If a sudden affray arose between the accused and the deceased, and afterwards several other person: terfered to assist the deceased, and s these assailants the defend- ant was borne down and beaten, and had rea- son to believe that he was in imminent danger of great bodily harm, from which he could not safely escape, and while in this position fired the pistol by which the deceased was killed, it was, in judgment of law, a case of excusable homicide, and it is immaterial, in the absence of premeditation and malice, by whom the affray wascommenced. And it i also not material that the accused might have escaped before the imminent peril came upon him, if, at the time the peril came, he fad reason to believe himself in imminent peril of life, or of great bodily harm, and when he fired the pistol he could not safely escape.”’ The branch of the instruction asked which I will first notice is, whether it is material who struck the first blow under the circum- stances in evidence. Dr. Maclay was President of the American (Baptist) Bible Union, to which he succeeded upon the death of Rev. Dr. Cone. For ——— he felt com- pelled to resign ; though it appears that in various capacities he has rendaped im services in behalf of Bible “‘revision,”” and raised upwards of $20,000 in furtherance of this object. Having been asked for an expla- nation of the step now taken, the reply ap- pears in the form of a pamphlet of twenty pages under his own signature. The disclo- ey made are certainly very extraordinary. ir. Bays: On being elected President of the Union, in October, 1855, I found myself in possession of more direct and unqualified ; and, under these circumstances, I felt the im- — ae more jicularly ac- uainted wii operations of the = then, for the first time, same nen pos dye revisors were; and found, to my astonish ment, that instead of there having been about forty individuals actively e in transia- ting the New Testament, as I had understood from the Secretary, and had often stated, there had not been more than twenty-three or twenty-four. Instead of all these being com- petent scholars, as I had supposed, and as the plan of the Union required, and as is ofter stated in the official documents of the Union, some of them unquestionably lacked the es- sential qualifications of a translator. Another alleged error with respect to the management of the association relates to the mode of paying the translators. Dr. Maclay states that Professor Conant, of Rochester, has contract with the society “which se- cures to him, in addition to a salary of $1,200 from the Theological Seminary, $2,000 a year for the portion of time not uired in his professional duties, tr// he shall have com- pleted the Old Testament, with a copyright interest, and a percentage on the future sales of his translation, when publighed with notes.’” itis added, that Professor Conant already received three years’ salary or $6,000, and has not completed one of the books of the Old Testament. Objection is also made to the manner in which the work of revision has been ‘orm- ed In addition to “shocking translations,” the misguided hand of the reviser had been rashly laid on the original text. Dr. Maclay Says: n one book, which came under my wbeer- yation, after it had been stereotyped, a cur- sory examination showed that the reviser had deviated from the “received Greek text” in two places, by adding something to it; in twelve places, by substituting something for it; in twenty-two places, in rejecting some- thing of it. And one of the portions, rejected as spurious, embraced twelve consecutive verses! In another place, the following pas- sage is cast out of the Bible : ~ For an angel went down at a certain sea- son into the pool, and troubled the water; whosoever then first r the troubling of the water stepped in, was made whole of what- soever disease he bad.’’ Where the common version reads, “That whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life,” the received Greek text has been so critically edited that. in the revised English version, the same ee. reads thus: * That every one that believeth on him may have eternal And the rejection of “Jesus,” “Jobn,”’ * and “‘Amen,”’ are specimens of ler changes, which have resulted from this revision of the Greek text.
