8 a SUMMER RETREATS. Nevesink Highlands. ‘THOMPSON'S ATLANTIC PaviLion, Higianps oF Nevesinx, N.J., July 22, 1866. Glorious Pictorial Grouping—A Jersey Beautyepot —Com. Stockton's Liitle Empire Good for Some. thing—Our Host Thompson and his Good Points — Wonderful Virtues of Fresh Air, Sait Water, Exercise and Good Eating—Some of the Myate- ries of the Dear Creatures,” and a Variety of Curious Observations. As a general thing, the Great Creator has not made New Jersey the most attractive part of the universe. Indeed, we regret to say that there is a prevalent idea among all outside | orbarians that the littie empire which Commodore Stockton carries in his breeches pocket is the tag end of creation. Here and there, however, upon the homely face of “ the Jarsies,” there is a beauty spot worth lookiag at and worth remenbering, and this is one of them. It is Point-iook-ovt aud Point-took-in, for, inland ard oceanward, from this poiat and these heights, the view is grand, glorious and magnificent. A range of low wooded movatains sweeps around the sinuosities of the sea from the northward, and just here they impinge upon the ocean, and at right angles turn westward aiong the sbores of tae roman- tic estuary into the interior. This pavilion, upon the instep of the mountain, like a shining buckle upon a lady's slipper, is an ottractive feature in this picturesque landscape. Below us is the remarkable Ocean inlet of Shrewsbury river, calm as a moun- ‘tain lake, divided from the tremendous surging shore line of the main ocean by a mere seivage of sand. To the left we command a view of Saody Mook, Staten Island, the windy waste of Coney Island. and in the misty distonce a glimmer, like an Egyp- tian mirage, of the ¢ at imperial city of this West- ern world. In front is the eterna! Atiantic, and in the rear and all aronnd us, a conglomeration of Dill and valleys; and lake-like expanses of water and islands, forming a tout ensemble of the most com- prebensive variety and dimensions, Hail, Co- Jumbia! We must confess, then, that the Great Architect has done everything for this corner of Commodore Stockton’s breeches pocket empire, whatever may be the short comings of the fussy Little emperor and his loyal subjects. The sandiate of this iniet have heretofore rendered the approach to this locality by water as uncertain as a railroad breakfast; but of late years it has been discovered that by taking ad- vantage of the tide, steamboats may come and go, loaded down with passengers, potatoes, eggs, tur- nips, fish, clams, and huckleberries. By-the-by, the huckleberry ranks among the most productive staples of these regiona, and next in importaace is the blackberry. The quantities of the-e berries daily carried up to New York are astonishing. They are no great proofs of the fertility of the soil, but I will venture the opinion that the yeaily sales of nig gers in Governor Wise’s own county of Accomac do not much exceed the annual gross receipts from the huckleberries and biackverries of a district here, of say forty miles square. Where do ail the old womeu aud children come from re- quired to pick these berries? No mai»r—the fruit is and sold, and the city of New York ——- She pays ‘or everything, and for miles around her, as here, the coantry and the people are enriched and decorated from her munificence, Establish here a house that will cost two lmodred thousand dollars to build it, cover this river with fancy sail Loate and floating path houses, establish an | oarly communication with New York by ratiroad and yy ght draught pleasure steamers, erect pavilions in the woods for picnics, and provide carriages and for inland ex arsions by the score, and New York will pay the expenses.
