Monpay, July 21—6 P.M. ‘Ther was a very dull market at the first board to- day. 11 e entire transactions were hardly equal, in amount, to those of asecond board in active times. ‘The ales of all stocks do not sum up more than five theurand shares, and we have known more than double that quantity of one leading stock to be sold at the morning board within the past sixty days. The hot weather has driven many operators into the country, which may account for part of the inac- tivity. During the past sixty or ninety days stocks have been accumulating in the hands of operators for a rise, at steadily advanciug prices for certain classes. So long as these purchases were going on, 80 long prices were maintained, and in some an ad- vance created; but whenever an attempt was made to realize the advance in market value, prices ran rapidly down, and the supply of stock bad to be withdrawn to prevent sacrifices. The buying bas all been among the brokers. Outaiders have not taken hold to any extent, and there are no indications of a demand from that soarce. At the first board today, New York Cen tral Railroad advanced } percent ; Panama Railroad 4. Michigan Southern sold at 924, dividend of 5 per cent, payable on the Ist of August, off. This is equal to 973 per cent, being an advance of j per cent on Saturday's prices. Illinois Central Railroad stock is gradually settling down. The advance was too rapid to be sustained. The issue of a new class of bends has doubtless had an unfavorable effect. ‘The Company has merely anti:ipated the asseasment upon the privilege stock, to supply the means to complete the Chicago branch It insures a more speedy completion of the entire line, and affords greater facilities for traffic. The eompany will be compeiled to make sacrifices to do this, but its busi- ness is increasing so rapidly that the result will jus- tify the additional expense. As soon as advices reach Europe of the advance in the market value in both bondsand stock of this company, we have no doubt new and larger osders will be sent out to pur- chase at the current price, whatever it may be. After the adjournment of the board, the following sales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by Albert H. Nicolay:— $15,000 F ushing Railroad Ist mortgage. . Among other securities there will be offered a large parcel of St. Louis six per cent bonds, which are the remainder of the issues of the city and county for railroad purposes. An ample sinking fund is pro- vided for the redemption of these securities before maturity; and the city and county are precinded from iasuing any further amount of bonds for railroad purposes. ‘ At the second board there was @ very dull, heavy market. Prices remain without alteration, and the demand is more limited than ve have known for many weeks. At the board this afternoon, 72 per cent, buyer 60 days was bid for La Crosse and Mil- waukie Railroad stock, and 71 per cent, cash, with- out finding sellers. The asking price was 75 per ceat, cash. There were several orders in the street from outsiders, but none of them were filled. ‘The steamship Africa, from this port for Liver- pool, on Wednesday, will take out about one million of dollars in gold, and the steamship Fulton, from this port on Saturday, for Southampton and Havre, will take out nearly as much more. We shall have no further supplies from California until the last of next week. ‘The receipts of the Ohio and Pennalvania Railroad were: — Passenger receipts for Juae Freight receipts for June.... . $8,663 enuseun The earnings of the N w York Central Railrosd aime Tea sa ae 1566. 1608.... The balance, amounting to $3,114,183 19, a large portion of which is carried at 5 per cent, is the amount to be provided for from the earnings of the company. During the six months of the present year, ending on the Ist of Jane, notwithstanding the total cessation of business for vearly three months in the winter, and the want of funds on the part of dealers to far- mish orders in the early part of the season, the net earnings of the road were $50,000 over the interest on the debt, and a dividend of 4 per cent on the stock of the company. Up to the 3d of the present mon‘h the deficiency in the ton- nage was reduced to 88,000 tons; and at the present weekly average the entire tonnage of 1855 will be exceeded about 60,000 tons. But as the capacity of the machinery is over 10,000 tons per week more, and from the increase on the outside business, it is certain the gross receipts will be greater in 1855. Last year the receipts from coal were $410,272 02, or 12} per cent over the previous year; on merchandise, $94,224 59, or 41 per cent increase; and on passen- gers, $29,583 85, or 12 per cent over 1855, With these facts before as, and with the certainty that the position of the road, with its connections, places it beyond competion, we must at once realize its value. Ata fair estimate of the business of the road for 1356, we cannot recognize less than $4,500,000 as the gross receipts. ‘The annva! meeting of the Penobscot and Kenne- bec Railroad was held at Bangor on the 8th inst. The cost of the road to the 3ist of May, including equipment, was stated at $1,723,408 61, to which is added an estimated further expenditure of $66,971, making a total of $1,789,279 61.
