To this may be opposed, as akind of reply, the in- picme number of recruits who continually will pour ‘the rauks of Walker. There is something true aa, aad we do not deny that the Ulibusteriog chief will receive reinforcements, and those of no smal! amount, considering the circumstagces of the country, and admitting that pay be all made available. Ourse! ves, however, who are accustomed to calculate in a different way, and pot to accept, without an immense discount, this kind of popular acclamation, are inclined to consider matters under a different point of view. From vociferat.ng in a meeting to voluntarily taking up arms, ‘there is along way. Only men lostto reputation, and turbulent and ambitious minds are disposed to adopt the last alternative; but for stimulating the one or the other, it wants some powerful inducement. Therefore, we see that, even inthe first paroxyem, the bands which has tened to Nicaragua do not full the pompous advertise ments and promises. Instead of numbering by thousands they are but hundreds, and who knows what will hap. pen as soon as the first’ impetus being over other meet ‘ings and other clamors will put in oblivion Gen. But we are not prepared to say that, if the price offer ed were richer and tore seducing, there would be want- toy ia a larger number to let themselves out to be juced. MONEY MARKET. Tuvespar, July 10-6 P. M ‘The stock market was @ little more buoyant at the opening this morning. There has not been much activity for some days past, which we atiribute to the fact that @tecks are accumulating in tho hands of a few at high prices, aad cannot be distributed without submitting to lower rates. The market does not move up so rapidly as anticipated. Purchases mado a week or two since were above prices now ruling, and boiders cannot realize with out loss. This they do not intend to do just now, and we may, therefore, look for a dull and perhaps a steady market. At the frst board to-day [llinois Central bonds advanced 1 per cent; Cumberland Coal, 4; New York Comirai Railroad, 34; Erie, %{; Michigan Southern, 5; Chicago and Rock laland, %. Cleveland and Pittsbarg Railroad fell of & percent. The principal feature of the market is the steady rive in Llinois Central bonds. The stock sold to-day at 104% per cent; but the movement is fm the bonds, which are in demand both for foreign and domestic investment. At the rate of absorption which has been going on for some Ume im the bonds and @ock of is company upon foreign orders, the entire debt and capital will socom be held in Europe. From miscellancous soures The tolls collected on all the canals of the State of New York, for the month of June, 1656, amounted to $580,765 71; for June, 1855, they were $375,945 75. The value of exports from the port of Boston during the week ending July 3, including specie, was as follows: —American, $1,198,295 35; foreign, $16,228 01 —total, $1,214,525 45. The revenue of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, for June, was:— Main Stem. Wash'n Branch. The estimate made of property of the Canton Company, of Baltimore, in the annual report of 1854, fixed the assessed value of each share at seventy-two dollars aud twenty-five cents. In this estimate the property which bas been recently leased to the Treverton Coal and Railroad Company, with the privilege of purchase within three years, at the price of one hundred and six- teen thousand six bundred and sixty-six dollars, was assessed at one hundred and twenty-six thousand dollars. The assessed valuation, therefore, exceeded what has been actually realized in the terms of the lease only a fraction over one thirteenth part ot the sum thus realized; and if this transaction be taken as @ basis whereby to test the actual present value of the shares of the Canton Company, we have the estimated value, $75 25, less one thirteenth part of the same, or $75 25, less $5 55, equal to $67 70, as the present value of each share of Canton, which is now neglected in Wall street at $22 per share. And yet it is a well known fact that the company is still the owner of all the property held in 1854, that it is entirely free from debt of all kinds, and that it has available assets in band to the amount of $150,000. To form some estimate of the intrinsic value of this property, it must be borne ia mind that it embraces about three thousand acres of land, including more than three- fourths of the First ward of the city of Baltimore, and more than one-half of the whole water line of the harbor; that it has new and substantial wharves of solid timber for more than half a mile im aggregate extent, and an average depth of water of from 20 to 25 feet through. out the entire line of the company’s property on the har bor, that this vast property, improved by an expendi- ture of some $400,000 by the company, and still more by individuals, on lots idased and purchased from the com- pany, is just upon the verge of realizing the advantages of its being the terminus of the great Northern Central Railroad, which not only connects with the great Penn- sylvania Railroad at Harrisburg, but forms the shortest and cheapest outlet to market from all the mines in the Mahoney, the Lyken'’s Valley and the Shamokin coal fields on the tributaries of the Susquehanna river. What the effect of this outlet, of such a vast coal trade alone, will be, is answered by the growth and rapidly enhanced value of real estate at Richmond, on the Dela ware, where the present value of lots remote from the water (and previous to the road's terminating there, but farming land), ranges from $30 tw $80 per front foot. But only think of the prospective valve of 5,000 acres of land, including more than three fourths of the First ward of the city, and over one-half of the water line of the whole harbor, and that harbor be ing that of the city of Raltimore—a city which ranks among the first in commercial importance in the United States, and whove population has increased as follows since 1800, when it was $4,620:—In 1840 it was 102,513, im 1850 it was 169,064, and in 1863 about 196,000, and at this time {t may be safely pot down at 220,000 persons! Now, in 1834, when the population of the city was about $7,000, and when the land owned by the Canton Company was entirely unimproved, before it had any rai! road connections with the West, and with only $13 50 paid op, on what is now 1-50,000th part, or one share of Canton stock, Wall street bought and sold Canton stock at $280 per share, or $70 per share as at present divided. (What was originally divided into 12,500 shares, is ow divided into 60,000.) Hore is an anomalous state of things, and it illustrates how little the current quotations of prices in Wall street have to do with the intrinsic value of the stock, We can account in some measure for this singular state of facts. For many years past the affairs of thi« company have been controlled by w brokers in Wall street, and their friends and correspondents in other cities, who have so managed the company’s pro- perty a* t monopolize all the revenue; and while pretending t act for the exclusive bene. fit of the permanent stockholders, they were par. ng all the time the very policy which gave po income to any one but thomsclves. By alternately ras ag and disappointing the expectations of the stock boiders they Lougbt and sold their stock with a constaat joes to the stockholder, but with an equally uniform profit to themseives. Por this and other good and sufficient causes, these gentiemen have been turned out of the board of direc. tore, and now, although they affixed their signatores to the evtimates in the annual reports of 1860 and 1854, (in whorh each of the present shares was valued at $40—672 then) these same gentlemen are busy in discrediting the stock in Wall street, even atthe present current rates of $23 per share. But the selifishnes* and want of truth im their whole course are too transparent to deceive any one who will examine into the true state of things. The policy of the present board of directors § ix one which will not only give regular and handsome dir) dends to the stockholders during the present and fature years, but, by encouraging small proprietors in their laudable efforts to hold their property in fee, and by sell ing alternate lots of selected parcels of land each year, the ultimate and aggregate yield of this real estate mast be immense. Those who question this policy should look al the result of the alternate section «ystem on the Illinois Central Railroad, and wherever elze it has been adopted while thowe who regret the abasdonment of the ‘dog and manger” policy of the late Board may see ite effect not only i Baltimore, where the small proprietors have been driven from Canton, but in Washington City, and in many others, where the same policy has not only changed the direction given to ths growth of the city but has sctually impoverished many who have adopted it, because their increased taxes more than ewallowed up all the revenue from uaproductive and an. improved lots. It may be safely said that the actual va jue of the Canton property now is at least five fold what it was in 1894; and it is thought by many who are good jadges of city property, that, if judiciously divided and sold during the month of October next, the whole property of the company could be sold so as to re alize $00 om each share, And yet it goer a bogging a $23 per sbare! The Boston Advatiser of the %h, says = ‘The stock market is unsettied, with greater disposition to buy than sell in most stocks and bonds. foston and Maine declined 3, selling at 78, and the same price asked, Providence was a litle better, all the lote offered at 64 being taken up, & price that could not have been obtained a few days since. There isa little more inquiry for bank shares, and sales are large. Some of the fancies of “olden times” are coming into favor again. Of these, Vermont and Massachnsetts has fdynaced from 6 to 8 within @ short time, and there is little stock in the market.
