We are not surprised at this movement. It is a dan- gerous time to be much involved in speculations. The banks are very uncertain, treacherous things to depend upon, and frequently leave those who trust to them in the lurch, after having furnished the means to inflate prices and induce parties to pur- chase. They frequently lead stock speculators into the ditch, and then leave them there to get out the best way they can. They are nearly ready to play that game over again, and they will some day pro- duce a panic in Wall street by suddenly calling in sell. A more reget apg Baiecly 75 ba mercantile classes stocks to dispose of them, Fe supply ia likely to be largely increased from gource. At the second board there was an active market. ‘The gales of Erie were large at prices current in the morning. New York Central Railroad fell off } per cent; Cleveland and Pittsburg, }; Michigan Southern, }; Chicago and Rock Island, j; Hudson River, 4. Reading closed without change. The steamship Persia, from this port for Liverpool to-day, carried out $1,033,634 98 in specie. The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as fol- 932,430 95 sources... - A.H. New Yorn, July 26 ‘The quantity and valne of domestic cotton goods exported from Boston during the month of July and the previous six months this year, compared with the same time in the previoustwo years, were as fol- lows:— mi Sutrimets or Corroy Goons yrow Dostow Porkages i Folw 780 88 043 61 10,883 83 7.840 36 5,987 41 570 00 9,061 90 4,400 24 sts 202,566 81 $1,383,082 99 840,148 73 1,087,004 08 The cotton goods trade baa continued quite active, and a very good busineas has been done, both for export and cousumption. The stock of ali desirable goods is quite small for the season, aud as many of the mills are now short of water, the production is also comparatively small. Prices for all deserip- tions are very firm, and have rather an upward ten- dene: eee dlsamees of the great lakes is one of the most remarkable facta of the day. We learn that no less than five steamers, twen’y pro- pellers, four barks, one brig, and one hundred end two schooners, have already been launched from the Western shipyards since the commencement of 1856. The size of the steamers ranges from 78 to 1,800 tons; of the propellers, from 263 to 800, with the exception of three, which are propellers of less size; the barks, from 380 to 603; and the schooners, from 50 to 531, The total steam tonnage of the vessels built was 12,922; sail tonnage, 33,441, A large number of vessels are now on the stocks. A very small proportion of the vessels named were launched on the Canada side, including one steamer at Toronto and oue propeller at Kingston. The whole number of banks in Wis:onsin doing business under the general banking law on Thurs- day, July 31, 1856, was thirty-eight. The total amount of circulating notes issued to such banka, outstanding on that day, was $1,443,215, for the redemption of which securities have been aasigned in trust to the State Treasurer amounting in the aggregate to $1,574,000, as follows: — Wisconsty State Stocks 7 and Xenia Railroad for July, 1956, were. For same time in 1855........5 Tucrease nearly 56 per cent....... oe $24,556 O4 The report of the Toltec Copper Company of Lake Superior haa been issued, from which we extract the following statement of asaets and liabilities, July 1:— +» $1,721 49 + 422 8 ‘The earnings of the Little Miami and as Assets. Our calculation is, that this amount will be ample to conduct the work unti! the close of navigation, when we hope and expect thata decide:tiy better azpect will be given to the enterprise Already tbe mine has coums upon a larger prodact. while, at the same time, portions of the vein show con- sider able improvement, and it is certainly not unreasoua. ble to took ‘or continued favorable progress. The stockholders of the Forest Copper Mining Company have been suddenly called upon to pay up the debts of that mine, under the laws of the State of Michigan, which make stockholders individually fable for corporation debts. This has caused a good deal of uneasiness on the part of the holders of the stock, whieh cannot now be sold for ninepence a rbare, although three years ago it commanded #15 per share. This company has a bonded as well asa floating debt, contracted in the developement of its mineral lands. Colonel Ball's machine may yet be able to extricate it from its pecuniary troubles, and open the door to future success. The Boston Courier of the 4th inst. says:— The Mi higan Central Railroad \s dotng a heavy and ex pensive freight business with its single track, and this accounts im part for the steady acrease of its ‘construc tion account,” wh.-b should be fairly charged to expenses and deterioration, and deducted from the dividends—to pay which the money bas to be borrowed from time to time. The of the property ls very large, aad millions have yet to be expended in the construction of a second track. The stock stands at 14; bid and @2 asked, which is a good deal more than it |: worth, compared with the more conservative railroads in In addition to the above iloating debt of urtber sum of $900 bas since aceums- ‘rom the amount borrowed to pay the receat Ai) aewd of & per cout Ou the $6,(U0 000 of share capital. The Torunto Giobe contains the following article in relation to the construction of the Sodus Bay Railroad, a point on Lake Ontario, about fourteen miles west of Oswego: — Sodus Bay i descrived as the best natural barbor on the south coast of Lake (utario, and lying between Ro chester and Oswego, is the nearest point om the lake to two of the great Allantic shipping ports, New York and Philadelphia. Only thirty-five mies of rail are required ib the main iron thoroughfare leading di named city. The Philadelphia Board of Trade are wteresting themselves very Beartily in the completion of the easiest access to the lakes by the construction of thie, the last link in the ehain. In ng #0, they are of course actuated by the desire to firect the course of the commerce of the Northwest much a& possible to their own city reasops why the pesple of Toronto also should be induced to lend the project a helping hand. that we must be ver: ng which tends to the ports on the south side, opposite to im the seme mapoer a the merchants of Oswego Wn prosperity must wo us and Rochester feel that ther @ large extent go band io hand with that of Canada. ‘and therefore readily encourage the project of the aor: an ship canal. which, when completed, will bring down Syaet emoust ot tbe produc the West, to be unship ped at the Southern ports, so we mast feel that our pr: rity largely depends ou the extent of the faciliti forded by those ports for receiving and carrying »way the traffic. w aconsideration of those facilities wii attract to Lake Ontario rather than to Erie. We sball give a few figures to show the amazingly rapid rate at which the commerce of the West is grow ng, ahd the importance of sparing no eilort, in this period of infancy, when its course may eastiy be bent, to secre ‘or lorouto her fair share of the profits to be reaped by its carriers. We begin with the trade of Mii waukiema cty with which, ia commercial matters, we bave already establiched a very close alliance. The bumber of bushels of wheat exported from Milwankie in 1862 Was 428,512; 1.181.009 in 1860; 2,052,816 in 1954 and po jess than 4,028 ve In other worda, the export: of wheat {rom Miwaukie have increased in four years by & thousand per cont. Of this great trade mterio is beginning to receive mote than her former share, While the receipts of grain at Duffalo only increased from 18 52: shela in 1864 to 10,798, 473 In 1865, or about 6 per in the same period inctessed from or about 70 per cent.
