8 NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, JULY 26, 1856. Political Gossip. The Washington papers, which in the Jackson and Van Buren campaigns were the fouotaia head of all the political strea: s which spread throughoet the country, have collapsed and lost their power and influence for good or bad. The Union is dull, beavy and stale, with no heart, no energy and no bition; the old Jntelligencer is as dumb as one of Goy. Wise's tribute paying oysters; and the mos. quito fleet, composed ot the Organ, Sentinel and Star, are seldom heard of, and never heeded out- side the precincts of the capital. ‘The Richmond papers, with knives well sharpen- ed, are stabbing away at each other in true brigand style, and giving some awful thrusts at the respective parties to which they are opposed. The Enquirer says the Filimore defection in the South is going on to an estent which alarms the Know Notbings, and will soon place them hers du combat. The Whig, on the other hand, takes ap the articleg of the Enquirer, reading the demo- cratic members of Congress who voted for the passage of the river and harbor improvement bills, out of the party, and says that the profligacy of the nigger driving democracy is thereby admit- ted and denounced, that the Cincinnati platform is already confessed to be repudiated, and that demo- cracy is nothing but a cheat anda humbug. The struggle is becoming desperate in Virginia. The campaign in the South is beginning to show some pretty hard fighting, and is carried on be- tweem the Know Nothings and the nigger driving democracy, while the real friends of Fremont in that section are at present compelled to do battle under the banner of Fillmore. (nthe North and East the war is waged between the Fremont and Buchanan forces, with here and there a Nnow Nothing encampment, made up of followers isa transition state for the Northwest. There is no opposition, the ranks of the Constitutional Fremont party presenting a too formidable appearance to justify an attack. Tae Philadelphia Know Nothing Convention which nominated Millard Fillmore and Andrew J. Doneison, with a full representation, should have been composed of two hundred and ninety-six mem- bers; but there were five Southern and ten Northern States which were not represented, and the total Bumber of Northern delegates in the convention when the nominations were made amounted 60 only forty-nine. Who is the sectional candidate for the Presidency ? . Ataspontaneous gathering of the voters of the village of Thompson, Long Island, last week, a vote for Presidential preferences was taken, and the whole company, numbering thirty, declared in favor of Fremont. There are but thirty legal voters in the village. ‘The Mayor of Buffalo has beea requested to re- eign his office, by a vote of fifteen members of the Common Council, because he has expressed his pre- ference for Fremont for the Presidency. The hard delegate from Washington county to the State Convention is instructed to vote for Hon. David L. Seymour as the candidate for Governor. It is said that both the hard and the soft delegates to the State Conventions from Kings county are in favor of Hon. John Vanderbilt, of Brooklyn, for Governor. The Columbian South Carolinian ia rejoiced that ‘the South is at last united. It says:— By reterence to the vote on the resolution relating to Fon. PS. Brooks, it wilt be seen that it is the most united ccti@al vote on the of the South evar given—but es from sla ing Staten (Hoamn, of Mary- ad Cullen, of Delaware ) voting against Mr. Brooks We are «iad to see something has occurred to unite the Soutia, and hope they will coatinue #0, A feer bas been expressed that there will not be democrats enough left in Vermont for seed after the Presidential election. There is great enthusiasm and carnestness for Fremont and Dayton among the Germans of Boaton. ‘The Anzeiger dee Nerdens, the German paper pab- lished there, a paper which has heretofore supported ‘Yee Pierce administration—has come out in support of the Philadelphia nominations ard piatiorm. ‘The democratic papers having circulated a report that Hon. Elisha Whittlesey had boldly and frankly come out in favor of the nigger driving democracy, that gentleman writes as follows:— Permit me to say that, since I have held office. it has been my aim to practice most rigidly what was professed to he the tru: doctrine by the democrats in 1826. ana by the whigs in 1810, that no subordinate oflicer in any de- partment should interfere in the State or the Presidential elect.ons The call for a convention of the constitational Fremont party of Connecticut, to be held at Hart- ford on the Sth of August, has over seven hundred signatures. More than one-half of the twenty sign- ing in one town were formerly members of the de- mocrstic party, and all prominent men. It is em- phaticaily a movement of the people. The Hartford Press says a bookselling house in that city, few days since, sent out a specimen copy of the “Life of Bachanan,” by Mr. Horton, to regular customer in a manufacturing village of that State. It was returned the next day with the following message:—There is no demand for this here, bat if you have the ‘ Life of Fremont,’ of any edition, send on as many copies as you choose.” The New Orleans Delta (independent) says:— We doubt much if the Sou will consent to be a par- sive instrument in the bands of thse who are now fore dow ing avd tracing out the policy of Mr. Buchanan's (ministration, The voice of the South will soon be beard | poo this vital question, and ber influence soundly felt, un\ees proper guarantees be given, and the mon strous doctrme of * squatter sovereignty”? totally repu diated. The Philadelphia Bulletin (independent) says the public is very much interested to know whether Mr. Buchanan will withdraw. The Presidential contest is narrowing down very materially. only four candidates remaining in the field, viz.— Mesars Fillmore, Fremont, Buchanan and (orritt Smith. Of these four only two seem to excite any enthusiasm, and these are Messrs. Fremont and Fill- more. There isa singular dalneas; among the sup- porters of Mr. Buchanan. They carry on the can- vass as a mere work of partisan drill, the rank and file saying nothing, while the leaders give the or- ders, which are obeyed with little alacrity. The truth ‘is that the cold, selfish, calculating charac- ter of Mr. Buchanan is the last in the world to excite euthosiasm. A man without impnlee, ener- @y, independence or warmth, can never stimulate personal interest; and there can be no enthusiasm for one who has so littie of the magnetiam that tells apon popular feeling. MThe Herkimer county Democrat—hitherto Know Nothing, puts ap the names of Bachanan and Breck- inridge. One of the “signs” in favor of Fremont's election is, that, since the retiring of Andrew Jackson, no political party has had control of the government more than one term. Jackson was succeeded by Van Buren in 1896; then the whigs came into power and elected Harrison in 1340; then the democrats were victorious and Polk was chosen over Clay in 1844: next Taylor, whig, elected over Cass in 1548, and in 1452 Pierce defeated Scott. A Fremont Clab has been organized at Dobbs’ Ferry, Westchester county, which haa elected the following officers:—M. K. Cousins, Presideet; C. W. Thomas, G. Conklin, C. T. Platt, Vice Presidents; C. MoCutchen, Secretary; W. A. Hale, 2 += z = i eof fe ofa erie se Fr : i 7 ga LE zi = es HH Personal Inte! The Secretary of theNavy, who been absent from Washington for the last four or tive days, bas returned and resumed his avties. ‘the Niagara Falls Gazette, of the 264 inst., eays :—Mr. Fillmore has been spending a number of days at the Moa- teogle Hotel, as the guest of Gen. Stuart. Yesterday, by invitation of the -proprictors of the Cataract House, Mr. Fillmore, with Gen. Stuart and lady, John T. Bush, aud other invited guests, dined at the Cataract. Gen. Park- hurst Whitney occupied @ seat atthe head of the table, with Me» F.on his right and Gen. 8. on his left. Among | others present we noticed Hon. Christopher Morgan aad Mr. Bratehford, of Auburn, who, although not the polit: cal friends of Mr. Fillmore, were not backward ia show: jug their respect for the man, and assisting to enliven the cecagion with wit and repartee. The affair, which by the by vas ratber private than otherwise, was very | ne=sagy - Mr, Fillmore left for Butfalo in the’ afternoon ain. ‘The Paris correspondent of the London Tmes, writi on the 2th of June, says :—The Emperor, who bas worl ed very hard for some months past, ‘eels the necessity of ashori but absolute reepite from nis labors, He has also suilered trom occasional attacks of gout, and a change of Our Boston Corespondence. The Laat Fugitive Slave Excitement—VWhig Meet- ing in Fancuil Hall—The Sumner Sympathy— The Brooks and Burlingame Controvers: The monotony of this city was broken during the last week by one or two occurrences of public inte- rest. On Wednesday, considerable excitement was created in Court square and its adjacencies by the arrest and examination of a fugitive slave, called James Johnson, who had eseaped from Mobile in the bark Growler. A large number of our citizens were on the qui vive. Visions of a mob, a court house surrounded by military, a protracted legal struggle, and a rendition of the fugitive, arose in the minds of thousands. The Vigilance Committee who manage the underground railroad, were burning to bring to a practioal test the efficacy of the Personal Liberty Our Frankfort (Ky.) Correspondence. Here, away down in old Kentuck, the greatest | enthusiagm prevails already upon the Presidential question, and bets are running very high. To-day, in Lexington, $3,000 was put up upon the final re- sult between Buchanan *nd Fillmore. Fremont has very many strong advocates, but the whigs give in to Fillmore carrying the State. The democrats are also very sanguine of success. A great hail storm passed in a circuit of about six miles to the north and east of Lexington on Thurs- day last, at 3 P. M., wilh the thermometer up to 92 degrees. The cornfields were levelled to the ground, and the leaves badly cut. The corn crop is esti- MABITINE INTELLIG“ACE. FOR CALIFORNIA, ETO.
