Some of the Southern journals take it very much to heart that Col. Fremont, who was educated at the South, should be the republican candidate for the Presidency, The Columbia Sowh Carolinian says :—In early life bis talents were nurtured by gentle hand—in approaching manhood he was upheki by generous and patriotic men—in the developement of be genius South Caro- lina encouraged him by . her * { support, and = pre- semted him with a sword, in token of her appre- ciation of the use he bad made of his talents and the energy and force of character he had exhibited in Prince John’s turn will come his daring efforts to add to the science of his country.. And he stands before the world as an avowed matricide —as the representative of principles and passions foreign to our nature, and destructive of all the best feelings of man instilled in him in his childhood aad early youth, and he is eagerly sought for by his new adherents, be- cause he is a traitor! Like Judas, he has been seduced, and sold himself for a price. A Fremont ratification meeting in Greensburg, In- diana, at which no Jess than five thousand persons were Present, was addressed by one of the democratic nomi- nees for elector! He said that if elected he should vote for Fremont. ° The Whig State Convention of Virginia will assemble to-day, in Richmond. A Fremont and Johnston meeting was held at Worces- ter, Mass., on Saturday evening last, to forma club. A discussion ensued as to the title of the club—whether it should be Fremont and Johnston, or simply Fremont. The adherents of Johnston prevailed, by a vote of 26 to 24. ‘While Colonel Benton was speaking the other day in one of the Missouri towns, the platform gave way, but the old war horse was unhurt, and he declared that it was his prerogative to break through platforms. ‘The Louisville Journal, of the 11th inst., says-—General Houston, United States Senator from Texas, passed through this city yesterday on his way to Washington. His health is perfectly re-established. He seems ten years younger than he did when we saw him in Frank- fort last winter. He looks as if he had a dozen political campaigns in him, and twice as many mititary ones. The Richmond Whig says that Governor Wise would leave Richmond on Tuesday morning, ostensibly on an excursion to Cape Charles, but really to make the neces- sary arrangements in Accomac and the other counties composing the First Congressional district, for the elec- tion of a successor to Gen. Bayly, recently deceased. The Weekly Tribune, & strong democratic paper, pub- lished at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, has hauled down the Buchanan flag, and declared its preference for Colonel Fremont. In its issue of July 3 it announces the fact, as follows:—‘‘The name of James Buchanan no longer floats from the political masthead of this sheet. Next week we shall enlist under the banner of Colonel John C. Fre- mont, and, ‘sink or swim, live or die, survive or perish,’ we shall feel a soldier’s pride in battling maafully under the proud banner of equal rights.’? Hon. Oscar F. Moore, says the Providence Post, the present republican member of Congress from the Ross district in Ohio, has declared himself against Fremont, and will take the stump for Fillmore. Mr. Moore is a Know Nothing-whig, and was elected as such. The Slave Trade in Baltimore. About ago she was discovered at the mouth < the St. Mary’s river, in the Chesapeake Bay, where she had been scuttled was rapidly filling with’ water; she was taken in charge bones salvors and brought into port, and by order of the United States District Court was last week sold and the proceeds of the sale divided between the go- vernment and the salvors. The vessel having been abandoned, excited the suspicion that it was a slavér, and it was condemned to be sold for that reason. At the in stigation of the United States District Atorney, warrants were issued for the arrest of all parties —— io fitiag out and conducting the vessel, and accordingly the per- sons above mentioned were taken into custedy. Baker is supposed to have commanded the vessel during the expe dit ; Labradada is charged with being with her during the cruise, and Mr. Baptista, the Portugese Consul at this port, is charged with being concerned in having fitted her owtas aslaver. Baker and Labradada were committed to jail , and the other two were held to bail by the Cnited States Commissioner, Aun examination of the parties will take place before the O¢mmissioner this morning. ent manufacturers —bentden 15, secon hand pI prices vat Ht ined repaired, polished, bos pianos. ‘Music at reduced prizes. the and to manufacture # now selling freely North, South, East and West, without advertising.
